Nagtipon-tipon ang mga mag-aaral ng Laboratory High School kasama ang ilang propesyonal sa medisina sa Eriguell Hall kahapon, ika-26 ng Setyembre, upang talakayin ang mga masamang epekto ng paninigarilyo at paggamit ng v**e sa kalusugan. Pinangunahan ni Dr. Deion Pada ang talakayan na “Usapang Lung,” na naglalayong hikayatin ang mga kabataan na iwasan o itigil ang mga bisyong ito.

Ang mga propesyonal na bumisita sa LHS ay kabilang sa alumni ng paaralan: kabilang dito sina Dr. Guilvic Tirso Aspiras, isang Internist Pulmonologist; Dr. Nancy Paneda, isang Internist Diabetologist; Dr. Allysa Dacapias, isang Internal Medical Doctor; Dr. Pamela Mangabat-Pada, isang Internist Nephrologist; at Dr. Deion Pada, isang Internist Pulmonologist.

Binigyang-diin ng talakayan ang mga panganib ng paninigarilyo at paggamit ng v**e. Nabanggit ang Vaping-associated lung injury (VALI), Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), at kanser sa baga bilang ilan sa mga resulta kung ipagpapatuloy ang mga ganitong bisyo. Ipinahayag din nila na kahit inaakala ng ilan na mas ligtas ang v**e, maaari pa rin itong magdulot ng malubhang pinsala sa kalusugan dahil sa mga kemikal na taglay nito. Bukod dito, ipinaliwanag din ang mga panganib ng secondhand smoke o usok na nalalanghap ng mga hindi naninigarilyo, at third-hand smoke na nananatili sa mga damit at kasangkapang nagdudulot ng pangmatagalang epekto sa kalusugan kahit na hindi direktang gumagamit ng sigarilyo o v**e.

Ang “Usapang Lung” ay bahagi ng adbokasiya ng mga doktor upang magbigay ng tamang impormasyon sa mga kabataan hinggil sa negatibong epekto ng paninigarilyo at va**ng. Hinihikayat ang mga mag-aaral na iwasan ang mga ito para sa mas malusog na pamumuhay.

Maaaring tawagan ng mga nais huminto sa paninigarilyo ang numerong, 1558.

In response to an order from the Office of the Chancellor, all students of Laboratory High School conducted a clean-up drive on September 10, 2024, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

Each grade had specific assigned areas, helping to clean the school grounds by picking up litter, emptying trash bins, and ensuring that the school's lawn was free from debris. This collaborative effort resulted in a cleaner and more pleasant environment for everyone at the school.

The advisers monitored the clean-up drive to ensure that students fulfilled their responsibilities and remained engaged while also maintaining the overall cleanliness of the school.

The newly elected Student Body Organization (SBO) officers officially took oath at the College of Education's Dean's office on September 9. The Dean of the College, Dr. Nona M. Rivera administered the oath taking ceremony which was also attended by the Principal of the Laboratory High School (LHS), Prof. Jan Kenneth R. Laguardia, and the SBO Adviser, Mr. Darwin T. Piscasio.

Dhana Mharie B. Ibabao, a 12-HUMSS student and former SBO Vice-Mayor, assumed the role of SBO Mayor after topping the mayoral race last August 28.

In an early interview, Ibabao emphasized a crucial change in the SBO, “I hope that this new administration will act as one with our advisers.” She emphasized the need to strengthen the relationship between students and officers for better collaboration and an LHS where everyone helps each other achieve the same goal.

The SBO officers expressed their gratitude to the student body for trusting them. The officers also reassured that the students’ voice will be heard and that they will focus on activities that promote inclusion.

May the voice be with you—is the promise and spirit of the new leadership of the Laboratory High School. The newly elected SBO officers will oversee the LHS Student Body for A.Y. 2024-2025.

𝐎𝐏𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐎𝐍 | 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐩𝐬𝐞𝐮𝐝𝐨-𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠?

When we students think about learning and attending school, we usually think of the accustomed one hour per subject. There are concerns about the effectiveness of our education, but the 7+ hours we spend in school during weekdays brings exhaustion not only for us, but for our teachers as well. In most cases, the responsibility of doing school work doesn't end when we leave school parameters. We also sometimes spend considerable amounts of time doing school-related activities outside school, just to get through and finish the boatful of tasks and requirements.The idea of pseudo-learning can be literally interpreted as “not genuine learning”. When we get so mentally and physically tired from being at school and having to repeat the same cycle the next day, are we really learning?

Educators also experience what I call “pseudo-teaching”. The new Education Secretary Sonny Angara has pushed through on the strict implementation of the 6-hour teachers workday (DepEd Order No.005, s.2024) as mandated under Republic Act 4670 or the Magna Carta of Public School Teachers despite concerns of teaching workload under the new MATATAG curriculum. Teachers' Dignity Coalition (TDC) chairperson Benjo Basas expressed worries on work overload, expressing: “Yung worries namin dito sa DepEd Order 5 kung saan sinasabi na dapat required ‘yung teachers natin na anim na oras na magturo, actual classroom teaching, una, sagad po ito. Nakakapagod ito…at dahil sa MATATAG curriculum, dumami pa ‘yung hawak na sections lalong mas mabigat.”

The problem arises on whether the six hours required to teach (another two hours for administrative work) will yield learning if educators are also overworked and often forced to take subjects outside their expertise just to meet required service. Teachers work harder just to be able to have a lesson prepared to teach, and if we impose a strict rule that they must teach for six hours a day, then the time required to have those lessons prepared will extend beyond that two hour allotment, and let’s not even leave the fact that they need to do a lot of non-teaching work in addition to their teaching responsibilities. A solution to this problem would be specialization. But this requires funds which lays on the hands of our government. We have capable teachers graduating every year, and the problem of workload can be solved by specialized teachers with few responsibilities, and that hopefully yields better education and less pseudo-work for teachers.

I suppose that the solution to learning is not spending hours doing school work, the stress experienced by fellow students like me only fosters bad learning—not actual learning. We spend hours on end to do our tasks and to study, just for our learning to disappear due to the stress and worries we need to face. But there is a danger in lessening the school hours without considerably making it more effective first. As one of my teachers said: “Mayroon tayong sari-sariling buhay sa labas ng school, so hindi ko na kayo pahihirapan.” We should therefore do the same to them.

Pseudo-teaching and learning may sound like a buzzword—and in a sense, it probably is; but genuine and effective teaching and learning requires some unconventional ideas to help it improve. Real learning is the lifelong pursuit of knowledge and the best way to continue the passion of learning for everyone is by acknowledging the fact that the hours we put into “studying” doesn’t necessarily mean value. Genuine learning values a good and healthy environment and conventional education still has a long way to go in improving for the better. Do you think the same?

Yesterday, 28th of August, 2024, the Student Body Organization (SBO) candidates from the Build, Influence, Nurture, Inform (BINI) and Youth Uprising for Leadership and Opportunities (YULO) party-list, vied for their respective SBO positions for A.Y. 2024-2025 at the Laboratory High School (LHS) building.

During the grand rally, the B.I.N.I. party-list emphasized its will to: build a student-friendly environment, influence students to be a better version of themselves, nurture every student's talent and capabilities, and inform everyone about the dos and don'ts that will keep the LHS community healthy.

The Y.U.L.O. party-list on the other hand assured the students will be heard, recognized, and represented. The Y.U.L.O party-list expressed its vision of giving students the opportunity to be active in leadership roles and school contests.

At two in the afternoon, the SBO election finally commenced and successfully finished within the hour. Thanks to the teachers, COMELEC members, and students who helped, order and fairness was maintained throughout the grand rally, election, and tallying of scores.

Each and every one of the SBO candidates is a student who ran because of his/her passion to lead. May the future officers continue to uphold the values and aspirations they’ve shared during the grand rally and will wholeheartedly serve the LHS.

Ika-27 ng Agosto, araw ng Martes, pormal nang nagsimula ang pangangampanya ng mga kandidato para sa Student Body Organization (SBO) ng DMMMSU-SLUC Laboratory High School (LHS) para sa taong panuruan 2024-2025.

Ang dalawang partidong magkatunggali para sa mga posisyon sa SBO ay ang BINI at YULO party-list. Ang bawat partido ay binigyan ng sapat na oras upang pormal na mangampanya sa buong LHS kaninang alas diyes ng umaga hanggang tanghali, at ala una ng hapon hanggang alas tres. Sa mga oras na iyon ay inilatag ng mga partido ang kani-kanilang mga plataporma na maaaring ipatupad kung sakaling manalo sila sa darating na eleksyon. Ang mga plataporma ng mga kandidato ay nakatuon sa pagpapabuti ng karanasan ng mga kapwa nila estudyante sa pamamagitan ng pagbibigay boses, pagsusulong ng mga proyekto tungo sa mas produktibong pag-aaral, at pagbibigay ng tapat na serbisyo.

Muli, ang mga kandidato ay tumatakbo hindi upang umupo sa pwesto nang walang dahilan; sa halip, ang mga kandidato ay tumatakbo dahil sa layunin nilang magbigay ng tapat na serbisyo at magandang karanasan sa bawat mag-aaral sa ating pamantasan.

𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐧𝐢: 𝐃𝐮𝐠𝐨'𝐭 𝐏𝐚𝐰𝐢𝐬 𝐀𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐮𝐡𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐧 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐒𝐚 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐚𝐬 𝐍𝐠 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐧

Bayani, sino nga ba ang unang pumapasok sa iyong isipan kapag sinabi ang anim na letrang iyan? Ano nga ba ang sukatan upang ikaw ay mahirang na isang bayani? Ito nga ba ang katapangang taglay ng isang tao? Ang kanyang angking kasipagan? O ‘di kaya’y ang kanyang natatanging pagmamahal sa ating inang bayan? Sa pagdaan ng panahon, iba’t ibang uri ng kabayanihan na ang nasaksihan ng mga Pilipino. Nariyan ang ating mga kinikilalang bayani na ipinaglaban ang kasarinlan ng ating bayan mula sa mga mananakop. Buong puso nilang ipinaglaban ang bansang Pilipinas matamo lamang ang kalayaang inasam ng bawat Pilipino. Inialay nila ang kanilang buhay para sa kalayaang ating tinatamasa. Ang nakapapasong init ng araw sa umaga at malamig na kadiliman sa gabi ay kanilang sinuong mapatalsik lamang ang mga ganid na mananakop ng ating bayan.

Ngayong araw ng mga bayani, ating gunitain ang mga sakripisyo at kadakilaang ipinamalas ng ating mga bayaning nakipaglaban upang makamit ang ating kalayaang pilit na ipinagdamot ng mga dayuhang tumapak sa ating lupain. Gamit ang pluma upang pukawin ang ating mga isip at ang mga sandatang nabahiran ng dugo at pawis upang makalaya. Hindi rin naging hadlang ang kahit anong kapansanan at edad ng ating mga bayani upang patuloy na ipaglaban ang ating kalayaan. Ang labis nilang pagkalinga sa ating bayan ang nagbigay sa kanila ng inspirasyon at katapangan upang pasukin ang digmaang walang kasiguraduhan makamit lamang ang pundasyon ng pagkakakilanlan ng bawat Pilipino. Maging ano man ang ginamit nila, nag-iisa lamang ang kanilang mithiin at iyon ay ang mabigyan ng magandang kinabukasan ang kanilang bansang sinilangan, ang Pilipinas.

Maraming taon na ang nagdaan mula nang nakamit ng mga Pilipino ang kalayaan at tuluyang napatalsik ang mga dayuhang mananakop, mayroon pa ring mga digmaang kinahaharap ang mga Pilipino sa kasalukuyan. Nariyan ang mga manggagawa sa iba’t ibang larangan na araw-araw nakikipagbuno sa hamon ng buhay, ang mga nasa larangan ng medisina na buong pusong ginagampanan ang kanilang sinumpaang propesyon upang iligtas ang buhay ng mga may sakit at nangangailangan. Nariyan rin ang ating mga g**o, ang mga bayaning inilalaan ang karamihan sa kanilang oras upang maibigay ang karunungang pang-akademikal sa bawat nangangarap na mag-aaral. Ganon din ang iba pang manggagawa, katulad ng mga kababayan nating nakikipagsapalaran sa ibang bansa, ang mga boluntaryong nag-aangat sa mga komunidad, at ang mga nagtataguyod ng pagkakapantay-pantay at pag-unlad ng bawat Pilipino.

Ang isang kabayanihan ay hindi lamang maipamamalas sa pagsulong sa digmaan sapagkat ito rin ay masisilayan sa pang-araw-araw na pamumuhay sa kasalukuyan. Ang mga simpleng bagay na ating ginagawa sa araw-araw na may dulot na kabutihan, kasiyahan at kasaganaan sa mga taong nasa paligid natin at ang pagiging isang huwarang ehemplo na nakapagbibigay ng inspirasyon sa iba na magpursige at lumaban sa bawat hamon ng buhay. Sa isang simpleng pagtulong sa ating kapwa at komunidad ay nabibilang na rin bilang katangian ng isang bayani, kung saan isinasaalang-alang ang kapakanan ng nakararami at hindi ang sarili lamang. Maging ano man ang instrumentong hawak ng mga palad, may kakayahan ang bawat isang maging bayani sa iba’t ibang paraan sapagkat ang tangi nitong minimithi ay ang isang makatarungan at maunlad na bayan.

Sa kabila ng mga hamon at pagbabago, ang ating mga bayani ay nananatiling tanglaw ng bayan, tagapagtaguyod ng katarungan at kabutihan. Magmula sa mga bayani ng ating nakaraan na nagbuwis ng buhay para sa kalayaan ng bansa, hanggang sa mga bayani ng kasalukuyan na patuloy nagbibigay ng kanilang serbisyo at pagmamahal sa kapwa, ang diwa ng kabayanihan ay buhay at nananatiling inspirasyon sa bawat Pilipino. Para sa ating lupang tinubuan, hinahangad ng lahat ay katarungan, kalayaan, at kaunlaran, taas noo at taos-puso natin itong ipaglalaban, nawa’y tayo ay patuloy na magka-isa at mag-alay ng sarili para sa ikauunlad at ikabubuti ng ating inang bayan.

On August 15—six days before the Ninoy Aquino Day, Malacañang announced that it will be moved from August 21 to August 23, 2024. It was stated that it is for the convenience of having a long weekend intended in "boosting local tourism." Albay Representative Edcel Lagman, a legislator, cited Republic Act 9492 or "An Act Rationalizing the Celebration of National Holidays" which states that for a movable holiday to be moved, the President shall issue a proclamation, at least six months prior to the holiday concerned. “The change of date in Ninoy Aquino’s death celebration this year is obviously in violation of the law as it should have been proclaimed by the President six months ago,” Lagman remarked.

Its sudden change might have been a blessing to some as it extends the weekend to four days. However, to move this historically important holiday and use it to "boost local tourism" as a reason is not a right way to boost economics or any reason thereof. As Lagman stated, Aquino's death must be commemorated on the day he was assassinated, which is August 21, 1983—where it paved a bloodless revolution that ousted the former president Marcos Sr.. “No holiday economics or domestic tourism boost can hold a candle to Ninoy’s heroism,” Lagman said. “It seems having an extended vacation is more important for Marcos [the current president Ferdinand Marcos Jr.] than commemorating an important event in the country’s history,” he stressed.

Aquino's assassination left a toll on the hearts of many during 1983. However, as time goes on, many have forgotten the holiday's significance. They have forgotten why the holiday was made in the first place—to commemorate his passing and the revolution that followed ahead. “Moving a day of commemoration will not diminish the fact that Ninoy died fighting for the country and the people he so loved and his death sparked a revolution that ended Marcos Sr.’s authoritarian rule,” the Aquino family stated. But for the rest of the people and the history forward, this move will have its effects on the remembrance and significance of this date. One day, if changes like this are continued to be tolerated, the reason for economics will surely be used for the worse.

As time goes on, instances like these would soon occur more frequently. Obstructing the sacrifices that holidays commemorate, even if it is for the sake of local tourism, should not be tolerated—if not, holidays like the Ninoy Aquino Day will soon be left to erase the past.

This year, President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. moved the special non-working holiday to August 23, but despite the sudden change, we continue to commemorate his sacrifice and the enduring legacy of freedom he left behind.

As skull-crushing punches vibrated throughout the stadium, the 29-year-old Filipina boxer, Aira Villegas, bagged the first bronze medal for the Philippines in the 50 kg boxing category at the 2024 Paris Olympics last August 7, 2024.

Villegas’s electrifying performance reached a dramatic climax when she used a thunderous punch in the final seconds of the match to secure a spot on the podium.

Villegas turned the ring into a battlefield in the second round, her opponent, crumbling under the intensity of her assault. Villegas’s opponent, Türkiye’s Buse Naz Cakiroglu, was stunned with a brilliant knockout momentarily, dramatically shifting the momentum. Her powerful punches further boosted her confidence, making her jabs, hooks and uppercut be deadly. Despite her bold effort, she came up just short against the seasoned Tokyo 2020 silver medalist. But even in defeat, Villegas's tenacity shined bright. Proving that she is indeed a fighter who will rise again, stronger, and ready to conquer the next games.

Throughout the tournament, Villegas bulldozed through a lineup of incredible competitors, demonstrating not only raw power but also exceptional skills and tactical sharpness. Her path to the bronze medal was marked by nail-biting rounds, each fight showing off her dedication and resilience. The pinnacle of her final match was nothing short of a spectacle, with Villegas delivering a jaw-dropping, bone-crushing jab in the closing seconds that left spectators on the edge of their seats.

Amidst a thrilling contrast among grace and precision, 24-year-old Filipino gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo etched a powerful moment into history as he sealed the first gymnastics Olympic gold medal ever for the Philippines in the men’s floor exercise, breaking in through a once dim, empty hole now at long last seized with the everlasting pride of proud Filipinos in the 2024 Paris Olympics last Saturday, August 3.

Yulo, bathed in each plunging drop of confidence within the big, bright spotlight, carried out a breathtaking series of flips and turns in his artistic routine. Bringing the competition to an awaited end, Carlos landed a bold final blow in the performance with a double front blended in with the spice of a dramatic twist that scored him terrific 15.000 points, leaving everyone blissful of the awe that Carlos pridefully embedded in the world of gymnastics in one tender moment.

In a fleeting glimpse of Carlos admirably raising two fists of victory seconds after conquering the mighty fight, the sheer joy on his face easily spoke thousands of ineffable endeavors on the athlete’s path to prosperity. Each tiring obstacle and every fazed setback that once attempted to fog his view of success had not only fed Yulo’s hunger to win but also became his own title of testament, reminding him of the unwavering resilience he continues to nourish with every hard-fought strike to be on top of his sport.

“I’m really grateful that I did not give up despite the challenges. I’m here; I showed up, and I got good results,” said Yulo.

As Yulo stands profoundly and enthusiastically on the podium of success, along with the earned golden token of him embodying passion, determination, and hard work, his transcending essence of perseverance is and will forever be, without doubt, remembered uniquely as something so significant that no one until Carlos Yulo has never, ever done before.

This morning, the students, parents/guardians, faculty members, and staff of DMMMSU-SLUC Laboratory High School (LHS) took an active role in making the LHS Brigada Eskwela 2024 a success. The aforementioned volunteers engaged in various activities such as repairing broken door k***s, and cleaning the interior and exterior areas of the LHS building.

The kick-off program with the theme "Bayanihan Para Sa Matatag na Paaralan" fosters cleanliness and camaraderie among the participants, while still ensuring a secured and clean classrooms for both returnees and new students in the opening of classes on August 5, 2024.
