I wouldn't mind a bit of 'Cruising Hong Kong' on board Lady S! At 93m, this is one of Feadship's biggest builds. One of a kind features include a two-deck IMAX theatre, a fully certified helipad with Jet A fuel, four VIP suites each with 8k TVs, and facilities that cater to a wide range of sports including golf, basketball, volleyball and soccer among many others. And a helideck, of course.

HOW GOOD WAS THAT? HHYC Typhoon Series #8 was a cracker. The breeze switched on obligingly just before start time, then clocked 90 degrees (cue AP), settled down at 10-12 kts and delivered the most perfect blue skies Sunday racing experience imaginable. Sheer magic. Many thanks to organisers HHYC and to RO Barry Truhol.

YOU SHOULD BE OUT ON THE WATER!

It's June, the sun is shining, the sky is knockout blue, and someone has dusted off the fluffy white clouds. There's a breeze across the bay, and the water is refreshingly cool (must have been all that rain we had!).

So get away to the beach! If you're not sure where to go, grab a copy of Cruising Hong Kong, and head out. Remember to avoid protected areas, and don't break any speed limits - it's all in the book.

It's a weekday - you'll have the place to yourself!

Much as we love cruising Hong Kong, there's always a far horizon to be explored. This time it was in Göcek, Turkey, on the Gulf of Fethiye, at the Turkish Yachting & Brokers' Association (TYBA) annual charter show.

The show featured 54 domestic and foreign luxury yachts ranging in length from 20 to 64 meters, the largest being ‘Running on Waves’, a three masted barquentine built in 2011 and refitted in 2021. Nearly 300 charter brokers, agents, marine professionals, and media were there to view the yachts, meet with the yacht owners, the captains and crews, and learn first-hand what these beautiful and impressive yacht have to offer their charter clients.

The show also included a series of seminars on topics that included: personal data protection, the historic Bodrum Cup (a regatta for traditional craft that attracts 150-odd entries every year), chartering regulations in Turkey, and TYBA’s new charter contract that has been developed specifically for the Turkish charter operators.

Destination seminars introduced the 'Aphrodite Cruising Route’, and the history of grapes and wine in Asia Minor. Pour me another! There is also a “Let's Cook” competition that celebrated traditional cuisine, the best chef, best service, and most welcoming crew, with the winners being announced on the closing day of the show.

If you might be interested in a charter cruising holiday on the Anatolian coast, we can't recommend it too highly. Turkey has a huge amount to offer the international sailing and boating community, and Cruising Hong Kong was delighted to be able to experience first-hand the delights of the beautiful Turkish gulets and the stunning cruising grounds near Göcek!

Many thanks to Günes Aysun (TYBA President), Serhan Cengiz (TYBA Show Committee President) and Özgür Cengiz (TYBA Board Member) for the invitation to the attend the event. It is certainly a great way to connect the yachting communities of Asia, including Turkey! All these fine people are happy owners of a copy of Cruising Hong Kong, and have promised to visit us "At Home" before too long!

Cruising Hong Kong at the Royal Geographical Society Hong Kong - 13 December, 6.30, Bonham's Auction Rooms.

Guy Nowell makes an enthusiastic voyage from the remains of the pearl farm in O Pui Tong to the abandoned Vietnamese refugee camp on Tai A Chau, with stops along the way for a little history, a smattering of culture, a seasoning of geology, and a whole lot of love for the place he has called home for the last 40 years.

Mince pies and seasonal drinks before the talk, book signing afterwards. Christmas is coming - Cruising Hong Kong is the best Christmas gift purchase of 2021!

Cruising Hong Kong

Guy Nowell, Suzy Rayment and Nic Boyde are proud to present ‘Cruising Hong Kong’, a beautiful volume of photographs and plenty of informative text to remind local cruising sailors that there’s a great deal more to Hong Kong than the familiar few standard weekend destinations. From the Soko Islands in the far southwest to Double Haven away to the northeast, Hong Kong and its 365 islands present a multitude of sightseeing trips, anchorages, and overnight stops. For day-tripping junk charters, very often the first question from the Captain as they go aboard is “where do you want to go?” This book has the answers.
