Recognizing National Indigenous History Month and Indigenous Peoples Day.
“It's a day of festivity, reflection, and discerning about our shared history and what we can do to reflect on the past and reflect on doing things better together.”
Celebrations like these increase awareness of Indigenous Peoples and provide young Indigenous learners with an opportunity to learn about their culture, gain confidence, and be proud of who they are.
This afternoon, community members were invited for National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations, which included a contest, information drive, drumming, dancing, and speeches, by dignitaries. Also, it was great to see dancers and drummers from the community who showcased their talents to the learners of P*S.
We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all who participated in the activity to PantukanIS-IP Coordinator Mrs. Cherlyn H. Loria, faculty and staff of Pantukan Integrated School for their volunteer efforts. And to the Division IPED Coordinator Danilo Tomian Alcantara-P2, who traveled and graced the activity to remind and challenge the leaders to take better actions following a more humane, democratic, and civilized manner. Hence, to unite with all other indigenous peoples groups, institutions, civic organizations, advocates, and individuals who are invoking the Constitution’s mandate to recognize and protect all the rights of indigenous cultural communities, including rights to our ancestral domains, as stated in the Indigenous People’ Rights Act of 1997. We are thankful for the opportunity to once again celebrate with our community.
Everyone must continue to learn – and unlearn – every day. Listen to Indigenous voices. Build connections with Indigenous Elders, learners, staff, faculty, leaders and communities. Engage in meaningful dialogue.
I hope that, moving forward, we can build on and extend our celebration of Indigenous Peoples, bringing more awareness to issues, and providing Pantukanons with more opportunities to learn from our perspective in history, and participate in cultural activities.
On this day, Pantukan Integrated School faculty and staff and learners honored and learned more about Indigenous histories, languages, cultures, experiences and worldviews.
