Bosconian and Servant Leader, Mark K*mbi Jnr

“From player to Gulf Isou head coach”

FORMER Gulf Isou center Mark K*mbi is grateful for the opportunity to coach the Gulf Isou Development side in the Moresby South Rugby Football League.

K*mbi played for the Gulf franchise in the 2021 Digicel Cup season.

K*mbi's rugby league career started in 2008 when he played for Erema in the Kaugere off-season competition.

Before joining the rugby league, K*mbi played basketball for the South's Club at the old Hohola Basketball Court from 2006 to 2007.

However, he fell in love with rugby league while attending Don Bosco Technical Secondary School.

After several years in the Kaugere off-season, K*mbi played in multiple grand finals with the Gabutu Dragons.

In 2017, as the Kaugere off-season rebranded to the Moresby South Rugby Football League, K*mbi was selected for the train-and-trial squad for the Port Moresby Vipers alongside Shane Haro and Edene Gebi.

Despite a strong pre-season, he did not make the final squad and returned to play with the Gabutu Dragons.

K*mbi remained with the Gabutu Dragons until 2019, he was selected to train with Gulf Isou.

However, he was omitted from the final squad due to a season-ending injury.

After being dropped twice in pre-season train-and-trial selections, K*mbi persevered and made the Central Dabaris' 2020 Digicel Cup team.

After a year with the Dabaris, he was selected to play for his home provincial team, the Gulf Isou, where he spent a year before moving to coaching career.

K*mbi also represented the Southern Zone in the Confederate Championship and was part of the Southern Confederate team that won the first-ever Digicel Cup 9's in 2015.

He led the Moresby South Blacks to claim the Southern Confederation titles.

K*mbi also partook in several rugby league 9's tournaments throughout the country.

His coaching career started in 2023 when he led the Gabutu Dragons U20 side to claim the Minor Premier in the Moresby South Rugby Football League.

K*mbi also coached the Southern Blacks in the Southern Zone trials last year, leading the Waidex 9's team to win the Plate finals.

Furthermore, K*mbi coached the Moresby South Gulf team to win the Gulf Isou Talent Identification Program titles earlier this year.

"There are so many things that motivated me to become a coach,” he said.

“As a coach, we often focus on what motivates an athlete.

“Indeed, one of our primary roles is to help an athlete stay on track with their goals and keep their motivation high.

“I took up coaching because I see there's a lot of talent that needs to be exposed to the next level and stay away from their comfort zone.”

“In today's generation, we have a lot of talent, however, our mindset is still killing our own talent," K*mbi said.

As a coach, Mr. K*mbi has already adopted a winning culture in the clubs he coaches.

He constantly encourages and motivates his players, emphasizing the importance of balancing education and rugby league.

Even though I am no longer doing fitness, it is an honor and privilege to be recognized by some of the countries brightest minds to once again take part with established Doctors in 2024. Health is Wealth, and as a striving nation, we need our judges to keep the country going with our parliamentarians.
Always good to have friends in places like this as a young Papua New Guinean, to share and gain knowledge.
