Here’s a sneak peek from the book:
“Ouch!”
“Shh...” Pierce’s soothing voice made sure to make her involuntarily squirm.
She touched her chest when he turned his back on her to search for his stuff. She wasn’t expecting that weird pull from Pierce's simple touch, so she had to double-check the rumble inside her chest.
He wanted to tend her wounds. So she obliged.
“Terribly painful.”
“Uh-huh. Mas mahapdi ‘to kung mai-impeksyon. So quit moving around and let me do my job here.”
He was concentrating on the task he had at hand, but she couldn’t. She was very mindful of how close his body was to hers. Nalalanghap niya ang manly scent nito. And it wasn’t because of perfume. He just really smelled like the man that he was.
”You seem so precise on this.”
She knew the acts so well. She had learned these basic techniques during her college days.
“It’s a simple plaster, Katrina. It’s not like I am performing major surgery here. This is a nasty wire cut," puna nito sa sugat.
Antipatiko.
She had to roll her eyes at that remark. “Yes. But you are doing it in a way as if you’ve been trained. Are you a nurse or a medical practitioner?”
“I don’t know how you unravel my aiding but, yes, I was trained. All of us had to go through that type of training anyway.”
“Oh. Why?”
“Because if by worst fate, you will be left alone in a dangerous territory and you’re wounded, and in terrible pain, you cannot call an ambulance. You are your own doctor out there. You tend your wound in any way you can, or you die in any way possible.”
Nothing much that he could do since he only had a disinfectant and cotton balls on hand.
“Your hands are gentle,” marahang puna niya.
A grin slowly appeared on his lips and damned her heart for doing a little dance inside her chest. “And your skin is so delicate and fair. Seriously, why are you so pale?”
“Got it from my mom.” She remembered her mother and the pain crept in again and she knew too well that it couldn’t linger or else she would instantly lose her mind so she had to look for a way to let it go.
“Mahirap ba ang training n'yo?”
She knew for a fact that Justin was part of a team that was doing dangerous tasks and performing delicate choices. She knew they were trained harder than officials. They were rouge borderline fugitives but they helped eliminate the dirt the world had to offer, but those are only the things Justin had told her. And based on the conversation the two did earlier, she was guessing Pierce was part of that team too.
His hand slowly touched her elbow so he could put an ointment there. She had to ignore the weird sensation again. “You wouldn’t want to go there, sweetheart.”
“I am just curious. Ano bang klaseng training ang pinagawa sa inyo? Do you have to crawl in the mud just like those I’ve seen in movies?”
“Ah, the basics.” He chuckled and clung to his head as if remembering really funny thoughts. We trained to survive, not to pass the training, Katrina. So, it wasn’t something you’ve seen in the movies. It was something you haven’t.”
“Ang evasive mo.”
“Because I signed an NDA, sweetheart. I will face mean consequences if I talk about it or anything that could give us away.”
“Oh," she nodded. “Pero resigned ka na, ‘di ba? Why’d you resign by the way?”
Napatigil ito sa ginagawa at nilinga siya.
“Did Justin tell you that? Because if he did, I will be coming to get him right now and punch the living, breathing human out of him.”
“Grabe ang morbid mo," napangiwi siya. "He didn’t say a thing about it. Narinig ko lang kayo kanina kaso ‘di ko na gaanong maintindihan kasi pumasok kayo sa kusina.”
Blangko pa rin ang expression nito.
“You were within earshot so we had to move away. Again, you cannot and shouldn’t hear our conversation and discussions about work. Let's get you to rest."
