Coral Sea Tropical Low Information: Issued at 5pm 01 February 2022 by PNG National Weather Service.

The tropical low system in the Coral Sea remains within the responsible area of the Brisbane Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre, Bureau of Meteorology and it has not reached Tropical Cyclone threshold yet and has not been named.

The satellite signature (images) of the system remains only marginally organised and has shown little improvement over the last 24 hours.

From the analysis based on the last 24 hours data and trend, intensity is 35 knots , with structure gales of 65km/hr with gusts to 95km/hr in northern quadrants only which will is along the papuan coastline.

The environment is only marginally favourable for the next 24 hours or so and it is possible the low may briefly reach tropical cyclone strength in that time frame. The system continues to receive moist low level monsoonal inflow, and lies in an area of diffluent upper level flow north of an upper trough to the south. However, moderate ESE deep layer wind shear coupled with dry air to the south may limit development. As a small system, it will respond more rapidly to changes in environmental conditions.

There is strong confidence in an ESE track under the influence of mid-level steering and low level monsoonal flow.

Details of Tropical Low at 04:00 pm Eastern Standard Time (EST)
Intensity: tropical low, sustained winds near the centre of 65 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 95 kilometres per hour.
Location: within 55 kilometres of 15.0 degrees South, 152.7 degrees East , 325 kilometres east northeast of Willis Island and 643 kilometres southeast of Alotau, 460km southwest of Togula Island and 488km southwest of Sarman Island.

Movement: slow moving.

The tropical low is expected to continue to move to the east southeast away from the Queensland coast and eastern Papuan coastline. Although gales may be occurring north of the low, the system is not at tropical cyclone intensity. The system will have no direct impact on the Papuan coastline or and southern Milne Bay islands.

PNG National Weather Service will continue to monitor and report any developments associated with tropical cyclone activity within its areas of responsibility for the sake of our people. The general public is urged to take heed and comply with the warnings issued by the PNG National Weather Service.
