Apayao State College- Bachelor of Physical Education (ASC-BPEd) and Luna Central School (LCS) formally entered into a partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on November 12, 2025, at Luna Central School, Poblacion, Luna, Apayao.
The partnership aims to establish the joint implementation of Project ASC (Academic Support through Chess): Enhancement of Cognitive Abilities among Youth through Chess Education. The project is anchored on the research โThe Multi-Faceted Benefits of Chess on the Lives of Chess-Playing Students,โ authored by BPEd Program Chair Dr. Marfred T. Sanchez, which was recently recognized at the 15th Joint CorCAARRDโCIEERDeC Regional Symposium on Research, Development, and Extension (RDE) Highlights and 8th Regional Student Research Congress held on October 28โ30, 2025, at Ifugao State University, Nayon, Lamut, Ifugao.
Both institutions affirmed their commitment to strengthening academic collaboration in line with Article XIV, Section 19 of the 1987 Philippine Constitution, which mandates the promotion of physical education and sports programs in educational institutions.
Under the MOA, ASC-BPEd will provide technical expertise, research support, faculty involvement, and program monitoring. The extension team is led by project proponent Dr. Marfred T. Sanchez, with facilitators Mr. Jaylord Q. Guillermo, Mr. Judel B. Tabason, Mr. Diether John S. Ballinan, Mr. Vincent F. Navarro, Ms. Angelika T. Managad, and Ms. Mitzi Gay B. Cayde. Meanwhile, LCS will facilitate the implementation of the program by providing logistical support, ensuring active participation in training activities, and utilizing the validated chess workbook developed from ASCโs research. The school will also serve as the primary site for data gathering and evaluation.
The partnership is expected to strengthen chess education in the locality and provide evidence-based, community-responsive support to LCS learners.
