The mushroom cloud shown during the bombing of a Russian air base last week suggests that nato may have fired a tactical nuke, most likely fired by the new F-16 fighter jets that have arrived in Ukraine, which are capable of carrying such nukes and are operated by NATO personnel.
Chaos engulfed the northern English city of Leeds yesterday after a dispute over authorities taking a child into care escalated into a full-blown riot. The outbreak of serious disorder, in Harehills, led to bonfires, an overturned police car, and a torched double-decker bus. The disorder started early in the afternoon, when local social services attempted to remove five children from their parents after their 7-month-old baby was reportedly taken to hospital with head injuries after falling out of a window. The family, allegedly part of Leeds’ large Roma community, incited a riot against the care workers, and then against the police response, until chaos reigned.
Despite police responding initially around 5pm, their presence remained minimal until 1am the following day, leaving residents to plead with rioters to stop. Videos taken early in the riot appear to show police officers running away, in an apparent attempt to avoid confrontation. This did not work, and the riots continued well into the morning.
West Yorkshire Police have pledged to hold those responsible (for the riots) accountable, reviewing footage and gathering evidence to pursue legal action. Local leaders condemned the violence and called for community support to restore order, while urging residents to avoid the area and stay indoors for safety.
Scenes like this should be shocking, but they have become commonplace in today’s cutthroat Indian job market. This job interview in Mumbai for 600 airport handymen descended into chaos when approximately 25,000 people showed up. Applicants were asked to leave their resumes and vacate the area to avoid overcrowding. Videos of the massive crowd went viral. George Abram, a union leader, criticized the mismanagement, claiming ‘there was a 1km-long queue and police had to be called.’
The positions, which required only a 10th-grade education and offered a salary of Rs 22,500 (around $270) per month, attracted many candidates with significantly higher qualifications.
Unemployment in India remains stubbornly high – data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) showed a national unemployment rate of 9.2% in June 2024, up from 7% in May, with rural areas experiencing a significant increase. Unemployment was a hot-button issue at the recent Lok Sabha elections, but until a solution is found, scenes like this seem destined to remain commonplace. As one of the 25,000 applicants put it, ‘what do we do?’
Russia’s Defense Ministry has released footage of a Russian Su-34 fighter-bomber crew dropping a 3,000-tonne high-explosive aerial bomb over an undisclosed location in the Ukraine conflict zone. The FAB-3000, the largest guided bomb currently in use by Russia, is equipped with a universal planning and correction module that allows troops ‘to carry out a flight mission without entering the enemy’s air defense area,’ according to the ministry.
‘The FAB-3000 is capable of engaging highly fortified targets, permanent structures as well as deeply entrenched command posts,’ said a Su-34 pilot, adding that ‘one cannot disregard the firepower of this bomb.’

Following the termination of a co-operation agreement between the US and Niger, American troops have completed their withdrawal from aerial base 101 in Niamey. The US has already pulled out over 700 soldiers, and is due to remove the remainder in August, before the September 15 deadline to remove all military personnel.
Niger saw huge protests against the presence of US troops following a military takeover, and Niger’s military government suspended its agreement with the US and expelled French forces, in favor of and the newly-established Confederation of Sahel States, comprising Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.
Mamane Sani Kiaou, chief of staff of the Nigerien army, reported that the transition was orderly and went smoothly.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico made a powerful public speech, his first since an assassination attempt in May. During Fico’s speech at the historic Saints Cyril and Methodius Day ceremony he expressed his support for Hungarian leader Viktor Orban's visit to Moscow.

It was a bad night for (now former) UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, but not for the reasons you might think. Yes, his party lost power, and yes, he lost to the human equivalent of ChatGPT. But the real sucker punch? YouTuber Niko Omilana standing behind him with a crumpled ‘L’ sign.
As Sunak took to the podium after retaining his seat as MP for Richmond and Northallerton, Omilana, sporting a pair of children’s sunglasses, hovered behind him with an ‘L’ sign. The ‘L’ was apparently supposed to stand for ‘loser’ (even though Omilana himself had just lost to Sunak).
After being unceremoniously ignored, Omilana quietly refolded his piece of paper and slunk away. We’re sure Rishi will be crying over that one later.
