OFFICIAL STATEMENT

23 April 2024 - The Department of Education (DepEd) issues this statement in relation to a Facebook post of XFM Radyo Patrol Iloilo, labeled as Breaking News with the narrative “2 Maestra patay sang na heatstroke samtang nagaklase” (2 teachers die due to heatstroke while conducting classes). This post is highly inaccurate and misleading.

According to the Schools Division Office concerned, no teacher was reported to have died due to heatstroke.

Based on official records, one of our teachers in Sta. Barbara passed away last February 2024 due to Hypertensive Cardiovascular Disease, while another teacher passed away sometime in March 2024 due to Aneurysm. In both instances, the teachers were reportedly at home.

It is unfortunate that certain news outlets resort to sensationalizing the death of our teachers at the expense of true and factual reporting.

Most importantly, DepEd extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.

(updated 11:30 p.m.): Two public school teachers in the town of Santa Barbara, Iloilo died after suffering from "heatstroke," according to a report by radio station XFM Radyo Patrol Iloilo.

Leonil Salvilla, spokesperson of the Schools Division Office of Iloilo, confirmed the death of the teachers but clarified that the two did not suffer from heatstroke while holding their classes.

"Wala natabo sa sulod sang eskwelahan so probably didto sila gina-atake sa ila mga panimalay," he said.

The teachers from Santa Barbara Central Elementary School, according to Salvilla, had underlying medical conditions, which may be exacerbated by extreme heat.

Based on their death certificates, the two succumbed to "aneurysm" and "hypertensive cardiovascular disease."

ADVISORY

In order to allow learners to complete pending assignments, projects, and other requirements as the end of school year is fast-approaching, all public schools nationwide shall implement ASYNCHRONOUS CLASSES/DISTANCE LEARNING on April 15-16, 2024.

Likewise, teaching and non-teaching personnel in all public schools shall not be required to report to their respective stations.

However, activities organized by Regional and Schools Division Offices, such as Regional Athletic Association Meets and other division or school level programs, to be conducted on the aforementioned dates may push through as scheduled.

Finally, private schools shall not be covered by this advisory but shall have the option to implement the same.
