The first ever high-end home theater to open in Manila.

Creating a design theme for a client is no small matter, the expectations are sometimes herculean - you have to let your own and the client's vision emerge together.

Gondolin Theater is very much the same, even discounting the fact that it is to be our showroom, and the design vision is only our own.

In our minds, Gondolin was to be the holy grail of our creations yet, named after the greatest city of the Elves in the first age, from the Lord of the Rings canon.

The theater was to be an ageless classical design due to its namesake, but also because at Oto Ryu we simply love classical designs.

The predominance of the wood accents alludes to the characteristic of the Elven culture, as well as the gray color motif of its fabric - signifying the sadness and wisdom of the Elven race.

With five seats in a narrow room of 7.5m x 4.2m dimensions, it was a big challenge trying to fit all 28 speakers - high spatial resolution computations showed that the final theater lay-out should be 12.4.12. Basically, 12 speakers on the ear level (bed layer), 4 subwoofers, and 12 speakers overhead.

And well into the construction, many things had to be changed on the fly due to building restrictions and policies. One big casualty of that was the limitation to our ceiling height, which severely placed a limit on the height of our second row.

The iMax designed screen was nearly scrapped as the ceiling limitations were compounded by the now restricted position of our projector and screen size itself.

And then there were the labyrinth of plumbings and other pipes that we had to navigate through the ceiling for the placement of atmos speakers. It was a gruelling task - to never sacrifice speaker placement and function while following building and city codes. So much had to change - but the quality of the cinematic experience was to be maintained. There was no question about that.

And so we worked on it. One gruelling day at a time, one issue that needed resourcefulness and creativity at a time. One at a time. One at a time.
