Ang Pamanang Di Nakalimutan

Matatayog na mga hinulmang bato. Mga sira-sirang pader na wari’y kinulayan ng berde at abo. Mga bintanang kawangis ng lumang salamin na binahiran ng tila tsokolateng alikabok. At nakakabinging katahimikan na siyang tanging musikang tumutugtog sa dalawa kong tainga. Ito ay iilan lamang sa mga katangiang aking nakita at kakaibang sensasyon na aking naramdaman ng mga oras na iyon, habang binabaybay ng dalawa kong mata ang matatayog at malawak na lumang simbahan at kumbento ng Patnongon, sa Antique na tinagurian ring “The Ruins” ng Patnongon.

Ang lumang simbahan at kumbento sa bayan ng Patnongon na kinilala rin bilang isa sa pinakamagandang simbahan ng probinsya ay may layong 25 kilometro mula sa kapital ng probinsya, ang bayan ng San Jose de Buenavista, at mahigit 122 kilometro naman mula sa Iloilo City (Iloilo).

Sinasabing ang paggawa ng nasabing istruktura ay nagsimula noong taong 1860 kung saan pinangunahan ito ni Fr. Manuel Asensio at natapos sa taong 1895 sa pangunguna ni Fr. Eustaqiou Heria, samantalang sa pamamahala o pangangasiwa ni Fr. Joaquin Fernandez ay nagkaroon ng pagbabago sa pamamagitan ng pagdagdag ng “patio”. Inilipat naman ang pamamahala ng parokya sa Mill Hill Fathers ng Inglatera sa taong 1906. Ito ay isinaayos dahil sa matinding sira na dulot ng Himagsikang Filipino, taong 1896-1899 at noong ikalawang digmaang pandaigdig, taong 1941-1945.

Saksi ang bawat taong dumadaan dito sa hiwaga at gandang taglay ng lumang kumbento. Sa ngayon, dito na nakahimlay ang St. Augustine’s Academy of Patnongon Inc., kung saan una itong inilagak taong 1962. Ang bawat pisikal na biak na makikita sa pader ng kumbento ay sumisimbolo sa mga makabuluhang pangyayaring naganap sa lugar. Ang mga halamang tumutubo sa mga butas at bintana ay nagpapaalala lamang sa pag-asang dala ng lugar sa bayan maging sa mga mamamayan.

Sa di kalayuan naman ay makikita ang isang lumang municipal hall. Mayroon itong sukat na 15 m by 21 m, walang bubong at binakuran na lamang. Gaya ng lumang kumbento, ang mga pader nito ay kulay berde at abo dahil matagal na rin itong ipinatayo. Ilan rin sa mga saklaw kung bakit unti-unting nasisira ang pader ng lumang munisipyo ay ang pabago-bagong panahon at maging ang nakatayong puno ng balete rito.

Noong ika-22 ng Pebrero taong 2014 ay napabilang ang lumang simbahan at kumbento ng Patnongon sa mga lugar na pinuntahan at binisita ni Benjamin “Benjie” Layug , isang traveler, freelance travel writer at naging contributor rin ng mga travel articles sa Travel Update, Philippine Daily Inquirer, COLORS, TODAY, 7107 Islands Magazine, Business Day, Bluprint at Business Mirror. Sa kaniyang blog na BLAST, Benjie Layug: Adventures of a Savy Traveler, ay makikita at mababasa ang pag-feature nito sa lugar.

Totoo ngang hitik sa pamana at kultura ang probinsya ng Antique. Maliban sa mga natural at magagandang tanawin gaya ng mga kabundukan, dagat, talon at iba pa, syempre hindi rin tayo mauubusan ng mga pamanang ipinagkaloob sa atin ng kasaysayan ma pa lumang gusali man, kumbento,simbahan at monumento.

Talagang malaki ang papel na ginagampanan ng mga pamanang iniwan ng nakaraan dahil sa mga ito ay mas nabigyang-linaw ang kahalagahan at importansyang dala nila para sa kasalukuyan.

Isa lamang ang lumang kumbento at simbahan ng Patnongon sa mga pamanang ipinagkaloob sa atin. Hindi matutumbasan ng ano mang pilak o tanso ang mga magagandang alaalang ikinintal nito sa isip at sa puso ng mga tao. Tunay ngang ito’y isang pamanang hindi nakalimutan.
