Congratulations to Ms Ailava Samuels on being crowned. This message is shared with no ill intent toward her personally, but rather as a reflection on important questions of ethics, responsibility, and accountability arising from events that unfolded prior to the MPIP.
Based on the publicly understood criteria, the MPIP crown is traditionally conferred upon a reigning national titleholder, or alternatively the first runner-up where the reigning queen is unable to assume the role. In this instance, Ms Samuels was not the reigning Miss Fiji. Dr Peggy, who expressed willingness and readiness to represent, was reportedly excluded at a time when she required support and protection. These circumstances raise legitimate concerns that deserve transparent clarification.
While celebrations are taking place, it is also important to acknowledge that unresolved processes can leave others feeling marginalised, hurt, and unheard. This is not about diminishing one woman’s achievement, but about ensuring fairness to all contestants who earned their place through established pathways. It is about asking whether the process was equitable, ethical, and aligned with the values we claim to uphold.
These platforms speak loudly about empowerment, integrity, and role modelling. Young women and girls are watching closely. The precedent we set matters. True empowerment is not only about outcomes, but about how decisions are made, how voices are treated, and whether accountability is upheld when concerns are raised.
Issues such as these should be addressed openly and responsibly, not avoided or obscured. If we are serious about empowerment, then the very platforms that invite our daughters and young women to participate must also demonstrate fairness, transparency, and respect in practice.
I raise these points not to divide, but to encourage reflection, responsibility, and higher standards, because accountability strengthens institutions, and honesty preserves their credibility 🙏🏻
