President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. delivered his third State of the Nation Address (SONA) today July 22 2024 at the Batasang Pambansa in Quezon City. Highlights included discussions on economic recovery, healthcare improvements, education initiatives, climate action, and national security.

Brighter Education

As the Nationwide Brigada Eskwela for the opening of public schools officially kicked off, it is also right to address the issues surrounding the second home of children, the education department. The dates match: the State of the Nation Address (SONA) of the President and the Brigada Eskwela are on the same fateful day. As parents and guardians help maintain the schools their children attend in, it is also right to know what the government did and will do to help the department since their has been turmoil on its administration due to politics.

It is said that a nation is only as strong as its weakest student. According to the Programme for the International Student Assessment (PISA) 2022, the Philippines ranked 77 out of 81 countries in reading comprehension. This points to the challenges faced by our education sector, where students lack the learning curve and teachers lag behind in skills and training despite the administration's pursuit of economic as well as infrastructure growth.

In his State of the Nation Address at the Batasang Pambansa, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. laid out his plans to find solution to the challenges and hurdles of education. The appointment of the new Education Secretary, Juan Edgardo "Sonny" Angara, comes at a crucial time, following the resignation of former Secretary and Vice President Sara Duterte. While the political agenda behind this desertation remain clouded, the focus must remain on addressing the issues left behind within the education sector.

President Marcos highlighted several initiatives, including the signing of the "Kabalikat sa Pagtuturo Act" which grant teachers allowances for teaching needs inside the classroom. He also removed the burden of "utang-tagging" that prevents teachers from renewing their licenses due to debt. Furthermore, the government has committed it's resources to constructing more classrooms for students, connecting them to the internet, developing AI and technology for learning, and integrating Technical Vocational Education into the Senior High School program.

However, the core issues of leveraging student performance and retraining and upskilling teachers remain unaddressed. Teachers continue to face a significant administrative workload, hindering their ability to focus on what is important and inside their purview, which is to teach. While the government has attempted to reduce these tasks by hiring additional employees to aid teachers, the measures in place have been a little insufficient. Teachers still find themselves sitting down on their desks with heaps of paperwork rather than giving their time to students and their learning.

Another problem lies the education system itself. We have lost our attention to the learning curve of children from Kindergarten to grade 3. The focus must shift back to the basics of student learning: reading and comprehension, writing, and arithmetic and analytics. It is deeply concerning that the quality of education in the early grades remains lacking and ineffective. Without a solid foundation in the early years of the student, they will continue to struggle with comprehension and critical thinking skills when they reach higher grades. What is alarming that DepEd Region 4A reports that students in grades 7 and 8 struggle reading. If we fail to address this issue, we might find ourselves with illiterate high school students and college freshmen that are unable to comprehend what they are reading.

The 3rd SONA has ended and promises to solve issues of the education sector were laid out. Our future generations deserve a robust education system that equipsthem with the skills, intellect and prowess to thrive in a competitive world. Our focus must remain on reducing administrative burdens on teachers, improving foundational education, and continuously refining our approach to ensure that our students leave the schools with sharp wit and sound mind and body.

The President said it for the West Philippine Sea, but it should also apply to our education sector: "The Philippines will not yield; we will not waiver." With the new Secretary Angara at the helm, we can only hope our future is brighter than our past performances suggest.
