Behind the Scenes of Ka Whawhai Tonu!
What an incredible evening at Waikato Screen’s latest event! After a captivating screening of Ka Whawhai Tonu, the audience was treated to a special Behind the Scenes Q&A with the creative minds and talent behind the film.
Producer Piripi Curtis, Director Mike Jonathan, and the amazing actress Miriama Smith shared their insights, stories, and challenges from the making of this remarkable film, including the significance of telling their story of ancestry and culture in Te Reo. This film is a powerful expression of identity, heritage, and the history of this land.
We were also thrilled to have Mayor Toby Adams, one of our three attending, valued advisors, alongside Deserae Frisk and Esmae Mckenzie-Norton, among many other passionate filmmakers and supporters of our growing screen sector.
Check out the highlights from our last networking event for the year to see how we’re connecting and inspiring creatives across the Waikato region. Together, we’re building a thriving screen community and keeping Waikato on the film map!

Hey Waikato film fans,
Waikato Screen in association with @ibistainui is putting on a cool film event you should come too.
Some of the stars of ‘Ka Whawhai Tonu’ (the film set around siege of Ōrākau) are coming to do a Q and A on Monday December 9th at Lido Cinema - Hamilton.
The film screens at 4.30pm followed by a Q and A with producer Piripi Curtis, Director Mike Jonathan and actress Miriama Smith.
Come along and hear some war stories (excuse the pun) from the production and have a chance to ask the creators in person your burning questions about how this massive film was put together.
You must buy a ticket to attend the Q and A.

Waikato Screen recently supported the tour of Waikato shot feature film @Home Kills NZ Feature Film. The Waikato shot feature directed by Waikato Uni alum Haydn Butler and produced by locals Llanyon Joe (Matamata) and Matt Hicks (Cambridge) toured 11 cinemas around the Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Coromandel.
The film was well received with healthy (often sold out) crowds in all the towns it toured.
If you missed this black comedy/thriller it's available now for rent on Neon, YouTube, Google Play, Amazon Prime, Apple TV and Rialto (Sky Channel 39). https://www.flicks.co.nz/movie/home-kills/
Thanks to all that supported Waikato filmmakers putting Waikato scenery on Waikato big screens.
Waikato Screen hosted our first Māori Filmmakers Hui at Trust Waikato last friday. Our guests included exciting newcomers and seasoned pros from all across the Waikato. The team is still buzzing from an engaging, positive day of robust conversation, laughs and new friendships forged. Thanks to all that attended.
We had a fantastic networking event with special guest Tom Sainsbury, Comedian and Snapchat Dude.
Tom, who was raised locally, was an inspiring guest star who gave our community marvellous insights into his filmmaking journey.
Special thanks to our volunteers who offered their technical expertise on the night, namely Graham Lauder, Brandon Tubman, Nick Sheffield, Rob Pendergrast, and our superb MC Matt Hicks. He also edited this when he'd prefer someone else do it. Nice Editing Matt Hicks
Also, I want to express my gratitude to the fine team at Lido Cinema—Hamilton for once again being wonderful venue hosts.
Check out a sneak peek of a great night with Waikato Screen.

Hey Waikato Filmies,
Haydn Butler (writer/director/producer of Home Kills NZ Feature Film) is back from Australia for a fleeting visit, so we thought we’d lock him down and ask him some tough questions.
Join us for a little Q and A with Haydn as he talks about how he shot his Waikato indie feature, how the NZIFF release went and what the future holds for the film. After the Q and A we’ll have a mix and mingle/ general networking event.
This is a great opportunity to catch up with some old film friends, make some new ones and hopefully learn a bit about the filmmaking process as well.
Date: Tuesday March 5th.
6.30pm start.
Free event.
Location: Lido Cinema. 501 Victoria Street The Balcony, Centre Place Hamilton 3204.
Flick me a private message on Facebook so we can get a good gauge on how many people are coming.
