Every July, the Philippines celebrates Nutrition Month to encourage healthy habits and spread awareness about the importance of good nutrition for our body and mental health, this celebration aims to educate and motivate students to build healthy habits that will benefit them throughout their lives.
Did you know that some Filipinos joke that July is Nutrition Month because "gulay"(vegetables) sounds like 'July'? It's an interesting coincidence but the real reason is that Nutrition Month was officially declared in July through Presidential Decree No. 491, signed in 1974, to promote awareness about healthy nutrition and fight malnutrition across the country.
Celebrating Nutrition Month is an amazing opportunity to raise awareness about healthy eating habits, but its impact should last longer than just a month of events and posters. True nutrition awareness has the power to support people in maintaining their health throughout the year. A healthy diet rich in vegetables and fruits significantly lowers the risk of chronic diseases. Nutrition Month is a great way to catch attention, but without continued support, motivation fades away. Encouraging gradual and ongoing changes is key for adapting nutritious habits from a temporary phase into a permanent part of life. Long-term engagement allows the individual to adapt healthy habits, making them realistic and enjoyable.
According to health experts, people who maintain healthy diets rich in whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and lean proteins have a 20% lower risk of death and are less likely to die from chronic diseases. People who maintain nutrition habits tend to have better quality of life, appearance, and vitality.
Proper nutrition starts at home. The home environment influences food choices based on availability and family preferences, fruits vegetables and whole grains are accessible and commonly consumed together as a family, it provides an amazing foundation for lifelong good nutrition.
Parents and guardians not only teach what to eat, but also how to appreciate a balanced meal. A supportive home environment can promote not only physical health but also mental wellness and emotional connection to eating. Encouraging families to prioritize balanced meals and eating together supports sustainable wellness practice.
In conclusion, Nutrition Month reminds us that having healthy eating habits is not a choice— it's a responsibility. We need to take care of our bodies with nutritious food and maintain habits like drinking water, getting enough sleep, and staying active. These simple steps can make a huge difference in our learning, energy, and mental well-being. By choosing healthy foods and encouraging others to do the same, we are not just celebrating Nutrition month—we're working toward a healthier life for us and our community.
