𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒

Today, we mark the 126th year since our country has been liberated from the Spanish Colonialization.

On June 12, 1898, Philippines' independence from Spain was declared at Emilio Aguinaldo's house in Cavite el Viejo, now known as Kawit in the province of Cavite.

The Americans granted Philippine independence on July 4, 1946. From 1946 to 1961, the Philippines observed Independence Day every fourth of July. It was only in 1962 when President Diosdado Macapagal moved the date of Philippine independence to June 12, in observance of the 1898 declaration.

As we celebrate Independence Day this very day, let us not forget the many sacrifices our heroes did for our country to gain independence from those that had colonized us.

“Sarbey muna bago magsagawa ng programa.”- Lived

Ito ang naging pahayag ni Dr. Wendell A. Lived, ang instruktor ng Fil 112 (Filipino sa iba’t ibang Disiplina) kaugnay ng isinagawang mga sarbey ng mga mag-aaral mula BS Nursing, BS Hospitality at Tourism Management, at BS Accountancy sa San Mariano, Bantay, Ilocos Sur noong Mayo 28 at Hunyo 4, 2024.

Layunin ng mga mag-aaral na tasahin ang kaalaman, pag-uugali, at gawi ng mga residente ng nabanggit na komunidad ukol sa mga usaping pangkalusugan, paghahanda ng pagkain at sanitasyon, eko-turismo, at literasiyang pananalapi.

Ang resulta ng sarbey ay magiging pundasyon ng mga mag-aaral upang gumawa ng programang nakakonteksto sa pangangailangan ng komunidad.

Ang gawaing ito ang nagsilbing service-learning ng mga mag-aaral bilang paglalapat ng mga kompetensing kanilang natutuhan sa mga kursong Fil 112 at PLT 100 (Paulthenics) partikular na ang pagsasagawa ng pananaliksik, pakikipagtalasatasan, pakikipagkapuwa-tao, at higit sa lahat, pagpapahalaga sa sariling larangan.

Ang nasabing gawain ay sa ilalim ng pamamatnubay nina Dr. Lived at G. Edmundo A. Bunagan, mga fakulti ng Department of Arts & Sciences and Teacher Education.

𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐬 I 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐎𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦

Selected second-year students from the Department of Arts and Sciences and Teacher Education and Department of Business, Hospitality, and Tourism Management recently reached out to the community for an academic community outreach on June 8, 2024.

With the theme “Rooted in Faith, Empowered by Knowledge,” this catechism session catered to elementary pupils, providing them with a deeper understanding of the Catholic faith's core tenets.

Divided into five clusters — Bantay West, Bantay East, San Vicente, Sto. Domingo, and Magsingal — the students aimed to spread knowledge and strengthen the faith within their local communities.

Furthermore, the program fostered a sense of community engagement among the college students. By dedicating their time and talents to this initiative, they demonstrated their commitment to social responsibility and their passion for serving others.

This community outreach program is a commendable initiative undertaken by the DASTE and DBHTM students. Through this initiative, they fostered a positive impact within their communities and served as an inspiration for others to engage in similar service-oriented projects.

𝓗𝓪𝓹𝓹𝔂 𝓕𝓸𝓾𝓷𝓭𝓪𝓽𝓲𝓸𝓷 𝓓𝓪𝔂!

SPC Foundation in Ilocos Sur

The Sisters of the Congregation of St. Paul of Chartres (SPC) ventured into Vigan, once a center of Spanish colony, on June 5, 1905, on the invitation of Bishop Dennis Joseph Dougherty six hundred forty seven (647) years after the seat of the Diocese of Nueva Segovia was transferred from Cagayan to Vigan, Ilocos Sur in 1758.

As American Protestantism made its entry into the Philippines, the Iglesia Filipina Independiente popularly known as the Aglipayan Church was dividing the ranks of the secular clergy. Gregorio Aglipay, a priest from Batac, Ilocos Norte, was consecrated the Supreme Bishop of the Aglipayan Church on January 18, 1903 – a few months ahead of the consecration of Bishop Rooker and Bishop Dougherty in Rome.

There were seven (7) pioneer Sisters in Vigan. They were Sr. Marthe de St. Paul, the Superior and Foundress, St. Suzanne de Sacre Coeur, Sr. Gilbert Andios, St. Theophane de la Croix Fleury, Sr. Julia de Benoit des Remedios, Sr. Josephine Rappeport, and Sr. Madaleine Lau. They took over the Girls’ College of Our Lady of the Rosary started by the Dominican Sisters who left when the friars withdrew after the Americans won over Spain. The community of SPC Sisters who planted the seed of Paulinian Education that has grown through the years became the foundation of the first Paulinian school in Luzon.

The Vigan Paulinian Family takes pride in being the Cradle of Paulinian Education in northern Luzon. It is one among the schools owned by the Congregation of SPC Sisters spread in the Philippines.

The event provided the fourth-year students with crucial knowledge and resources to utilize and navigate the SSS as they enter the workforce.

This initiative exemplifies the school's dedication to equipping its students not just with quality education but also with the knowledge and resources needed to thrive in the professional world with confidence.

𝐈𝐍 𝐏𝐇𝐎𝐓𝐎𝐒 I The Department of Arts & Sciences and Teacher Education students and faculty concluded the Education Week 2024 Celebration on May 18, 2024, through a community extension service at San Mariano, Bantay, Ilocos Sur.

The DASTE faculty members provided the adults with catechesis through the Basic Ecclesial Communities (BEC). On the other hand, the pre-service teachers also had the opportunity to engage different students in the said community through the literacy program. The BEC and the literacy program are curriculum-based and emphasize the competencies the pre-service teachers gained in their different professional education courses.

Furthermore, the activities enabled pre-service teachers to foster strong community engagement that provides learning opportunities to develop them holistically, preparing them for the real world and empowering them to become self-reliant.

The DASTE family would like to express their sincerest gratitude to Brgy. San Mariano, Bantay, Ilocos Sur, for accommodating us and allowing us to be one with the community.

𝐈𝐍 𝐏𝐇𝐎𝐓𝐎𝐒 | The Department of Arts & Sciences and Teacher Education students and faculty marked the second day of Education Week 2024 on May 17, 2024, by visiting the SPED Centers of the Bantay West Integrated School and the Vigan Central School to interact with the SPED teachers and students with special needs.

In the afternoon, the students engaged in a series of Team Building Activities facilitated by the faculty.

The activities enabled pre-service teachers to develop a strong sense of empathy for children with special needs while also developing communicative and collaborative abilities. This transformed them into visionary guides who instilled a love of learning in their pupils.

The DASTE family would like to express their sincerest gratitude to Bantay West Integrated School and Vigan Central School for accommodating us and allowing us to interact with students with special needs.

Gestole as the resource speaker.

The session empowered the attendees, providing them with valuable tools to become not just educators, but visionary guides who cultivate a love of learning in their students.

St. Paul College of Ilocos Sur achieved an impressive 80.00% overall passing rate in the May 2024 Philippine Nurses Licensure Examination, with 4 out of 5 takers successfully passing the exam.

On the first of May, we celebrate Labor Day, a national holiday that has been commemorated since 1903. This day serves as a tribute to the dedication and contributions of the Filipino workforce.

Before the day ends, we would extend our sincerest gratitude to all Filipino workers and give honor to the hardship, determination, and resilience of all our workers nationwide who work and sacrifice themselves in contributing to the betterment of our nations.

May we continue to honor and empower our workforce, the very foundation upon which a brighter future for the Philippines is built.
