We have two choices:

1. Do hard things for an easy life.

2. Do easy things for a hard life.

When you willingly choose to challenge yourself, the return on investment (ROI) in other areas of your life is incredible.

For me, it’s running. Ninety percent of the time, it’s hard for me to go on a run.

But when I crush 5 miles in the morning, I feel like everything else is easy, and I can tackle anything else that day.

Doing Hard Things Creates Momentum

Think about someone who wakes up early, gets a workout in, and does a deep work session—all before 9 a.m.

This person is much more likely to make disciplined decisions throughout the day than someone who rolls out of bed right before work. Start that new project? Yup! Pizza for lunch? Not a chance. Update the budget? Excel time, baby.

These small disciplined actions add up significantly. You start to identify as someone with discipline.

Discipline creates freedom.

Freedom leads to an easier life.

Comfort is Our Greatest Nemesis

The hardest thing to leave is our comfort zone, but it must be done in order to grow.

My bed is the comfiest place in the world at 5 a.m.—67 degrees, fan on full blast— and all I want to do is go back to sleep.

But if I did that, I’d be upset with myself the rest of the day for choosing comfort.

The same goes for that cozy job: secure and comfortable, but you know you have the potential for something greater.

You’d be upset if you stayed comfy today and didn’t take the uncomfortable route that would have led to growth and made you much more fulfilled.

Life is going to be hard, whether it’s now or later. But like everything else, the hard will compound into greater obstacles if we don’t face them now.

Let’s get after it today. Do something hard that your future self will thank you for.
