Currently integrating Payment Gateway for a startup business in the Philippines (still in the development phase).

On Paper, Maya seems like the best choice out there for a payment gateway:
• Security seems reliable.
• You can start using the API with a non-verified Business Account, which is great for development.
• Basic transactions like straight payments are easy to integrate.
• The developer portal includes tools to test endpoints.
• BUT: Documentation still leaves a lot to be desired.
• Recurring/Subscription payments are a nightmare to implement (still waiting on answers from Sales/Support).
• The shared API keys and webhook issue is a major
problem.
• The webhook payload isn’t isolated to just your account—it includes events for other people/companies using the same API keys. So, if another developer is testing, you’ll also get their webhook payload. 😅
• How hard is it to provide dedicated Public and Secret Keys for each user? This should be a basic security and usability feature. Right now, good luck figuring out where your payloads are actually coming from. 🤦‍♂️

for PayMongo, I didn’t dive too deep, but a few things stood out:
• Documentation is better than Maya, which is a plus.
• You’re provided with dedicated API Keys (even for non-verified accounts), so no random webhook surprises.
• However, creating a Plan, or a Subscription requires manual API calls, which is cumbersome for a development/testing phase.
• But I might still go back to this later, I can deal with manual API calls to setup the pricing tiers since I will only have to do it once.
• although the deal breaker is it only currently supports PHP currency

Xendit seemed like my last hope, but:
• You can’t use their APIs or services until your account is fully verified with all legal documents.
• While I get the need for verification, this makes development/testing impossible for startups still figuring things out.

The alternative plan? Temporarily use Stripe since I've used stripe in the past in some of my freelance gig and I'm already familiar with how it works, the Dashboard provides me a way to setup the Pricing Tier and also manage customers and subscriptions without relying on too much with the API and then incorporate in the US through Stripe Atlas before going to production.

Wala lang, nag rant lang. 😂

I usually get a lot of private messages on this page. Some are about mentoring, others ask for help with bugs or for advice on approaching tech problems. Then most of the time there are Junior and Mid-Level devs who reach out with one common theme: most are struggling with their “Amazon jungle” of code.

Devs: “I watched a tech influencer, and now I’m a fan of spaghetti code.”

Same Dev, 6 months later: “I want to quit my job. This is too stressful. We’re always behind on deliverables, the code keeps breaking, and we can’t even track down the issues. Every time we fix something, something else breaks.

Unit tests? What’s that? I don’t think we can even use those with this mess. Abstraction? Is that a new JS framework or something? 😂

Just go back to your basics, as long as you follow your OOP you will be able to minimize your problems in the future, you can even mix OOP with FP.
