Don't Choose to Be Single Forever: A Personal Reflection

I just want to share my thoughts on being single. Now, let me clarify—I’m not single, but I’m speaking from a deeply personal experience about why I believe being single forever shouldn’t be an option.

A few years ago, I visited a close friend in his 50s who was in the hospital, suffering from excruciating stomach pain. He was battling acute kidney failure, and his chances of survival were slim. Watching him, I could see the agony in his face as he tossed and turned, trying to find relief. I did what I could—offering to massage his back to ease the pain near his kidneys. It seemed to help, and as I sat there with him, he quietly confessed something that struck me: he regretted never having a partner in life.

In that moment, I understood why. He didn’t have a wife or children by his side to support him when he needed it most. Sure, his nephews and siblings came to visit and help, but there’s a profound difference between having distant relatives show up and having someone by your side who has shared a life with you—a partner who offers not just care, but love and understanding. After multiple hospital visits, my friend passed away. He was buried on his sister’s land, but the empty space beside him was a reminder of the life he wished he had built.

The message I want to share is this: being single might feel liberating when you’re young, strong, and full of energy in your 30s and 40s. But as you age, you will inevitably need someone to lean on. I’m not saying to marry for the sake of having someone to take care of you, but to build a relationship rooted in love from the very beginning. Someone who will walk with you through both the good and the hard times.

So, don’t choose to be single forever. One day, when your strength fades, you will realize the immense value of having a loving partner or family by your side, offering the care and support that no one else can.

NOTE: Singles may have valid and personal reasons for choosing to remain single, and the best thing we can offer is respect for their decision. While we might have genuine concerns or even encouragement for them to find a partner, ultimately, it’s their life and their choice. Let’s honor their journey. Peace to all the singles out there.
