Understanding Artist Earnings from Streaming Services

According to a TikTok video from July 2023, DistroKid pays artists approximately $3,500 for 1 million streams. However, it’s essential to recognize that artist earnings can vary significantly based on several factors:

Streaming Service Rates:

Different streaming services pay varying rates. For instance:

Spotify may pay around $4,000–$7,000 for 1 million streams.

Apple Music might pay approximately $6,750 for the same volume of streams.

Territory Impact:

The location where streams occur affects an artist’s payment. Rates can differ based on regional markets.

Subscription Type:

Whether the stream is from a free or paid subscription can impact earnings. Paid subscribers generally contribute more to artist revenue.

Ad and Subscription Revenue:

Additional revenue sources, such as ad revenue, contribute to an artist’s overall earnings.

DistroKid’s Approach:

DistroKid passes 100% of the earnings received from streaming services directly to artists, minus any applicable taxes and banking fees.

Artists may incur additional charges when withdrawing earnings through DistroKid’s payment processor, Tipalti.

Payments are made once DistroKid processes earnings from streaming services and stores.

Keep in mind that streaming services typically provide monthly reports reflecting sales from about three months prior.
For instance, if someone streamed a song yesterday, the royalties for that song may appear in the artist’s DistroKid account approximately three months later12.
