CLEANLINESS IS NEXT TO GODLINESS ❣️❣️❣️

This is one of the habits that was hammered to us by our parents and seconded by our teachers in school. Cleanliness is one of the many traits that we have learned at home. All our lives we have been taught of the importance of cleanliness. That it reflects our personality and our way of living. A clean surrounding means a well-disciplined and well-organized person is around to maintain it.

But what happened to this government-owned hospital? They are supposed to model their institution way better than most. This hospital has expanded its bed capacity to accommodate more patients and has even undergone a series of revamps in its administration to improve its operation. It has since received a huge upgrade in its equipment and technology to be at par with private hospitals.

But the issue here is not about the expansion, or the equipment, or the technology. It is about the manpower and their ability to preserve orderliness around the confines of the hospital. A quick tour on this supposedly prestigious institution has revealed lapses in their maintenance and sanitation duties.

Cleanliness should be of utmost importance. Viruses, bacteria and all other diseases are prone to thrive around dirty surroundings and a dirty hospital is not at all pleasing to the public’s eye. Shoutout to the administration of this hospital in the District of Mandurriao, Iloilo City. Are we to assume that the people who run this hospital are also disorganized and untidy persons? You be the judge.

TREE PLANTING ACTIVITY
"ALAGA-AN ang KALIKASAN"
Floodway, Uhong-Uhong, Buhang, Jaro, Iloilo City
August 10, 2024

Iloilo City had been on the peak of its economic boom. Sadly, along with the rise in economy came the garbage, electricity and water problem. But the issue is not about pollution, or water or electricity. It is the continued denudation of our mountains and plains that has continued to hound us. This wanton act of destruction has severely affected our environment causing abnormal weather, and catastrophes like typhoons and floods.

Sharelove Charities, Inc., for the love of country and the environment, spearheaded a treeplanting activity at the Floodway in Uhong-Uhong, Buhang, Jaro, in August 10, 2024, to help the City Government in its campaign to save the environment. Mayor Gerry Trenas delegated Mr. Armando Dayrit, Executive Assistant for Environment and head of the Urban Tree Panting Nursery and his staff to assist Sharelove Charities and its partners, the Rotary and Rotaract Clubs of Lapaz, the Iloilo Host Lions Club, and the Kabataang Barangay, during the activity.

The whole delegation successfully planted various tree and plant species to the delight of Mr. Dayrit. Sharelove Charities seriously advocated the recovery of the environment and moves for future treeplanting and other related environmental projects in the near future.

Thanks mainly to Ms. Arlene Martin, owner of Sharelove Charities, Inc. and its partners and collaborators for taking the initiative to come up with this kind of project. Congratulations for a successful treeplanting acitivity.

THE DEATH OF THE PERSONAL COMPUTER
By: Joseph Aldwin Guanzon

IBM had been a big name in the mainframe dominated field of computers and has since become a household name when they launched their IBM Personal Computer in 1981. There was little or no competition since IBM patented its microprocessor. IBM Compatible computers, typically clones, were less powerful and more often, have glitches. Compaq, one of the big computer manufacturers and among the first to produce IMB PC compatible computers was able to legally reverse engineer the design architecture of the IBM PC.

But what accelerated the use of personal computers was the introduction of Lotus 1-2-3, an early spreadsheet program. It was the killer application that changed everything for the personal computer. Computers were mainly used for business and the uses of this spreadsheet software gave businesses the ability to track their expenses and no longer have to wait months for their accountants to tell them how their business was doing. Lotus 1-2-3 was able to generate income and balance sheets instantaneously. The use of graphs and the ability to come up with what-if scenario was a major game-changer for businesses.

Lotus 1-2-3 became the stress test application for the power and reliance on the hardware of other IBM PC compatibles. PC clones that appeared in the 1980s are considered 100% compatible if they were able to run Lotus 1-2-3 along with Microsoft’s Flight Simulator software. Everyone was basking in the use and glory of the personal computer.

As more and more manufacturers jumped into the bandwagon, development of this new technology grew so fast that hardware and software would be cutting edge now, and then obsolete after 18-24 months. There was rapid computer sales year after year. Then the technical change began to slow down. The moment has arrived when people no longer saw the technical advantage of buying new hardware and software. There was no longer a recognizable benefit when dealing with change.

The emergence of mobile devices was also another game-changer. When Apple sought to revolutionize the PC industry, it developed computers to directly compete with IBM and its clones. Apple came up with consumer products that mostly centered in hardware independence. One of its products, the Macbook Air, became the basis for the development of future laptop devices from different manufacturers. Macbook Air was ergonomically perfect in size and has powerful hardware and software features. But the most notable change came when Apple released the Ipad, and mobile devices was never the same.
People have sought hardware independence for a long time, and was rewarded with the release of the iPhone. This was complemented by free internet access in coffee shops and malls combined with mobile data. Apple advocated CLOUD COMPUTING. With the advent of the smart phone, data and email moved from desktop and laptop to being hosted in the Cloud running on massive servers controlled by mega corporations such as Facebook and Google.

The popularity of mobile computing devices took a big chunk of the market share amid the development of more mobile devices particularly the tablets and smart phones. Personal computer sales stagnated and declined. The widespread use of Social Media and instant messaging and working collaboratively across the cloud further accelerated the decline. Computer manufacturers have to change to remain competitive.

The death of the Personal Computer was just around the corner. There was even a prediction of the exact date and time of its demise. Tech experts were convinced that that personal computers would be extinct by 2020. Then the Pandemic happened. Covid 19 forced millions of people worldwide to return to their living rooms and convert it into their new offices. But that’s another story.

THE PERSONAL COMPUTER
By: Joseph Aldwin Guanzon

Personal Computers began in the 1970s during the development of the microprocessor. Back then mainframe computers were widely used. Mainframe operation involved a time-sharing system or end-users requests that are filtered through an operating staff, unlike a PC that has interactive individual use. Also called microcomputers, these devices became low enough in cost and eventually became affordable consumer goods. They were sold in high demand to hobbyists and technicians often in electronic kit form and in limited numbers.

A relatively young corporation called Intel introduced the Intel 4004 in 1974 and microprocessor costs declined rapidly. The following year, an electronic kit based in Intel 8080 was sold to consumers. This processor was somewhat more powerful and easier to use. Altair, a computer company, went head to head with Intel with their Altair 8800 which also sold remarkably well although it had limited memory capacity and no software was available. The Altair system was also less costly than an Intel development system of the time and was purchased by companies interested in microprocessor control of their own products. Soon, upgrades came in the form of expansion memory boards and peripherals which also evolved into plug compatible upgrades.

The very first microcomputer product designed to run a higher-level language was made by Microsoft. It was a 4 kilobyte paper tape BASIC interpreter that allowed users to develop programs. This was Bill Gates’ first legacy to the world.

Microcomputers evolved at a steady rate leading to the development of the single chip CPU. From 1967 up to the early 70s, advancement in the development of Metal Oxide Semiconductors produced integrated circuits which had higher switching speeds and lower power consumption. The first commercially available microprocessor, the Intel 4004, was a concept that came from a woman who graduated from Japan’s Nara Women’s University. Unfortunately, the name was never documented. That woman suggested several separate chips to implement a CPU for different calculator products. At that time, Japanese company Busicom came up with an idea to build a calculator from a standardized general purpose reprogrammable computer to implement different models for use in different markets. Intel bought this concept but realized the design would be too expensive. An Intel employee simplified this concept by combining the multiple CPU chips into a single chip, reducing complexity and production cost because there are fixed costs associated with producing individual CPUs. Further improvements and latest production techniques improved device density and squeezed all components into a single chip. Thus, began the production of Intel 4004.

Coincidently, another American Company approached Intel with a request to reduce the CPU chip count for one of their computer terminal range resulting in a similar single-chip CPU design. Unfortunately, the Company declined the device leaving Intel with the intellectual property that would later become the Intel 8008. This microchip would eventually become the foundation of Intel’s Personal Computer CPU range. The 8008 was followed by the Intel 8080 in 1974, the Intel 8086 in 1978 and the cost-reduced 8088 in 1979, which was ultimately used by the original IBM PC, the unit that became the basis for the IBM PC de facto standard.

So began the microcomputer revolution with the perfection of the single-chip CPU. In only a few years, a number of other manufacturers started to produce their own single-chip CPUs to compete with Intel. Companies like Motorola, Fairchild, Thompson, National Semiconductor and Zilog began rolling out their own single chip CPUs. Most of them would be widely used in early personal computers and other applications.

SATOCA Agrarian Reform Cooperative wins Best Shared Service Facilities Project Award in Western Visayas

In a significant boost to local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), the SATOCA Agrarian Reform Cooperative from the Province of Negros Occidental has clinched the title of Best Shared Service Facilities (SSF) Project in Western Visayas for 2024. The announcement was made during the annual SSF Mid-year Assessment and Planning held on July 31, 2024, at the Goldberry Hotel in Iloilo City.

Born out of the Department of Trade and Industry's Bottom-Up Budgeting (DTI-BUB) Program in 2015-2016, SATOCA has grown from a collection of small agricultural groups in Sagay City to a thriving cooperative. Initially comprising 22 members from Sagay, Toboso, and Calatrava municipalities, it now boasts 34 members, including associates.

The cooperative's success story is intrinsically linked to the transformative impact of the SSF program, a flagship initiative of the Department of Trade and Industry. This program aims to enhance MSME productivity and competitiveness by providing access to advanced technology and equipment through a unique public-private partnership model.

DTI VI Regional Director Rachel Nufable said that this approach enables small businesses to access machinery, tools, and systems that enhance the productivity and competitiveness of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). By providing better equipment and facilities, the program helps MSMEs produce higher quality products, increase efficiency, and contribute significantly to the growth of the local economy.

The cooperative's success in the face of strong competition from other regional nominees - including projects focused on sewing facilities in Aklan, animal and livestock feed production in Antique, calamansi processing in Capiz, and a loomweaving center in Baraclayan, Iloilo - underscores the effectiveness of the SSF program in empowering local MSMEs.

SATOCA's journey took a significant turn in late 2018 when it acquired its FDA License to Operate for its processing facility in Old Sagay. Equipped with new tools and machinery provided by the SSF, SATOCA dramatically enhanced its production capabilities and product quality. This support enabled them to expand their market reach, distributing their "Deliciously Healthy" branded products to Pasalubong Centers, One Town, One Product (OTOP) Hubs, and supermarkets across the province.
The SSF's assistance facilitated a noteworthy partnership between SATOCA, the Department of Education - Division of Escalante, and Esheen Consumers Cooperative.

This collaboration resulted in the successful provision of Nutri-packs, including Rice-Mung Meal, Nutri-bun, and cereals, valued at ₱3,536,531.50.

SATOCA's achievements extend beyond mere business success. The cooperative has become a beacon of hope for agrarian reform beneficiaries, demonstrating how government support, coupled with community determination, can transform lives. By increasing production capacities, improving product quality, and expanding market reach, SATOCA has not only increased sales but also generated jobs within the community.

SATOCA's journey from a small agricultural cooperative to an award-winning enterprise shows the potential of public-private collaboration in Western Visayas. Their success, culminating in this prestigious award, demonstrates how targeted government initiatives like the SSF program can empower local businesses and drive economic growth.
This award not only recognizes SATOCA's excellence in implementing the SSF project but also highlights the success of the government's efforts to support and empower local businesses.
The cooperative's achievement serves as an inspiration for other MSMEs in the region and demonstrates the potential for growth and innovation when public and private sectors collaborate effectively.
As Western Visayas continues to develop its local industries, the success of projects like SATOCA's SSF initiative paves the way for increased economic opportunities and improved livelihoods for communities across the region.
