PNGRFL Media Release: PNG NRLC Confirms Clubs for 2025 Season

The Papua New Guinea National Rugby League Competition (PNG NRLC) has officially announced that the 12 existing teams will compete in the 2025 Digicel ExxonMobil Cup. The highly anticipated season is scheduled to kick off in April next year.

Following the success of the 2024 season, the PNG NRLC board undertook a detailed review of the competition, its clubs, and future expansion plans. After thorough evaluation, the board decided to maintain the 12-team format for 2025.

Chairman of the PNG NRLC, Adrian Chow, emphasized the complexity of decisions regarding expansion. “As a responsible board, some decisions are not always popular, but we are entrusted to have the best interest of the game at the forefront of all our decision-making,” Mr. Chow stated.

He highlighted that the PNGRFL Pathways and Performance Department conducted a rigorous audit of current clubs' performances on and off the field. This included detailed assessments of all submissions from aspiring clubs. While expansion remains a long-term goal, the board determined that 2025 is not the right time to increase the number of teams.

“We thank the Morobe Kandes and Simbu Warriors for their strong submissions and will continue to work closely with them to prepare for a successful entry into the competition in the future,” Chow added.

All clubs were evaluated based on their governance and administration structures, financial sustainability, facilities, development and pathways programs, and strategic planning.

Tony Archer, the General Manager of Pathways and Performance, commended the collaborative efforts behind confirming the 12-team competition. “Our focus is to support our clubs in becoming strong, sustainable pathways for players, coaches, and support staff. Most importantly, it gives the best opportunity for our fans to enjoy a better competition in 2025,” Archer said.

He reassured the Morobe Kandes and Simbu Warriors of continued support, outlining specific areas for improvement to ensure their readiness for future inclusion.

With the preseason set to begin in the coming weeks, the PNG NRLC is optimistic about elevating the competition's standards. The league aims to foster stronger clubs and enhance pathways for players while ensuring fans experience an exciting season.

The full draw for the 2025 Digicel ExxonMobil Cup will be released before Christmas, setting the stage for another thrilling chapter in Papua New Guinea’s rugby league journey.

Pilai Piksa Supports City Wardens in Gordon’s: A Gesture of Appreciation for a Safer Port Moresby

Port Moresby, PNG — In a heartfelt show of gratitude, We the Pilai Piksa team have extend our support to the city wardens stationed at Gordon’s bus stop, providing them with water and juice to help them stay hydrated as they carry out their vital duties. This small but meaningful gesture highlights our commitment to fostering a safer and cleaner community.

The city wardens program, an initiative championed by NCD Governor Hon. Powes Parkop, plays a crucial role in ensuring public safety in Port Moresby. With Gordon’s bus stop being one of the city’s busiest and most challenging areas, rife with petty crimes, the presence of the wardens has become indispensable. These dedicated individuals manage traffic, maintain order, and uphold cleanliness, creating a safer environment for men, women, and children alike.

The wardens, comprised of youths from the surrounding communities of 5 Mile, Gordon’s, and Erima, embody a spirit of unity and service. By engaging these young people, the program not only addresses safety concerns but also provides an opportunity for them to take pride in contributing to the betterment of their city.

Recognizing the wardens' hard work, our gesture aims to motivate and encourage these young leaders. “Their efforts are making a real difference in ensuring Gordon’s is a safe space for everyone,” said a spokesperson from Pilai Piksa. “Providing water and juice is a small token of appreciation for the big impact they are making.”

The ongoing partnership between local initiatives and civic organizations is a testament to the collective power of communities working together for positive change. We encourages other groups and individuals to find ways to contribute to the city wardens' efforts, reinforcing a shared commitment to a safer, cleaner Port Moresby.

Port Moresby Takes a Stand Against Rising Crime: Launch of the City Warden Initiative

Port Moresby, November 25, 2024

Amid escalating law and order concerns, the National Capital District Commission (NCDC) has launched the City Warden Initiative to address safety and security issues in the nation's capital. NCD Governor Hon. Powes Parkop, during the launch at City Hall, emphasized that this initiative marks a significant step in restoring public safety and ensuring the freedom of movement for all residents.

Governor Parkop acknowledged the mounting challenges posed by rising crime, particularly in vulnerable transit points such as bus stops and other public spaces. Recognizing the strain on local law enforcement—currently understaffed with fewer than 900 officers for over one million residents—the NCDC has stepped in to bolster security efforts.

The City Warden Initiative is a collaborative effort involving the NCDC, police, Road Traffic Authority (RTA), and local communities. The program seeks to reclaim public spaces and restore respect for the rule of law, with a visible presence in crime hotspots. Governor Parkop declared, "Safety and security are our priorities. With collective efforts, we can make Port Moresby a safer city for everyone."

In its first phase, the initiative will deploy 150 trained youth wardens to Boroko and Gordons, areas identified as security hotspots. These wardens underwent intensive training, including life skills, crisis management, health and hygiene, and adherence to professional ethics. Training was conducted by current and former Papua New Guinea Defence Force personnel, equipping the youth with the necessary skills to perform their duties with confidence.

Roles and Responsibilities
The wardens’ duties include:
- Maintaining a visible presence in public spaces.
- Monitoring and regulating public activities.
- Discouraging illegal vending and unethical behavior.
- Providing security for women, girls, and other vulnerable individuals.

Wardens will also act as the "eyes and ears" of law enforcement, enabling a more coordinated approach to maintaining public safety. Logistics support, such as vehicles and fuel, will be provided by the NCDC to ensure the program's success.

Governor Parkop highlighted the program’s broader vision of transforming the lives of young participants. After three months of deployment and ongoing training, some wardens will be recommended for positions as regular or reserve police officers, public safety officers, or participants in NCDC programs such as the Labour Mobility Program and Urban Youth Employment Project (UYEP).

In his passionate address, Governor Parkop urged citizens, stakeholders, and government leaders to join forces in reclaiming the city from the grips of crime. "This is our city and our country. Let us all rise for Port Moresby. We will not lose our city to thugs and criminals. Together, we can create a peaceful and livable environment for all."

As the initiative unfolds, the City Warden Program stands as a testament to the collective resolve to make Port Moresby a beacon of hope and a symbol of national pride.

For residents, this initiative represents a hopeful turning point in the fight against lawlessness. Governor Parkop’s commitment to safety is a call to action for all to contribute towards a safer, more secure Port Moresby.

Wewak Pythons Rugby League Club: A Story of Dedication, Community, and Aspiration

Since the inception of the Agmark Sepik Rugby League 9s Tournament, the Wewak Pythons Rugby League Club, based in Wewak, East Sepik Province, has been a consistent participant. Driven by a deep love for the game and a commitment to empowering local youth, the team has become a beacon of hope and pride for Wewak. At the helm of this initiative are team president Meldon B**g and team manager Mrs. Mchlyn, both of whom have selflessly supported the club, funding it from their own pockets to provide young athletes with opportunities they would otherwise not have.

Without formal sponsorship, Meldon and Mrs. Mchlyn’s commitment has been essential in ensuring that Wewak's youth have a platform to showcase their skills and compete against teams from other provinces. Their dedication is evident not only in their financial support but also in their efforts to foster growth and confidence within the team. This year, the club managed to bring in five players from other areas to play alongside the local Wewak boys. This integration of experienced players has provided invaluable insights and motivation for the local youth, allowing them to learn from more seasoned athletes and inspiring them to reach new heights.

The journey of the Wewak Pythons in this tournament has been remarkable. Reaching the grand final was a historic achievement, making them the first team from East Sepik Province to do so. Although they did not claim victory in the final match, the team’s performance has made a lasting impact on Wewak and East Sepik Province, inspiring pride and optimism across the community.

The Wewak Pythons now look forward to the 6th Edition of the Agmark Sepik Rugby League 9s Tournament with renewed determination. However, they are in need of support to realize their full potential. As they prepare for the upcoming tournament, they are reaching out to businesses in East Sepik Province, Wewak, and beyond, as well as to East Sepik people living across Papua New Guinea and overseas, for assistance. The team is particularly in need of new jerseys, which would not only enhance their appearance on the field but also symbolize the unity and pride of Wewak.

The Pythons’ story is a powerful reminder of the potential that lies within community sports to uplift and empower. With continued support, the Wewak Pythons Rugby League Club hopes to make an even greater impact in the future, bringing pride to their community and opening doors for young athletes who dream of making their mark.
