Studio Gikan

Studio Gikan A creative digital studio empowering purpose-led brands and initiatives by transforming me to we. We collaborate with you in turning intent to impact.

"Gikan is a local term for source or origin." Where Branding Integrates Purpose

The days of brand storytelling solely focused on profit-driven messages are over. There is a reason why people long for inspiring and empowering stories. They want messages and images which resonate – not just those which relate to who they support and what they buy. Our team comes from the powerful intersection of a

rt, digital marketing, and social good. Together we have more than ten years of experience helping individuals and organizations design and develop a brand voice that speaks to the heart. Gikan is a local term for source or origin. With our diverse team of graphic designers, illustrators, creative writers, design thinkers, artivists, and community organizers, we collaborate with you in turning intent to impact. Our Virtues

Our virtues guide our purpose. And our purpose propels our direction. We believe that our virtues strengthen our why. Curiosity, generous listening, collaborative spirit, radical creativity, and sincerity are guide attributes that enable us to stay centered in the journey. Our Mission

Cultivating a heart-forward world

We live in a highly-informed and globally competitive world, but also a fractured and fragmented one. As the longing for meaning and resonance become stronger, cultivating heart-forward spaces has never been so essential.

Meet Maimai - a curious, adventurous, and compassionate Visayan girl.

Maimai explores around and through the local forest in the storybook-inspired website for the Sarang Foundation.

She finds a little bird that has fallen from its nest. Maimai has no second thoughts - she holds the bird kindly, climbs a nearby tree, and returns it to the nest with its brood. Her face exudes the delight of pure care.

It is the mission of the Sarang Foundation to help nurture Visayan children like Maimai as they grow into thought leaders and changemakers.

It is our joy and honor to work with Sarang Foundation.

We have been working closely with the founder, Mia Watanabe who has confessed to us her quest for a socially-conscious design team.

The logo for Sarang Foundation features the native Philippine scops owl with a book.

The owl keenly watches over the forest, especially in the dark. It swoops swiftly and silently in response to sounds and sights. It represents loyalty and care.

The book represents the curiosity and open-mindedness of children. Nurtured by experience and love, developing good judgment: the gaining of wisdom and growth.

The Visayan cultural aspect of the logo is seen through the tattoo-like design.

As our collaboration turns intent to impact, we deepen our work further by supporting Sarang Foundation and Kikik Kollektive through per project percentage.

We are recipients of compassion, generosity, and creative liberation. We aspire to keep giving back and circulating the good by supporting these organizations.

- Sarang Foundation: supports socially conscious, small businesses in return for a pledge by the businesses to assist with Sarang’s education and community development projects. The name “Sarang” comes from “masarangan,” which is the Hiligaynon term for “to be able to do."

- Kikik Kollektive: connects artists with grassroots communities and with each other through the inspiration and aspiration of localization, public spaces, and communal reciprocity.

Sashimi meets Ibos

Our digital design studio came to be because of a determined search and some moments of serendipity.

Our advisor Miss Sashimi spent many days looking for a creative team to collaborate with. The mission was to create a beautiful website without compromising the essence of sincere storytelling.

Miss Sashimi discovered our work then in Artivism Iloilo. She felt a deep sense of resonance and connection. Through a heartfelt first message, a teary video meeting, and lots of goofy and profound discussions, we are here now - collaborating to help more individuals, organizations, and communities. Moreover, our work together provides funding for Sarang Foundation and Kikik Kollektive.

What made it even more beautiful?

She dreamed of meeting talents from Iloilo.

It came true.

There is a discovery that awe is experienced through moral beauty - particularly when we witness people doing good to others.

The Book "Awe: The New Science of Everyday Wonder and How It Can Transform Your Life" by Dacher Keltner reveals that the experience of awe makes us calmer and kinder. Awe also makes us more creative, honest, and deeply connected to the planet and other beings.

At Studio Gikan, we aspire to turn me into we - so that we can let awe become our invitation for community, positive impact, and transformation.

One of our resident graphic artists Sasha Cabais reflects on the experience of designing art for the article, "Philippines bridge project feared to be death knell for endangered Irrawaddy dolphins" by investigative Journalist Rhick Lars Albay.

"It was such an opportunity to work on this project. We never thought that there were species of Irrawaddy dolphins so close to us. We normally would think dolphins are found in other parts of the globe.

The last time I saw a dolphin was when I was in Hong Kong, so imagine our jaws dropping when we found out that there was a pod of dolphins living in the Iloilo Strait.

Our designs may be simple, but we hope that they could be informative enough to reach many people. We hope we could bring enough awareness to protect them."

What if 'Build' for us means 'Destroy' for them?

---
DID YOU KNOW: With most recent estimates revealing that just six to 13 mature dolphins remain in the Iloilo-Guimaras Straits, Oceana Philippines warns that this subpopulation could be extinct by 2040 if no much-needed interventions are taken.

But with the proposed 43-kilometer bridge aimed to connect provinces in the Philippines' Visayas region, the survival of these endangered dolphins is critically threatened.

Read more about it through the lens of investigative journalist, Rhick Lars - https://eb.news/rRxn5KwNTyeA

Our team values this opportunity of creating commissioned-collab digital art and infographics for Rhick and Global Shapers Iloilo Hub. We've dedicated many of our Artivism.iloilo projects and initiatives to spread ecological awareness not just among artists but in local communities.

In our offline lives, we are keen snorkelers and marine life admirers. We aspire to continuously use our gifts, awareness, and even our anxieties in amplifying essential stories like that of the Irrawaddy dolphins.

"Kapawa sa Kadudulmon" depicts the beautiful and elegant but critically endangered deer species, the Visayan spotted deer.

This majestic deer can evade vile predators even in the darkest of the night, she can see through - even the purest of intention.

She is kind and keen, playful and loving. She is one of a kind, she is the light amidst darkness.

“The Lotus Bearer”

The Lotus plant usually grows in muddy and murky waters, but despite this, it has been regarded that Lotus stays pure and clean. Thus, the Lotus has become a symbol of remaining pure in heart and mind. The Lotus also represents being well-grounded, remembering one’s roots, new beginnings, and wisdom.

(A reference to today's politics, where it is a struggle to stay pure in an environment of corruption; where it takes a lot of courage to embody equanimity.)

It has been such a great honor to conceptualize, design, and give life to the official logo of the Iloilo Mega Book Fair - IMBF.

With diversity, inclusion, and localization at heart, our team came up with a logo that encompasses folk art and contemporary appeal.

Our teammates Marrz Capanang, MA Tuvilla, and Zak Bravo were part of the recently concluded 5th Iloilo Mega Book Fair - Marrz was the Art Director of some Hiligaynon and Kinaray-a illustrated children's books launched in the event, while MA and Zak worked as illustrators for a children's book and a comics book respectively.

This has enriched our design process more as we are also part of such a vibrant and supportive community that aims to provide books for all.

Working on the design aspects of the Irrawaddy Dolphins Project with Global Shapers Iloilo Hub has been an enriching experience.

We did not only have an exciting time brainstorming and co-creating but we also shared many moments of rewilding. It was humbling to dive deeper into the beauty, science, and fragility of these sentient beings.

This , GSIH launches “ILO-Ilawud" by raising awareness of the invaluable marine life that calls the Iloilo-Guimaras Strait HOME.
