A club that attracts members and leaders solely for personal gain is one thatโs doomed from the start. Picture a group where people only show up to increase their own social capital or boost their resume, not because they genuinely care about the clubโs mission or the people within it. It may appear as if everything is fine initially. Members attend the meetings, and events are held, giving a sense of activity. However, when every relationship is motivated by personal gain, there is an obvious lack of true connection. Leaders may use the position to their advantage, treating it as a stepping stone to something bigger, and members only join to network or get access to resources, leaving behind the heart of what the club was meant to be. The excitement fades because no one is really invested in the success of the group as a whole. The energy that once made the club vibrant will slowly leak away, leaving behind a hollow structure with no real sense of purpose.
When leaders and members operate with self-interest as their guiding principle, trust is the first casualty. Trust is what holds any organizationโespecially a clubโtogether, but when people feel that others are only involved for what they can take, it becomes harder to build meaningful relationships. The leaders who focus solely on personal gain may make decisions that favor them in the short term but will not work out for the best interest of the club. They may choose options that give them attention or control but ensure that what they desire is achieved, not based on the greater good of the club. This alienates members who may have joined to seek a sense of belonging, camaraderie, or to work on a common cause. With no trust in leadership and amongst each other, the bond that keeps the club alive begins to disintegrate. As this lack of trust spreads, so does apathy.
Members will start attending fewer meetings, participating less in events, and take less pride in the club's achievements because they see no true commitment from others. Some will leave when they realize that the connections they hoped to form or the goals they once believed in no longer matter. Those who remain will likely only do so out of obligation, not passion. The club will start to feel more like a transactional experience than a place where people come together for something meaningful. What once felt like a vibrant group will become a collection of individuals, each looking out only for their own needs. The idea of shared purpose, the energy that fuels true community, will be lost. In the end, the club's failure will be inevitable. Lack of unity, no mutual care and respect, will undermine any effort to make the group sustainable.
Projects will fall apart, and events will be poorly attended. The leaders, who once thought they could leverage their role for personal advancement, will find themselves at the helm of a sinking ship with no one to support them. Without that true enthusiasm, camaraderie, and commitment born of shared vision, the club will be losing its sense of identity. What could have been a vibrant community will fade slowly into oblivion, leaving behind nothing but a memory of what it could have been had people cared a little more for the greater good than for personal gain.
