𝗖𝗔𝗦 𝗥𝗢𝗔𝗥𝗘𝗗 𝗜𝗡 𝗦𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗦

Concluding the SR PAHAMPANG 2024, College of Arts and Sciences proved that they can compete and be on the top as they roared for various medals in the field of sports.

In a three-day game competition, a fierce and breathtaking play was showcased by the various colleges and CAS showed that they are the true wolves.

In the world of esports, College of Arts and Sciences ruled the online sports taking the victory in Wildrift and Mobile Legends and first runner up in Call of Duty.

In terms of combative skills, CAS was able to take home the first runner up title for women’s category and 2nd runner up for men’s category.

The wolves were also skillful in ball games, Volleyball Men was able to secure the victory emerging as champion, while the women’s category finished as 3rd runner up. Football was also able to kick their way to the championship title while women’s category clinched 1st runner up title. Lastly in basketball, both men and women categories landed as third runner up.

The days of preparation despite the heat and the blood, sweat, and tears that had poured all throughout the tournament was all worth it because of the outcome.

𝗜𝗦𝗔𝗧 𝗨 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗠𝗿. 𝗣𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰

Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT U) concluded its annual Mr. and Ms. Pahampang event on Thursday, May 16, 2024, where Felix Estaniel Oros was crowned the new Mr. Pahampang 2024.

In a resounding victory, Felix Estaniel Oros from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) was crowned the new Mr. Pahampang 2024. With an outstanding performance, Oros's success showcases a remarkable win for the CAS.

Felix Estaniel Oros's victory extended beyond the stage performance, as he also won the Best in Interview and Best in Sports Attire awards, firmly establishing his place as a deserving winner.

In addition, Ms. CAS Marcine Magan Balinas placed 1st Runner-Up in Mr. and Ms. Pahampang 2024. With grace and determination, Balinas impressed the audience and judges, as she also won the Best in Production award.

The success of Felix Estaniel Oros and Marcine Magan Balinas in representing CAS in Mr. and Ms. Pahampang 2024 is a testament to their dedication, talent, and commitment to excellence.

Their remarkable performances not only showcased their individual abilities but also reflected the collective strength of students within the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). Their accomplishments resonate as a source of pride for the entire CAS community.

✍️𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐉𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐤𝐚 𝐀𝐜𝐮𝐞𝐫𝐝𝐨

An infant heedlessly slumbers to a good night’s sleep while cradled by a fatigued yet nourishing arms. With a wobbly stride, a toddler inches toward an open arm that would readily cushion a headlong fall. Spewing madness and opening perilous doors, an unwary teenager comes running back to that same tending arms, bewailing over irreversible consequences of youth. An adult with utter autonomy still drowns in the overwhelming realities of adulthood, and yet again longs for that feeble arms to now be a shoulder to lean on.

A mother’s love to her child extends beyond what can be humanly uttered. It is ineffable. It is not understood through verbose rambles, rather only by trailing the same route can one be able to fathom its greatness.

The celebration of World Mother’s Day is a marvellous way to reinvigorate the appreciation for mothers. However, it would’ve been ideal to practice this admiration and reverence for maternal love on a daily basis. Due to its lasting presence our lives, often than not, we perceive our mother’s tending as conventional causing us to sleep on its gravity. As the light that beacons our pathways, let us all be engrossed by our mothers’ profound sacrifices and perpetual love that defeats all the unease.

A mother’s love knows no bounds thus, neither should we tether our reciprocation of gratitude to anything finite. They deserve the world and the best it can ever offer.

1st of May every year is celebrated globally as 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐚𝐲; a day to commemorate workers across varying sectors.

It was in 1889 that an international federation of socialist groups proposed May 1 as a day to support workers in memory of the Haymarket Affair in Chicago(1886): a riot demanding for regulation of working hours and better working conditions.

May 1 is then gradually recognized until it became the holiday it is known today, however there are other countries like USA and Canada which celebrate Labor Day during the first Monday of September.

The IRIS Publication would like to express its gratitude to all workers for keeping things going for everyone. Taking on the responsibilities of being the limbs of society is not an easy task but it is a necessary one.

Our gratitude to all the hardworking laborers, most specially to the workers in the literal field.

Second day was the big day, competitions rippled in the morning followed by series of talks from outstanding personalities.

DJ Jhai Ho sparked the talk about entertainment journalism, keeping up with the latest, brimming with facts and credibility. Followed by Samira Gutoc, fueled the discussion about journalism in politics focused more on the rights of Mindanao regions, women rights, and human rights.

Indeed a very productive day for journous.

Convened for a transformative campus media freedom, standing with truth, and providing trustworthy journalism.

First day at the Manila Grand Opera Hotel was a blast-- filled with smart plenary speakers and imperative discussions.

Dr. Severino Sarmenta Jr. a veteran sports writer, filled the hall with a humurous talk about sports writing. Dr. Ronald Aldamat a nobel peace prize awardee for non-violent peace, delivered a speech harmonizing people of diversities. And the "King of Talk" Dr. Boy Abunda focused the session in showbiz journalism discussing issues among popular figures and how to deal public backlashes.

Overall, the plenary sessions in the first day of the convention was superb, from providing relevant topics to catering interesting questions.

𝑰𝑺𝑨𝑻 𝑼 𝑻𝒂𝒆𝒌𝒘𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒐 𝑻𝒆𝒂𝒎, 𝑶𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑺𝒆𝒏𝒊𝒐𝒓'𝒔 𝑫𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏

Last, April 20 and 21, Saturday and Sunday the Taekwondo Team of Iloilo Science and Technology University showcased amazing skills and talents despite limited time of training and bagged the Overall Champion for Senior's Category for the 2024 Visayas Inter School Taekwondo Championship that was held at Robinson's Place Pavia.

As we've asked the players what are their struggles to achieved their hard-earned trophy they have almost the same answer, "The difficulty of balancing academics and their sports."

In the past weeks, classes are being cancelled due to extreme heat that became an hindrance for them to practice but despite that their love for the sport and the support of the people around them added to their motivation to strive big and earn big.

They accumulated a total of 11 golds, 2 silvers, and 2 bronze for both Kyurogi and Poomsae, Men's and Women's Category.

Alimited set of time they set out to prevail the enkindling passion in their hearts to stand before their fellow tradeans, not merely to be served but to serve.

Both the hunger and the thirst of the spirits, to raise not merely an awareness of concerns among the students of the different colleges in ISAT U main campus but to raise a worthwhile solution to make resolutions.

Various innovative insights and uniquely intuitive proposals for the advancement of the facilities in the university were given emphasis and had drawn the students' attention.

Several candidates uncovered their platforms as they sought the essence of utilizing their experiences and initiatives to create significant improvements among their constituents.

Inclusivity, environmental cleanliness and sustainability, fostering innovative skills as well as determining sports potentials include the presented platforms of the candidates.

Behind the earnest dedication each of the candidate has, as unfolded in their empowered presentation during the Miting de Avance, were the valuable path they trailed on as they persevere to achieve the vital effects of their journey in leadership.

Such unwavering enthusiasm to be in the service for another span of time only enables the aspirant candidates to continue to build a firmer foundation of combined knowledge and experience to meet the superb ideal outcome that they propose.

ISATU delegates will be conquering RASUC competitions from March 23-26 under the same theme with the national competition“Bidlisiw: Paghilom, Pagbangon, at Pagsulong,”highlighting healing, resilience, and hope still in connection to the pandemics' rage and survival

UP Visayas - Miagao Campus with its lush greenery and vibrant campus life: nestled along the shores of the Visayan Sea, offering a unique blend of academic excellence and natural beauty as well as creating an inspiring environment for learning and growth, welcomed the faculty and students of ISATU in their launch for interdisciplinary film workshop and competition on Film as Pedagogy.

The seminar-workshop started with a welcoming remarks from Prof. Jude Vincent Parcon - Chairperson, Division of Humanities.

Followed by Dr. Clement G. Camposano - Chancellor, UP Visayas leaving a remarkable quote, "as kindred spirits, we break new grounds in the sciences, and in different fields [by having film as pedagogy]."

He also noted that, "we need film to think differently about education looking at it in a different perspective, not just for entertainment but for education."

The seminar-workshop as it has been preceded with silence, turned into a noisy yet healthy discussion of signs and symbols and understanding the semiotics of films in all its forms, all by the multi-awarded Prof. Nicolas Deocampo.

He underscored a discussion centered on "𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘦𝘥𝘢𝘨𝘰𝘨𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘊𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘮𝘢: 𝘓𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘔𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘗𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘴" bringing him to his main notion that "films are potent ways to talk about. power, history, gender, economy, colonization etc."

During the open-forum he answered the question on what is his take on teachers who do not address film as pedagogy for learning -- "teachers who not address the importance of film as pedagogy will be left behind, they are left in time"

Furthermore, he ended his discussion with a powerful persuation "we need to rationalize our audio-visual industry." and it is where the attendees from different SUC's smashed from their palm to palm signaling the end of a brilliant lecture.

Now, the ISATU faculty with all the intangible gains from the seminar-workshop is heading for a promotion of film as pedagogy, providing an avenue for students to understand the basic to average level semiotics necessary to the development of their holistic well-being.

Moreover, the ISATU attendees are as well preparing for the film-making as part of the competition, battling other brilliant SUC's in the Panay Region.

𝐈𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐖𝐢𝐜𝐤

After taking a leap of faith, Rosie caught herself in mid-air realizing she isn’t tethered to any safety harness. There was no way but down and she knew she would either land unscathed or the unfortunate opposite.

“The best way to predict the future is to create it”— a remarkable saying to which Abraham Lincoln was accredited to. This was the same saying embodied by Rosie Jill Cubita, a Bachelor of Arts in English Language student, when she plunged into a vast unknown water— the Project Mini Me.

Project Mini Me (Mainstreaming and Institutionalizing for the New Generation the Investments in Monitoring and Evaluation) is a project spearheaded by NEDA ( National Economic and Development Authority) with goals of incorporating accountability, transparency, and civic engagement among the youth.

Rosie who was then the under secretary of the Department of External Affairs of the Student Republic was recommended by the organization President to join the said project last year in the month of July. Having little to no knowledge about Project Mini Me nor where she would possibly wind up in tracking this unfamiliar trail, Rosie went along anyway.

Rosie found herself surrounded by 19 high-achieving students from various esteemed campuses all over Region 6. She felt estranged and ultimately perturbed with the thought of having to represent the Iloilo Science and Technology University with her aota of experience and knowledge in such professional realm.

However, as she gradually soak in the depths of the project, she found herself mesmerized with the gravity of power a sufficiently informed student leader possess. After being filled in with bountiful knowledge on efficient monitoring and evaluation of government projects, she garnered confidence to put herself out there.

Fueled by her training in her course, she exhibited her forte in communication by conducting compelling and unbiased interviews.

Rosie imparted an experience that fanned her fire in the field. She told a story about her persistent pursuit in gathering a local’s sentiment about an unfair implementation of a government order. She mentioned that at the beginning, the man was hesitant to spill his concern as he had previously experienced a deaf ear and a cold shoulder after escalating his sentiment to a government officer. Nonetheless, Rosie wade through the odds and is able to amplify the tiny voice of a local in her presentation before those who are seated in the position of power.

Finally, last February 29 of this year, Rosie attended her completion rites in Project Mini Me. For her, this experience bestowed upon her by the project, altered the trajectory of her mind in her outlook of the community.

“I learned that if you are fighting for the truth, you’re actually not fighting people, all you have to do is to find common ground that will bridge the gap” Rosie expressed.

Additionally, for her, the best way to pay back is to pay forward.

𝗘𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗵: 𝗖𝗔𝗦 𝗗𝗲𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺'𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝘀

Standing within a podium where a one-on-one battle transpired, showcasing a medley of wits and voice, where words transformed into influential weapons and eloquence is its robust armor, one team emerged victorious, etching their way into the pinnacle of success. The CAS Debate Team clinched the championship with their unwavering portrayal of their intellectual prowess, collaboration, and utmost dedication.

Last March 4, 2024, the elimination round of 𝗣𝗔𝗚𝗕𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗜𝗦-𝗕𝗔𝗜𝗦 𝟮.𝟬: 𝗠𝗔𝗕𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗔𝗡 𝗠𝗢 𝗕𝗔𝗟𝗔 𝗔𝗞𝗢?, with the theme "Think and Talk: Weaving Perspectives Bridging Minds" paved its way onto becoming the most awaited event of the day. Held at the Student Services Multipurpose Hall, the CAS Debate Team, composed of Jetro Celestial, Adrian Kyle C. Zulueta, and Jun Aguilar as speakers, accompanied by researchers such as Aljun Erdao, John Lloyd Legpitan, John Christian Garcia, Kyla Casimero, and Mary Kate Alingasa has proven their fiery wits and passion in the battlefield of words.

With remarkable performance, they demonstrated the ideals of a debate as an art where they sculpted words into powerful means of intellect. Their strategic brilliance and exhibition of mastery regarding the intricacies of such a concept crowned them victors, crafting a persuading narrative that captivates everyone within the immense arena.

The CAS Debate Team, in conjunction with their counterparts, the CEA Debating Team, delivered their viewpoints on the proposal of enacting House Bill 7893, commonly referred to as the K+10+2 curriculum revision, into law. CAS Debating Team member Jetro Celestial was acknowledged as the best speaker with his articulating mastery. Alongside is Adrian Kyle C. Zulueta as the best debater with his infused vigor into his arguments, making every diction a compelling statement to reason.

Such achievements would not be impeccable without the tenacious support and guidance of their trustworthy coaches, Mr. Ronnel Domines and Ms. April Dawnn Bahague.

In the aftermath of this intellectual battle, their aim to conquer the world of intellectual capabilities continues to progress as they step into a new domain with fresh nemesis, bringing in their passionate echoes of triumph.

Faculty of the College of Arts Sciences casts their vote for their favorable candidate for CAS Dean at the Student's Center of ISAT-U

The candidates presented their strategic plans for a two-year term as CAS Dean. The candidates were the incumbent Dean Dr. Tracy Tacuban and Dr. Jasper Pastrano.

Along with the faculty, students have also been invited to engage in the presentation as well as throw questions that is relevant to the plans of the candidates, concerns in the welfare of the students and as well as problems faced by the faculty in the college.

CAS Debaters: Raging Fire Consumes the Championship Many were beguiled by the faux-meekness radiated by the traditional dresses of the CAS debaters. The debaters appeared modest yet spurring inside them is an avid fire with intent of holocaust, waiting to be freed. Yesterday morning, the most awaited debate championship spearheaded by the Student Republic and facilitated by the Social Science Club was finally concluded. The CEA (College of Engineering and Architecture) and CAS (College of Arts and Sciences) were the two teams left standing after the elimination round. Consequently, they are the ones set to face each other and battle for the championship title. Doused with brilliance, mastery, and astute techniques, the College of Arts and Sciences debaters combusted and consumed the championship title. The victors of CAS, Jetro Celestial, Kyle Zulueta, Aljun Erdao, Nikka Medianista, Mary Kate Alingasa, and John Lloyd Legpitan hoisted the name of the College when they set the stage ablaze with their fiery wit. The team left a trace of nothing but ashes as Kyle Zulueta, one of their speakers, hit two birds with one stone when he bagged both of the most coveted titles, the Best Speaker title and the Best Debater title. The team unceasingly summoned embers during the debate and it paid off. The CAS was accorded as the Best Debating Team. For the team, it was a privilege to represent the banner of College of Arts and Sciences. With pride and utmost enthusiasm, they are more than willing to undergo the same tension and weighted pressure if it meant rendering honor to the beloved College.
