Deeply saddened to hear that we have a firefighter in critical condition and one missing, unable to be located in a massive slip in Muriwai, Auckland.

My thoughts are with the critically injured and missing firefighters and their families at this time.

I have been in contact with FENZ leadership this morning and they are providing wrap around support for their whānau and colleagues of the Muriwai Volunteer Fire Brigade. FENZ will keep me updated of the dynamic situation that is occurring across the North Island. We thank all our firefighters who have over the last 24 hours responded to over 1700 calls.

Firefighters and our first responders leave their families and put themselves in harms way so they can help keep our communities safe. We can honour them by following their advice at this time.
