The betelnut trade in our local communities is a big business. Betelnut, a mild indigenous stimulant, is considered "a green gold of the grassroots." Betelnut trade in the highlands has become the most visible manifestation of a flourishing informal economy. In betelnut market places money flows and overflows.

Market places are pervasive throughout PNG. From the large urban market places overflowing with vendors and a diversity of produce, to the small clusters of women and men selling betelnut, ci******es and other produce along the roadside, they are integral to the lives and livelihoods of ordinary people, popularly known as the grassroots.

Here in Enga, betelnut is life. Engans don't care about the health hazards this particular nut may bring. They live for it, live by it and live with it. Betelnut has become part of the Engan society.Jikanda Photography

Kapaon Cooperative Society in Maip Mulitaka, Porgera District of Enga Province.

A small cooperative society called Kapaon Cooperative Society is a voluntary group of people who join together to achieve common economic goals. It is based on the principles of self-help, mutual aid, and democratic control.

This small cooperative group is introducing tilapia farming in a community which can provide an affordable source of protein and improve the local economy.

Community fish farming is important because it can provide food, jobs, and economic growth in rural areas. It can also help to improve health outcomes and reduce malnutrition.

Benefits of community fish farming

• Food security: Fish farming provides a reliable source of protein and nutrients for local communities.

• Economic growth: Fish farming can create jobs, increase income, and improve the local economy.

• Health outcomes: Fish farming can help to reduce malnutrition and improve health outcomes.

• Environmental protection: Sustainable fish farming practices can help to protect biodiversity.

• Trade: Fish farming can contribute to foreign trade balance.

• Education opportunities: Fish farming can provide better education opportunities for local communities.

Here we can see (pictures inset) a group of family and youths involved in this Tilapia farming project. It creates job employment for youths, primary and high/scondary school students. The money they received from this is used to finance their school fee needs, their school stationaries, and other basic necessities.

Papua New Guinea (PNG) has several projects to improve fish farming practices, including the development of new technologies, training networks, and access to resources. These projects aim to increase food security, improve livelihoods, and support both community-based and commercial fish farmers. One of these projects is Improving peri-urban and remote inland fish farming.

There is no role in life that is more essential than that of motherhood. To the world, you are a mother, but to your family, you are the world. If your mother is still alive today, treat her well, be respectful to her, stay more closer and have more time with her, take care of her until her last breath because she is the world.

For me, today, I deeply regret because I didn't have enough time with my mother before she passed away some 11 years ago. I wish I had more time with her. I feel like I missed out on so much. There were so many things I wanted to tell her. I would have cherished every moment more. I just wanted a little more time. The time we had together felt too short. Jikanda Photography

Once upon a time, when I was a kid, I used to help my parents like this by helping them out in breaking firewood for cooking. Sometimes, I would help them carry loads, and other times, I would go hunting or fishing. I was a hardworking fellow in my childhood years. I used to work very hard to please my parents, and in return, I received praise, and this was a blessing for me.

Here are brave warriors of Mulitaka who were prepared to give a helping hand to their parents. They knew what's important and beneficial rather than hanging out aimlessly like other young Engan kids.

They knew, of course, it's time to return back to school. They had to give their last shot in helping their parents before going back to school as holiday is already over now.
