According to PNG Education News in 2016, A SOLOMON Islands student attending the University of Papua New Guinea was kicked out of the K260 million Pacific Games Village after a picture of him drunk and asleep outside his room went viral on social media last weekend. First-year science foundation student Collin Leafasia was the first to be evicted from the Games village by the UPNG administration yesterday morning. Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof Pulapa Subba Rao told Leafasia that the Government had spent a lot of money on the Pacific Games Village and the university must safeguard that money. Subba said the Government had cautioned the university to take care of the facility when it was handed over last month. “The money (K260 million) is government’s money paid by the taxpayers so we (UPNG) have to take care of it (Games village),” Rao said. “That’s why we have given an agreement to each student. That agreement includes that we can evict them whenever we find them either drinking in the Games village or intoxicated outside and come to the Games village.” Rao said Leafasia had gone out partying at a popular nightclub in Port Moresby last Friday night before he returned and slept outside his room in the early hours of Saturday morning. A fellow student took a photo of him asleep and posted it on Facebook, which went viral hours later with many people expressing their disappointment over the incident. Leafasia wrote a statement to the university administration admitting that he was drunk when he entered the Pacific Games Village. Rao said Leafasia could continue attend classes but the incident would be reported to the student disciplinary committee to investigate.
