I’m from Cali-Colombia🇨🇴 but was actually born in Panamá🇵🇦 I’ve been a language teacher for over 25 years (yes!) and I’m super passionate about what I do.

Did you know that:

1. Over 400 million people speak Spanish?!
Spanish is the mother tongue of an estimated 400-450 million people, making it the world’s second most spoken language.

2. Spanish has two names: Castellano and Español
Spanish speakers often refer to their language as español as well as castellano, which is the Spanish word for “Castilian.”

3. Arabic influenced Spanish
Arab armies started to conquer the Iberian Peninsula in 711, bringing Arabic art, architecture and language to the region. Arabic gradually mixed with old Spanish to become the language spoken today.
When Spain expelled the Arabs in 1492, the language retained some 8,000 Arabic words. Apart from Latin, Arabic is the largest contributor to Spanish. Many words that you already know in Spanish come from Arabic, such as el alfombra (carpet), la almendra (almond) and la almohada (pillow).
When you travel through Spain, you’ll come across many place, region and historic site names that come from Arabic, such as La Alhambra.

Issam is such an amazing person and it was such a pleasure chatting with him about his journey learning Spanish.
Issam speaks 11 languages!! so it’s safe to say he has his language intelligence quite developed!

Issam shared how he has learned Spanish by himself and how he practices a lot when he takes tourists around his beautiful country, Oman.

Issam believes Spanish is an easy language to learn, especially for Arabic speakers and explains how grammatically there are many similarities between the two languages.

Issam has never been to a Spanish speaking country, so yallah Issam, Colombia is waiting for you!!🇨🇴🇴🇲

My trip to #salalah_oman was epic, so many years in the making. I loved meeting the Jebali people of Salalah and experiencing a bit of their way of life. I felt in many ways like I had gone back to 🇨🇴 The greenery, grass-covered mountains, fog, little food stands on the side of the road, a magical hiking path and another not so magical that almost killed me😂😂, but seeing people happily walking and enjoying nature was so cool. Can’t wait to go back and learn more Jabali🇴🇲⛰️.
