President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. graces the inauguration of the expanded Petrochemicals Manufacturing Complex of JG Summit Olefins Corporation (JGSOC), the country’s leading petrochemical company and the largest polyolefin manufacturer in the Philippines, in a ceremony at the JGSOC Petrochemical Complex in Barangay Simlong, Batangas City on January 19, 2024.

Under the theme, ‘Celebrating our Nation’s Strength and Unity,’ President Marcos Jr. tours the 160-hectare facility and leads the unveiling of the commemorative marker. Joining him are JG Summit Holdings, Inc. (JGSHI) Chairman James L. Go, JGSHI President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Lance Gokongwei, and JGSOC President and CEO Arnel Santos.

JGSOC operates the only facility in the Philippines that processes naphtha into ethylene and propylene, key ingredients used for the production of common plastics. This not only benefits local plastic businesses by providing a steady supply of these materials, but also reduces costs, enables increased production and enhances competitiveness. Additionally, the plant produces other chemicals used in paints, plastics, rubber and other products.

In 2023, JGSOC commenced commercial operations of its US$1.3 billion expansion project, which boosted the overall site capacity to over one (1) million metric tons of petrochemical products annually.

The agriculture department made an assurance Tuesday that there is sufficient rice supply in the country based on the inventories made in December and January, in addition to the upcoming rice deliveries from overseas.

“As far as supply is concerned we have enough supply of rice – December, medyo healthy ang ating stocks. January, is healthy, there’s additional rice coming. But as far as the price is concerned, mahirap ma-predict, ang problema iyong world price is tumataas eh ‘no dahil sa El Niño,” Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel said in a press briefing in Malacañang.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos lead the ceremonial opening of the showcase area of the ‘Pasig Bigyang Buhay Muli (PBBM): Pasig River Urban Development’ project at the Jones Bridge in Binondo, City of Manila on 17 January 2024.

Spanning almost 500 meters, the showcase area is designed to function as a public park, featuring a pedestrian-friendly walkway on a concrete platform. It is equipped with a water fountain accented by lighting and includes seating areas that can also serve as an open-air venue for events.

The inauguration of the showcase area marks the start of a comprehensive urban renewal project led by the Inter-Agency Council for the Pasig River Urban Development (IAC-PRUD), chaired by Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) Secretary Jose Rizalino Acuzar.

The project aligns with Executive Order (E.O.) No. 35 signed by President Marcos Jr. on 25 July 2023 that aims to revitalize the Pasig River for improved transport, recreation and tourism. The goal is to transform the river into a center for economic activity and tourism, while enhancing transportation connectivity in Metro Manila and nearby areas. Notably, the First Lady has been the first to express her full support for the project.

Developed by the IAC-PRUD, the project's master plan includes mixed-use establishments, recreational amenities and the relocation of informal settler families. The government seeks to maximize the river's potential for economic development, drawing inspiration from waterways in other major cities worldwide.

January is Zero Waste Month where promoting proper waste segregation and effective waste management.

According to Mary Grace Bannagao of the Provincial Government Environment and Natural Resources Office (PG-ENRO) Laguna, it is crucial for individuals to cultivate zero waste habits within their homes and schools, as this significantly contributes to local waste management efforts.

“Garbage must be sorted at the household level before being thrown; we are responsible for managing our waste. Naturally, it also matters a great deal when our parents use these easy techniques at home, as this will greatly benefit our nature,” she said. | via Anna Mole, PIA4A

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Region IV-A gave its assurance to the public that there will be ‘no phaseout’ of jeepneys in the government’s Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP).

Interviewed at the Sulong Calabarzon program of the Philippine Information Agency, LTFRB Region IV-A Regional Director Renwick Rutaquio emphasized that the program does not seek to phase out traditional jeepneys but instead, replace units that are no longer roadworthy and emissions compliant.

“Actually, there is no phaseout. We are trying to modernize, but we are not phasing out the units. Those old vehicles or jeepneys that are no longer permissible due to their age and no longer suitable because they are smoky and deteriorated will be replaced with new units,” Rutaquio said.
