Minister for Information and Communication Technology, Timothy Masiu says the Provincial Government has given over a million Kina to support the operations of local radio station, NBC West New Britain since signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the National broadcaster some years ago.

Mr Masiu made these comments when receiving a K300,000 cheque from West New Britain Governor, Sasindran Muthuvel in Port Moresby on Friday.

The K300,000 is for office equipment and renovation works on NBC West New Britain staff houses.

Minister Masiu says the NBC is the national broadcaster and has played a vital role in the development of the country and it is only proper that Provincial governments support the Provincial radio stations.

He admitted that although the NBC is a far cry from its former glory days especially in terms of coverage, it needs the support of all stakeholders in order to deliver on its mandate of informing, educating and entertaining the public.

Minister Masiu called on the NBC Management to ensure that the funds are used for the intended purposes.

He says under his tenure, he has instituted reforms in the NBC adding that one of these changes is the Analog to Digital transformation project which will soon get off the ground.

Meanwhile, Governor Muthuvel commended the National Broadcasting Corporation for its efforts in modernising its broadcasting services.

He says as the national broadcaster, it is encouraging to see that the NBC is evolving from radio and using other platforms like television and online mediums to deliver on its mandate.

Mr Muthuvel explained that this is why the Provincial Government continues to support the NBC's operations in the province.

He also commended the NBC Board and its chairman, Ian Tarutia.

He says Mr Tarutia brings with him a wealth of experience and confidence to the board especially as the organisation continues in its endeavours to modernise broadcasting services.

Mr Muthuvel also used the opportunity to highlight that more prominence should be given to positive development stories in the country rather than the current trend where most media organisations focus on negative news.

Mr Kumai says he has forgiven the women and commended the women of Kilu for taking the initiative to reconcile with him.

He says women leaders and groups need to understand that he is the mandated leader of the District and whatever services and programs he administers are for everyone to benefit from and not for few people with vested interests.
