Sapphirus MassKarade Ball raises 1M for Bagyo Kristine At the 2024 MassKarade Ball “SAPPHIRUS” Edition, held on October 25 at Roy’s Hotel and Convention Center, 1 million pesos was raised in cash donations for the GMA Kapuso Foundation. The funds are part of a compassionate effort by the foundation to provide assistance to those deeply impacted by the recent calamity, particularly in the Bicol Region. With this, the Bacolod Yuhum Foundation initiated this program.

Barangay Granada claims 2nd Grand Slam victory as Champion of the 45th MassKara Festival Street Dance and Arena Competition

With a dazzling display of creativity and talent, Barangay Granada emerged as the champion of the 45th MassKara Festival Street Dance and Arena Competition, held today, October 27 at the Paglaum Sports Complex.

This victory marks Granada’s second grand slam win, solidifying its reputation as a powerhouse in the annual festival, with previous titles won from 2014-2016 and from 2022 to this year.

This year’s festivities showcased exceptional performances from all participants, but Granada stood out, taking home an impressive prize of 1 million pesos. They swept all minor awards, including the Bacolod Yuhum Choice Award, Best in Theme and Concept, Best in Music, Best in Mask, Headdress and Costume, and the Connectivity in Motion Award.

The Pillar of Dance Excellence Award was presented to Panoy “Segundo” Jesus Cabalcar Jr., who received 10,000 pesos for his contributions to dance in the community.

Barangay Bata secured the 1st Runner-Up position, earning a prize of 500,000 pesos, while Barangay 12 claimed the 2nd Runner-Up spot receiving 300,000 pesos.

Other participating barangays included Barangay 35, Barangay 18, Barangay 21, and Barangay 6.

Congressman Greg Gasataya expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the organizers. “We would like to thank all the organizers for their sacrifices and for overcoming the challenges to make this year’s MassKara Festival one of the most well-attended concerts and activities in Bacolod’s history, despite the rain.”

The event was graced by distinguished guests, including Makati Mayor Abegail Binay and Congresswoman Camille Villar, Deputy Speaker and Representative of the Lone District of Las Piñas City. Congressman Greg Gasataya, along with councilors Thaddy Sayson, Vladimir Gonzalez, Cindy Roxas, Simple Distrito, Israel Salanga, Em Ang, Celia Flor, Al Espino, Jason Villarosa, Kalaw Puentevella, Psyche Marie Sy, and SK Chairperson Danna Marie Barzo, also attended.

The celebration concluded with a spectacular drone show and fireworks display at Paglaum Park and Stadium, marking yet another unforgettable MassKara Festival.

Barangay 39 was crowned Elektroika Diva, while Barangay 29 triumphed in the Float Competition.

Bacolod City’s MassKara Festival spirit came alive with dazzling lights and pulsating beats at the Elektroika Diva and Float Parade on a drizzling Saturday evening at the Bacolod City Government Center.

Glittering costumes and colorful floats illuminated the streets during the parade from Megaworld’s The Upper East to the BCGC grounds.

Dancing diva Nikka Marie Peñol of Barangay 39 was crowned this year’s MassKara Festival Elektroika Diva. Penol walked away with P75,000. Ashley Nicole Belnas of Barangay 29 and Althea Judema of Barangay Pahanocoy won first runner- up with P30,000 and second runner-up with 25,000, respectively.

This year’s grand winner of the Electric Float competition also came from Barangay 29. The Saphirrus-inspired float was designed by Jovic Gordillo and John Joseph Suarnaba.

“I’m speechless. It was unexpected because we had many struggles before the competition, especially with the heavy rains that almost hindered all our preparations,” said Barangay 29 Punong Barangay Leonard Pascua.

Barangay 29 received a P300,000 cash prize, while Barangay Pahanocoy and Barangay 17 were adjudged first and second runners-up, receiving P200,000 and P150,000, respectively.

Judges for the annual electrifying event included Cagayan Economic Zone Authority Administrator and CEO Kristina Ponce Enrile, Demi Padua, Dr. Mark Gan, Tina Cuevas, Kelly Prehn, Rhiza Pascua, Bey Pascua, Derek Flores, Stanley Ng, Cleofe Abiso, and Atty. Annette Gozon-Valdes, President and CEO of GMA Films and President of GMA Worldwide.

39 teams compete for 2nd Mayor Albee Benitez beach volleyball tourney.

Powerhouse teams from the University Athletic Association of the Philippines are gearing up for action-packed matches at the USLS Sandbox during the 2nd Mayor Albee Benitez Beach Volleyball Open Tournament in Bacolod City, taking place from October 21-24.

“We’re very overwhelmed by the tournament having 39 teams, most coming from Manila, especially UAAP schools, as well as local schools and club teams, all here to compete,” said Carmela Gamboa, tournament organizer of the 2nd Mayor Albee Benitez Beach Volleyball Tournament.

National University’s duo, Rain Skyler Gemarino and Alexander Iraya, are preparing for the challenge as they gear up for the upcoming UAAP Beach Volleyball Season next month. The Negrense pair also took the opportunity to spend time with their families for the MassKara Festival.

“It’s the best tournament so far for us to prepare,” said Iraya, who hails from Silay City.

The teams will compete in both the women’s and men’s open categories until October 24, Thursday.

The volleyball tournament is part of the annual MassKaralympics, organized by the Volleyball Association of Negros Island, Inc. in cooperation with the Bacolod Yuhum Foundation and sanctioned by the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF).

Road closures set for MassKara Festival highlights

The Bacolod Traffic Authority Office (BTAO) will implement a full road closure on a portion of Lacson Street starting at 8 PM, Tuesday, October 22, until 5 AM, October 28.

The early ingress is to allow the installation of stages, booths, and kiosks for the upcoming Food and Music Festival at the Lacson Tourism Strip from October 25 to 27, explained BTAO Deputy Jose Antonio Robello.

Organizers will mount 6 stages for performers, including the band Cueshe and other national entertainers and personalities.

The temporary road closure will stretch from the intersection of BS Aquino Drive and Lacson Street to the intersection of South Capitol Road until Sunday at 5 AM.

All vehicles, including public utility vehicles traveling northbound, are advised to use Gatuslao Street, while those heading southbound will need to pass along Aguinaldo Street.

A one-way traffic scheme will be implemented on both Gatuslao and Aguinaldo streets.

“Huge stages will span along Lacson Strip, which is why we have to implement a full road closure for safety reasons,” Robello explained.

Motorists can detour along BS Aquino Drive and San Juan Street.

On October 26, a full road closure from 4 PM until 8 PM will be implemented on the portion of Circumferential Road from The Upper East Avenue (Megaworld) to St. Francis Street for the Elektroika Diva and Float Parade.

The parade is set to assemble from The Upper East Avenue all the way to the Bacolod City Government Center.

Partial road closure of The Upper East Avenue is set for October 23 to 27 for the MassKara Festival Food Fest.

With the impending heavy traffic for the remaining highlights of the MassKara Festival, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), in cooperation with BTAO, has designated the Bacolod Negros Occidental Economic Highway (BANOCEH) as a detour for all motorists, especially for cargo and cane trucks.

“We have to provide options for haulers because there must be an ordinance for using BANOCEH. As of now, it’s just a suggestion, an option because of the festivities, but we can’t fully implement the truck ban along Circumferential Road yet, pending approval by the city council,” Robello added.

For the much-awaited 45th Smilestone MassKara Festival 2024 Street Dance & Arena Competition on October 27, a full road closure will be implemented starting from the BCGC replica beside Bacolod Public Plaza on Araneta Street up to the Paglaum Sports Complex on Hernaez Street from 2 PM until 5 PM.

The Bacolod Yuhum Foundation, in cooperation with the Bacolod City Police Office, will strictly prohibit sharp objects and tumblers inside the sports complex. No persons with disabilities (PWDs), senior citizens, pregnant women, or children below 10 years old will be allowed to enter the arena. Admission is free but on a first-come, first-served basis.

The MassKara Festival is the heart and soul of Bacolod, showcasing the city’s creativity, pride, and spirit. Spectators are expected to fill the streets to witness vibrant performances, culminating in an exciting showdown at the Arena Competition.

The Magician dazzles in first win for 3rd Mayor Albee Benitez 10-ball tilt

The Filipino pool legend Efren “The Magician” Reyes got a convincing victory against local cue master Mark Ace Jungco (7-3) at their first match for the 3rd Mayor Albee Benitez 10-ball tournament at the Ayala Malls Capitol Central Activity Center in Bacolod City, Monday, October 21.

Reyes took a commanding lead in the first three sets (3-0) before Jungco was able to punch back in the fourth set.

The Magician clear the sixth rack. Jungco rallied a couple of sets until his childhood idol secure rest of the rack and the win in front of the jampacked crowd at the mall.

“This time I got lucky,” Reyes gladly said as he thanked his fans and supporters.

He will face up against cue master Ronie Grecia for his second match at 4pm, tomorrow, October 22, at the Activity Center.

A total of 128 cue masters compete for this year’s 10-ball tilt which is part of the annual MassKaralympics for the MassKara Festival 2024.

Along with Reyes, pool icon Francisco “Django” Bustamante will match up with Japhet Narciso in the single matches for the annual pool tournament tomorrow 1pm, at the Activity Center.

Last year, both Reyes and Bustamante had exhibition matches alongside Mayor Benitez for the MassKaralympics spectacle.

Also joining this year’s tournament were Filipina world champion Rubilen "Bingkay" Amit and 9-year old pool phenom Michael Inigo Feliciano.
