AKEM BRINGS PEACE TO SURINKI TRIBAL CONFLICT

By Mortimer Yangharry, in Wabag, Enga Province

A tribal land dispute that turned into a full blown tribal fight was prevented from spreading along the electoral borders of the Wabag and Lagaip Districts in Enga Province this afternoon.

Lagaip Open MP Aimos Akem arrived at the battlefield Friday afternoon ( 12 April 2024) after the first day of actual gun battle purposely to be on the ground to talk to both factions to lay down their arms and make peace once and for all.

A community land dispute arose earlier this week between the Irale clan of the Sakalin Tribe and the nearby Kowan clan of the Kunalin Tribe that live in and around the Surinki government station along the Highlands Highway leading into Laiagam and Pogera but was amicably solved this afternoon.

The land dispute arose when an Irale clanman attacked a Kowan clansmen over a land dispute which saw the Irale burning down Kowan's village ealier this week. The Irales retaliated and burnt down houses and properties worth approximately a million kina the next day.

The conflict escalated resulting in 4 deaths with two killed on both sides.

"Attending to the tribal fight at Sirunki today was my biggest concern. I am satisfied because the people respected the rule of law and laid down their arms," Akem said.

He sincerely acknowledged the Sakalin and the Kunalin tribes in coming together to make peace in the presence of security forces, law and order officials and the people of the greater Surinki constituency.

Akem issued Preventive Orders to both factions with the assistance of police and PNGDF personnels witnessed by law and order officials and the people from the greater Surinki constituency.

Both tribes hosts important government services in Tambitanis Health Centre, Surinki Police Station, Surinki Lutheran Secondary School, Surinki Primary School and the iconic tourism hotspot Yaskom Resort Hotel among several local churches and cooperative societies

"No more fight in the forsaken Lagaip Valley for we will build Lagaip again," he declared.

The pioneer MP assured the people of the Surinki constituency that he will fairly distribute developmental projects and services throughout the district without political favor.

He made special mention of the people's behavior in respecting existing government services in the area both knowing that if they fight each other they will destroy the basic government services that have been faithfully serving them and will continue to serve the generations to come.

Akem highlighted his intention of bringing in additional government services and developmental services into the Surinki area as the people respect available services encouraging the government to establish impact projects in areas where peace is promoted regardless of any circumstances whatsoever.

He further acknowledged the assistance of the local leaders emphasizing sincere gratitude to the security forces for their efforts in managing law and order issues not only in the Lagaip District but throughout the province as a whole.

This is the fourth tribal conflict that the local MP has physically stepped in and mediated for lasting peace in less than six months in office.

The Surinki government station is part of the Surinki constituency in the Lagaip Open Electorate that shares electoral boundary with the nearby Wabag District.
People living here participate in both districts during national and local level government elections.

****Enga Province: A Beacon of Excellence and Hospitality in Papua New Guinea**

Enga Province has long been a shining example of educational excellence, community cohesion, and effective governance within Papua New Guinea. Recent achievements in the realm of education have further solidified Enga's reputation as a province of innovation, resilience, and dedication to progress.

During the recent admission ceremony at the Legal Training Institute (LTI), approximately 93 graduates were formally welcomed into the legal profession. Among these graduates, Enga Province emerged as a frontrunner with an impressive tally of 21 successful candidates. This accomplishment is not an isolated incident but rather a continuation of a longstanding tradition of academic excellence that has characterized Enga's educational landscape for the past two decades.

Similarly, at the Papua New Guinea University of Technology's recent graduation ceremonies, Enga Province once again distinguished itself by producing the highest number of graduates. As the upcoming University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) graduation ceremonies approach, all indications point to Enga maintaining its impressive track record of academic achievement.

However, despite these noteworthy accomplishments, Enga's successes are often overshadowed by unfounded stereotypes and misconceptions propagated by individuals from other provinces. Such misrepresentations paint Engans as being of dubious character and having attitude problems, claims that are not only baseless but also detrimental to fostering unity and mutual respect among Papua New Guinea's diverse communities.

Contrary to these negative portrayals, Enga Province is a haven of safety and hospitality. Wabag town stands as a testament to this, being widely recognized as one of the safest towns in Papua New Guinea. Residents, particularly women, enjoy the freedom to navigate the town's streets even during nighttime, a privilege not commonly found in many urban centers

Congratulations, Hon. William Bando, Minister for Coffee and Member for KLK. Great initiative to invite the CEO of CPL, Mr Navin Raju, to Hela Province. After suffering massive losses during black ⚫️ Wednesday, CPL is showing its resilience and confidence as PNG's pharmaceutical and Wholesale/Retailing company to pursue its business opportunities in Hela Province and faith in PNG's economy as whole. Time to partner with credible companies like CPL and re-invest Hela's LNG money in Hela. We need to build sustainable opportunities in Hela to create an economic base for the province to survive and sustain beyond the revenue from oil & gas... Thank you, Mr Raju and Hon. Bando for this great initiative. CPL needs to be given the credit where it's due

Can someone forward this to my member for Tari Pori and Prime Minister Hon. James MARAPE for I don’t access to him. May be screenshot this to Chief of Staff Andy Hetra so he can forward to PM because he is from this place.

This road is a feeder road that connects from Piribu or Dauli to Hambuali and onto Mindira Togo of Tari KOMO Highway. This road was built by Colonial Administration but James MARAPE has totally ignored this road since he became the member for Tari Pori in 2002. Not to mention other basic services like Schools, Aid Posts, etc he ignored.

I am now calling for Prime Minister and Member for Tari Pori to deliver this road for they are your die hearts who voted you for nothing but leadership yet you have failed them miserably even when you became the Prime Minister until now.

No Tari or HELA is speaking up, if we do like this PNG will discover Hell is in HELA! I am ready for the job!

HELA STUDENTS APPEAL FOR SUPPORT TOWARDS AWARENESS PROGRAM

The Hela Students at the Divine Word University in Madang Campus appeal for public support towards awareness program in the Province.

As expressed by DWU Hela Students Association Executives . The awareness will be aim to raise development at the community, district, and provincial level, its important not to rely solely on the efforts of political figures such as MPs, Governors or Prime Minister.

Each one of us bears a responsibility to contribute to the advancement of our society.
One impactful way to uplift our society is via the empowerment of tertiary students to inspire and mentor lower and upper students. By sharing the significance of education and offering guidance on avenues for advancement such as alternative pathways after grades 10 and 12, we can teach hope and motivation to the younger generation.

Moreover, public servants play a vital role in ensuring fairness, justice and neutral service delivery to the entire population without yielding to favoritism. By upholding Christian principles and obeying ethical conduct, including the responsible use of public funds, public servants can earn the trust of the community and fulfill their duty to serve with integrity and accountability.

Back to my point, our initiative aims to address three key pillars of development within our province and foster to positive change among our communities:

1. We aim to inspire and encourage upper and lower secondary students to pursue higher education particularly at Divine Word University. By highlighting the benefits of tertiary education and sharing personal experiences we hope to burn a passion for learning
2. We believe in the importance of teaching ethical principles and values in our youth. Through our program, we seek to encourage young people to actively participate in church activities and embrace a life of integrity and services to others
3. Recognising the impact of criminal activities on our communities we aim to educate young people about the consequence of engaging in harmful behavior and importance of maintaining peace without our society.
We plan to conduct this program during the first week of the first semester break in the province from June 5 to 17 2024.
We are reaching out to our fellow students, Hela public servants, church members, peacemakers, law enforcement agencies, elected members and the entire community to request your support whether in cash or in kind.

For further information contact this via WhatsApp 71076849 or email. [email protected]

Your generous contributions will enable us to effectively organize this awareness program benefiting not only the DWU Hela student but the entire Hela community and create a brighter future for the province.

Please forward this message to other public forums.

Thank you for considering our request and look forward to your participation.

Warm regards

Rickson Urubu
2024 DWU Hela Student Association President

21 ENGAN LAWYERS ADMITTED TO THE BAR

A total of 126 Legal Training Institute (LTI) trainee lawyers were admitted to the Bar at the Waigani National Court yesterday.

This means that they have met all the legal requirements to practice law as certified lawyers.
Out of the 126 lawyers, 21 are from Enga Province indicating the positive outcome of the power of education changing the lives of Engan generations amidst the negativity tribal fighting has caused in certain parts of the province.
Tribal fighting is not prevalent nor dominant but takes place in certain parts of the province randomly.
Enga Province will continue to produce tangible results under the political leadership of veteran Enga Provincial Member Sir Peter Ipatas and administrative guidance of Provincial Admistrator Sandis Tsaka.

Enga Province is not just talking. The province is producing results that has been, is and will be positively contributing towards the development of Papua New Guinea in areas concerned accordingly.

*Cash flow crises is no joke*

We support the government for whatever reasons that make us sleep well at night but the country's cash flow situation is a nightmare haunting the Marape government and the country.

This is a test solely on Prime Minister James Marape's competence in financial acumen and management savvy. PM Marape has been on the job for straight 5 years unimpeded however there is no foreseeable explanation to the prolonged shortage in foreign currency.

It all boils down to the unpopular decisions like shutting down Pogera gold mine at the peak of good returns in high gold prices at the time. Perhaps it would have been prudent to negotiate the New Pogera terms while the mine was still running.and cash flow steadily coming in.

Had Papua LNG wasn't protracted and proceed on schedule as per the agreed terms this second gas project would have brought in additional revenue complimenting the PNG LNG. There would never be foreign currency shortfalls was unnecessarily delayed for some meagre gain that means nothing when the protracted. systems were

Then there is the unnecessary delay in Wafi-Golpu and all high impact projects who were at the time on all systems go.

Again there is always the argument of Marape was negotiating better terms and more equity but that hardly pushed the envelope and we are still making circles. And finally the straw that broke the camel's back is the zero foreign direct investment in the Marape years.

Zero. Not one new foreign company came to Papua New Guinea and opened up shop. Instead the scenerio is the direct opposite. Companies are closing shop and taking business elsewhere.

90 companies on the verge of liquidition as this news headline is screaming is the consequence of cash flow shortage from the aforementioned poor decisions. In other words the cash flow crises is Marape's making and him alone.

IMPORTANCE OF MEDIA ON SERVICE DELIVERY

The role of media on the delivery of services is important as it keeps the people informed of the changes that take place and how well and prudent the public funds are managed.

Not all people live back in their villages. In certain places, close to half the population migrate go towns and cities due to various reasons. In place where services are hardly reached, kids move out to look for education and find job in towns as they finish. So it is media which connects them and their people in whatever that takes place.

Every Government's priority is in service delivery and whether it's delivered or not, it is the media that ensures people to prejudice over performance.

Example would be Marape Government's lack of media exposure to all Connect PNG programs. People need to know how many new roads being built, how far each is covered, and progress that occurs daily. The workers including operators, locals, and contractors need to be interviewed of the real situations being faced on a weekly basis. Without such, how could the larger populace know where the money is being used? That is when noise is created and people preempt the opposite instead.

Media is therefore an important tool to disseminate information and keep account of every services delivered. It helps people to trust a government that deliveres.
