The newly-proclaimed Supreme Student Council(SSC) Officers of Isabela State University - Cabagan (ISUC) assumed office today, August 22, at the ISUC Conference Hall, Administration Building.

The students leaders were officially inducted after they took oath and vowed to hold dignity and excellence in service as they start their term for the 2024โ€“2025 academic year.

The program started with an invocation and the singing of the national anthem, followed by the opening remarks of Dr. Ramon Joseph Dauag, newly appointed Student Organization Unit Coordinator.

"We share similar journey because I was once a student leader and I can say that you made the right choice. I would like to say that you continue doing what you love to do; you continue serving the people; you continue staying true to your leadership promise and core as a person," Dauag said.

Afterwards, Asst. Prof. Sanyboy Beltran, Director of the Office of the Student Affairs and Services (OSAS), led the reading of the resolution and officially proclaimed the new set of SSC Officers.

Dr. Elizabeth Alonzo, Research and Development Director, presided over the acceptance of responsibilities of the council.

Meanwhile, Dr. Roselle M. Beltran, Academic Affairs Director, delivered her inspirational message before the new breed of leaders, reminding the student leaders to put love in what they do.

"Live with compassion with your heart because if you love what you do, then you find joy whatever services you deliver," Beltran said.

Beltran also emphasized that a leader should always listen to its constituents and work together with their fellow student leaders.

"Let me emphasize, that in leading an organization, listen to your constituents. Whenever you have meetings, learn from one another. Because the best time of leadership is the ability to listen, you also learn from your fellow officers. In doing so, you will learn together."

Cyrielle Faith Guemo, the new SSC President, conveyed her message, taking up all their past experiences that led them to serve again.

"I am reminded of the milestones and victories that we have achieved as a team. And today, I can proudly say that we have come a long way. There will be challenges, disagreements and there will be moments of doubt. But it is in these moments that our leadership will be tested. With the testimonies of our kuyas and ates and of our mentors, it fuel our passion to serve our fellow ISUCians," said Guemo.

The officers who assumed their respective roles alongside Ms. Guemo were Cedric Caliguiran, Vice President, Jeferson Pacifico, Secretary, Joshua Learez, Treasurer, Diether Naldoza, Auditor, Thom John Marayag, Accountant, James Howard Acio and Pichee Baccay as Information Coordinators, Vince Aggabao and Jhay-Em Serrano as Sentinels.

The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) caused controversy when it revealed that a family of five might be able to get by on a PHP 64 daily food budget. It means that they won't be considered "food poor" because they make approximately P20 each meal. These numbers are merely an illusion because the most pressing problems facing by our country are low incomes and overly expensive goods.

To suggest that PHP 64 a day is enough for meals undermines the efforts and sacrifices of countless families who are trying their best to provide for their loved ones. Such a statement feels out of touch with the reality faced by ordinary citizens in a country where many struggle daily to make ends meet.

In relation to the constant rise in living expenses, families are finding it more difficult to pay for necessities like food, healthcare, and education. It is almost impossible to stretch such a small amount across three meals a day due to the sharp price rises experienced by staple foods like rice, fruit and vegetables and protein sources.

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), food inflation rose to 6.7 percent in July 2024 from 6.5 percent in June 2024. This increase was attributed to higher inflation rates for meat, corn, fruits, eggs, dairy products, and ready-made food products.

As a a proud Filipino, I think Filipinos should be treated better. Our leaders need to be concerned with finding solutions that strengthen our most oppressed regions and offer authentic, long-term assistance.

We deserve a government that genuinely comprehends and empathizes with the problems of its people. As responsible citizens, we must keep pushing for policies that truly represent the needs and goals of the Filipino people.

In my view, the government should prioritize expanding job opportunities with decent wages, especially in rural areas where poverty is most acute. It's also probable that in response to address the issue of low wages, the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) is recommending that the P150 wage raise be passed by Congress immediately.

The government and the public should have open discussions regarding poverty, food security, and living expenses. This would contribute to the development of trust and confirm that lived experiences of people, rather than only economic models. As a nation, we must push for solutions that are grounded in reality and designed to uplift those who are most vulnerable.
