Scholars wield their pens and papers as they battle for positions in the campus' official school publications.

The first day of screening for Sci-Wings and Bagwis-Agham begins with participants showing off their skills in their chosen events: news writing, feature writing, editorial writing, sports writing, sci-tech writing, photojournalism, editorial cartooning, and layout design. The competition is cut close as only the most proficient and creative journalists can rise to the top, securing a spot in the next round of interviews.

Buwan ng Wika celebration returns

After five years, the Philippine Science High School - Southern Mindanao Campus (PSHS-SMC) brings back the Buwan ng Wika festivity to remind scholars of the importance of embracing the Filipino language and culture.

“Muling binabalikan natin ang ating mga ugat, ang ating mga tradisyon, at ang ating wika na siyang pangunahing salamin ng ating pagkakakilanlan,” said Dr. Jonald P. Fenecios, the PSHS-SMC campus director, during his opening remarks.

Throughout the month-long celebration, all grade levels competed in events such as the Laro ng Lahi, Pista sa Nayon, Sayawit, and Lakan and Lakambini pageant.

The students and faculty also showcased their traditional Filipino outfits during the culmination day.

“Ang Buwan ng Wika ay nagsisilbing tulay upang kilatisin natin yung mga nakaraan, wika, at tradisyon para maibalik natin ang mga ito sa modernong panahon,” Mr. Johnel Lumacao, the Filipino unit head, emphasized to the scholars.

On the fourth and final day of the School-Based Press Conference (SBPC), scholars compete to secure a spot in Scriptwriting and Radio Broadcasting. Exhibiting their vocal prowess, news writing, and technical excellence, aspirants come together as groups and face other challengers to claim the position that will bring glory to the school’s name in the upcoming Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC).

The SBPC finally comes to a close, which marks the start of a new beginning as PSHS-SMC vehemently prepares to return to the spotlight.

𝐈𝐍 𝐏𝐇𝐎𝐓𝐎𝐒 | Camaraderie and strategic planning fill the Pisay-Davao Quadrangle as scholars take part in the time-honored traditions of Larong Pinoy: Patintero and Luksong Lubid, as well as the intellectual challenge of Tagisan ng Talino.

These events are hosted by the PSHS-SMC Filipino Unit as part of its Buwan ng Wika celebration after a five-year hiatus, spotlighting tradition and sportsmanship among the six batches.

𝐈𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐮𝐢𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡.

For the past eleven months, Sci Wings has strived to fulfill its oath — to serve and serve accordingly. That pursuit has been no easy task, admittedly. Over the past few years, Sci Wings has had its fair share of challenges, drawbacks, mistakes, and mishaps. Despite that, we have taken pride in our resilience and formidability, never ceasing the uphill battle and never once second-doubting to relinquish our cause. Through all adversity, Sci Wings has not only stood firm, but it has also only grown stronger, and we owe that success to everyone who has left their footprint in this organization. This could not have been possible without the collaborative effort of everyone.

But as does the adage 'nothing lasts forever, even the good things must come to an end,' there was no denying that even the time here at Sci Wings was always finite — destined to run its course at some point. Such is the fate of every matter to exist in this world. Only that we never truly know when that time might strike us.

For us here at Sci Wings, while we are fortunate that such time will have yet to arrive, we have come to the acknowledgment that this previous chapter has come to its last, and to allow its due conclusion to play out like how it should is only right.

Change. It is bound to happen. No matter how much we want it, nothing remains the same. But no one has ever said change would be easy. In that sense, change may present itself as something fearsome and daunting. But perhaps it can be a good thing after all, because probably even greater than that negative connotation that we often associate change with is the certain fact that change offers in itself an opportunity. An opportunity that, in whatever lies beyond the door of uncertainty, we shall will ourselves through so that we may eventually overcome and ascend farther than we could ever imagine.

The world is currently on a precipice, and this time is a changing of tides. It is during these times that one either runs away from the clashing waves, only to succumb to them; or one hunts to surf these waves, in hopes of fulfilling a renewed promise. For Sci Wings, that means heeding the call for a greater purpose and a greater mission — to serve not only with the utmost integrity and excellence but also with compassion and benevolence unto a much larger reach — and so it must be.

Sapiens qui proposcit. In other words, wise is the person who looks ahead. These are the very words that have always been ingrained at the very core of every Sci Wing, and as this chapter comes to a close, in the very same way, we impart these lessons — positively looking ahead into what is yet to come.

And so, we thank you for continuing to ride this adventure with us, for allowing us to be your vanguards of truth, for allowing us to enter the doors of your respective journeys, and for partaking in this shared endeavor of ours. From us here at Sci Wings, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

We are excited for what there is to come, and we hope that you will continue to join us along the way.

For now, this has been Sci-Wings, the official English publication of the Philippine Science High School - Southern Mindanao Campus — in the service of the Pisay studentry.

Leaving behind a legacy ought to inspire the new breed of campus journalists, Sci-Wings proudly honors its newly graduated Batch 2024 campus journos. The efforts of Gabrielle Dwane Daquioag, Luis Angelo Escarilla, Faith Catherine Malintad, and Ethan Jake Malobago have pushed our publication to its current reputation.

Though their time as Schools Press Conference competitors and contributors to our school newspaper has come to an end, their remarkable crafts, honed over six years at PSHS-SMC, remain a path of guidance for future writers and storytellers. May your passion for journalism grow ever stronger.

The hallway convos, the kiosk chikas. Library study sessions, early morning classroom cramming; “academic” hangouts, sleepless exam bonding. And then suddenly, those laughs and lessons become memories.

Suddenly, you're not in the classroom chatting with your friends anymore. Suddenly, you're in a toga, in the gym, on the stage—suddenly, you’re graduating, and it all feels so unreal. The diploma in your hands stands as a memento of the past six years of trials and tribulations with your batchmates, six years spent forming core memories. Six years of working towards the future that seemed so long ago then, yet a future you're stepping into now.

As you continue your journey of realizing yourself, your aspirations, and your advocacies, know that you will always have supporters in the souls that you touched during your stay here. Your accomplishments and drive brought you to where you are now, and they show that you can achieve the goals and dreams you've always strived to reach.
