To foster cooperation, unity, and teamwork, students from the Bachelor of Science in Biology (BSBio) department gathered for their Symbioteam: Team Building Activity at the Eastern Samar State University (ESSU) Grandstand, on January 31.

Led by the department's organization, the Biology Society (BioSoc), together with their adviser, Prof. Jescel Hannah Ambida, the event was flocked by the students from first year to fourth year, which were divided into seven groups with their respective colors.

After a series of games, the event concluded with the awarding of snacks that served as the prizes for the winners.

The Blue team won as the overall winner, then the Orange and the Yellow team got the second and third place, respectively.

Gil Dulfo, the BioSoc President highlighted in an interview the importance of holding team building events.

"Similar to symbiosis in nature, we held the Team Building to improve cooperation, unity, and teamwork among Biology Students. As we start a new semester, it enhances the development of relationships, better interaction, and a positive academic environment", said Dulfo.

Further, he also extended his gratitude and satisfaction to his fellow biology students.

"I'm very happy with the result since I saw (my) co-students being happy, which empowered cooperation, teamwork and a feeling of community," he added.

The Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE) - Eastern Samar State University (ESSU) Student Chapter (SC) presented constitutional and by-laws revisions and resolutions on Friday, January 31, 2025 during the General Assembly held at the College of Engineering Drawing Room.

The event, led by incumbent PICE officers, highlighted minor revisions to the constitution and by-laws and was attended by civil engineering students.

Revisions like earlier election date, fine adjustments and committee restructuring were tackled by the officers.

In an interview, PICE-ESSU SC President Roselle Amidao emphasized the crucial role of the revisions.

"These revisions help make the organization more organized. The changes in officer qualifications ensure that responsible and academically capable students lead PICE-ESSU SC," Amidao said.

Additionally, Amidao emphasized that the revisions were based on their observations of the past semesters.

"We saw issues like unclear rules on leadership qualifications, difficulties in officer transitions, and concerns about event participation. Particularly, this year's election campaign had issues with the qualifications of candidates. And the transition was very frustrating because former officers were sometimes unreachable," Amidao added.

Meanwhile, discussions regarding financial reports and the 33rd anniversary of the PICE-ESSU SC were also tackled during the assembly.

The event concluded with open forums which highlighted the concerns of the civil engineering students present on the event.

Overall, the assembly served as a vital step in refining the structure of PICE-ESSUC SC, ensuring a more transparent and effective leadership moving forward.

Selected social work students from the Eastern Samar State University were among the institutions invited by the Junior Social Workers Association of the Philippines (JSWAP) National Organization to attend "Dialogue with Social Work Students: Bridging the Gaps between Theories and Practice" via online participation at the Old ICTC Building this January 24, 2025.

Accommodated mainly by the University of Cebu, the said conference is a joint collaboration through the initiative of the Social Welfare Institutional Development Bureau (SWIDB) by the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the National Association for Social Work Education, Inc., on which Social Work Departments across the Visayas region are requested to attend the conference on either a face-to-face or online platform.

Throughout the event, two segments took place that tackled a formal discussion of the social work profession topic and an open forum wherein students were given a chance to ask for inquiries on the topic discussed.

In an interview, the JSWAP-ESSU Chapter Vice President for Academics Marissa Manolid, explained that the goal of this participation is to help BSSW students better understand the field and learn how to put what they have learned in the textbooks into the real-life setting in the future.

"This dialogue is also to provide students updates on the social work profession. Furthermore, this gave additional ideas to the students regarding the different roles that the social worker plays in different fields, not just the advantages but also the issues and challenges they may encounter. So that we students will have an idea of what awaits us once we become registered social workers." Manolid stated.

The said forum aims to deeply understand the nature of the social work profession by means of its important functions and role, influential interventions, job assignment recommendations, and the increasing profession demand in the country.

What really does Christmas mean to you if it is with your family?

With the end of the first semester, most students on their dormitories or in boarding houses would probably in a busy statepacking their things to travel to their respective hometowns to reconnect with their origin soil through their parents and siblings. Though individuals get the privilege to do so, there are some students who may not have the lottery pass to reconnect with them. Despite this, there is still somebody that we can embrace unto ourselves as something that we can call as family as well.

Ellia Mae Barrion is related to this situation, the second lady starting from the left. She's a 19-year old freshman student, taking upBachelor of Science in Social Work. A working student who is capable of sustaining her academic needs, wherein time to her is a crucial part to divide her task to both studies and work, though hassle at some encounters.

โ€œMakuri, kulang hin time hit pag-aaram, pirme piraw kay nakaturog nga late tas nagmamata hin agap.โ€Barrion stated.

By the nature of the surroundings, the distance of her workplace and the university are luckily just kilometers away from Barangay Maypangdan to the city proper. But despite of this stable setup, the stretch from herself to her family is far from what it used to be. To be exact, she hasn't seen her family since the month of April due to the bombardments of activities being faced.

She originally came from the municipality of Dolores, Eastern Samar wherein she is the fifth among the eight children of her parents. Due to the livelihood scarcity of Barrion's parents, she is forced to venture to make a living. The feeling of living away with family is hard for her considering the limited connection of their bond, living for her to be sad at some time with a hint of loneliness.

But this factor does not give a hindrance to her to be productive. With her new ambiance to the program environment through their open discussions, hospitable faculty, and with her newly found friends. As such, Barrion feels loved with a sense of belongingness that is nearly similar to what her family expressed. Even with her friend Felexie Horca, (the first lady from the left) expressed that she treats her as if they are siblings.

โ€œWell, I think Ellia is a good friend just like any other friends that I have. I also know she's very busy with her responsibilities outside of school but she always manage to handle it so I find it agreeable that she's also a good student. Throughout the whole time that we've spent with her not just in the campus but also when we hang out, I can say that she's already a part of the family that we unconsciously and spontaneously built.โ€. Horca stated

Through this, she openly uttered that being with friends that truly understands you no matter how difficult your situation, is something that is worthy to be cherished of. Empowering the definition of what a family is, lies on the commonalities of your companion to be accepted and embodied despite the diverseness of personality present around.

โ€œI always treat my friends as my family kay I can somehow felt safe with you guys cheering me up whenever I feel down, tapos for the past four months or more na feel ko na nagca-care talaga kam haak bisan kon makaaringit kam danay. Aram ko ma it na binubuhat la it niyo para ma lighten up tak mood asya nga happy ak nga nakilala ko kam, that you guys are part of who and what I am now.โ€ Barrion answered optimistically as she laughed.

The essence of being with a family does not literally mean a group shared by blood or heredity. One may say that it really isn't about identical features or the complexity of looks as the old ones say. It can also be found through your loved ones, especially with your friends who truly support you to reach for the high stars together with the same shining dots that you shared compacted as a new constellation of hope.

"My RN Journey - 18 Years in the making."

Gladys William Baleรฑa. A determined mother, a devoted wife and a registered nurse. For Baleรฑa, the road to achieve her dreams to become a nurse was not paved with ease. It was a journey filled with challenges, long hours of hard work and moments of doubt. Yet, it was also a path built on perseverance, family support and the unshakable belief in her dream.

At the age of 34, Baleรฑa not only achieved her dream of becoming a nurse but also earned a spot among the Top 10 of the Philippine Nursing Licensure Exam (PNLE), a testament to the resilience that marked her 18-year journey.

Though she had always dreamed of becoming a nurse, her nursing career was far from traditional. After high school in 2006, she began her nursing journey at Adamson University with an academic scholarship. However, after a few months, the scholarship was discontinued due to financial constraints, and she was forced to pause her education.

Rather than giving up, Gladys took a different routeโ€”pursuing Practical Nursing (PN) as an alternative. "That time, nagmamadali akong mag aral at magkawork dahil gusto kong makapagpahinga na yung parents ko sa pagtatrabaho. I am the eldest, and at 19, I became the familyโ€™s breadwinner," she says.

Gladys graduated from the PN program in 2009 and worked as a nursing assistant at St. Luke's Medical Center-Global City for five years. For the next four years, she worked at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic in Abu Dhabi, one of the few Cleveland Clinics outside the United States.

These years spent in the clinical field allowed her to immerse herself in patient care, witnessing firsthand the value of nursing in improving lives. "Every time I assisted bedside nurses, I would tell myself, 'I can also do that. I want to do that. I can be more,'" she recalls. Even as she worked, her aspiration to become a registered nurse never faded. In fact, it became stronger with each patient she helped.

At 29, with years of invaluable experience behind her, Baleรฑa finally made the decision to return to school and pursue her nursing degree. However, the times have changed and it's more challenging for she had a daughter and a husband. Balancing her roles with her academic aspirations was no easy task but nothing would deter her. She was determined to pursue the dream that had been with her all those years and this time, her experience in patient care made her even more passionate about the field.

As if the pressures of balancing life werenโ€™t enough, she faced another significant obstacle: the COVID-19 pandemic. During the height of the crisis, she, along with many of her peers, was unable to complete the required clinical cases for the nursing licensure exam. The uncertainty of when they would be able to proceed caused great stress.

"I remember feeling anxious, seeing some classmates already becoming registered nurses while I was still waiting to complete my cases," she says. But instead of succumbing to the pressure, Gladys chose to focus on her goal. "I had been on this path for so long, and I knew that waiting a little longer would be worth it."

In January 2024, Gladys finally completed her cases. However, instead of rushing to take the exam immediately, she decided to give herself more time to prepare. "I wasnโ€™t going to take the exam just to passโ€”I wanted to do my best and ace it," she explains.

When she finally sat for the PNLE, the weight of the years spent working and studying was on her shoulders. But she wasnโ€™t alone in this journey. She credits much of her success to the unwavering support from her family and loved ones.

โ€œMy husband was my number one supporter. He gave me all the emotional, financial, and moral support I needed. He made sure that I could focus on my studies while he took care of everything else,โ€ she says. โ€œMy husband and my daughter are my rock, my constant, my endless source of inspiration and motivation.โ€

Baleรฑasโ€™ parents, who have been incredibly supportive from day one. Her mother came home to help care for her daughter while she focused on studying. โ€œHaving my mom and sister with me during the review was such a blessing. It gave me peace of mind knowing that my daughter was being well taken care of,โ€ she says.

Beyond her immediate family, Baleรฑa acknowledges the support of her extended family, friends, and mentors. โ€œMy sisters and relatives were always there to remind me that I could do it. Their belief in me was a constant source of strength,โ€ she reflects.

She also speaks of her faith as a cornerstone of her journey. โ€œI prayed a lot during this process. Every day, I asked God for strength and guidance. I wouldnโ€™t be here without His help,โ€ she says, gratefully.

When the results of the nursing licensure exam were announced, Baleรฑa was overwhelmed with emotion. "I couldnโ€™t believe it. It was surreal," she stated. "It was my goal from the very start, but when it happened, I felt so grateful to everyone who helped me along the way. This achievement is a reflection of all the hard work and sacrifices, not just mine but also my familyโ€™s."

Now that sheโ€™s a licensed nurse, Baleรฑa has her sights set on giving back to the community. "I plan to work as a Community Health Nurse and continue my education." she said

Balenaโ€™s 18-year journey to becoming a nurse is a testament to perseverance, the power of experience and the support of loved ones. Her story serves as a beacon of hope for others, proving that no matter how long the road, you can achieve your dreamh with dedication, faith and the support of those who believe in you.
