This week we shine a spotlight on composer Jacob Blair Tait. Jake is a longtime mainstay of the Waikato music community playing in many popular local bands in his younger years. Jake has since pivoted from band life to composing music for film. Jake talks to us about life as a freelance composer, career highlights and why he’s the man to make your project sonically pop.

1.Tell us what you do in the film industry and how long you have been doing it?

I am a film composer! I started out as many of us musicians have: in s**t bands, then good bands and then great bands pretending to be s**t bands that hu**ed guitars and broke violins on stage (my knees and back may never recover)! You know, the classic boy meets world “there goes those lovable scamps again” scenario. But I have always had a passion for film and over the last 12 years or so I made time outside of that nonsense to work on peoples small projects, shorts films, 48hour films, tv series, features… you name it and I gave it a go. I loved almost every minute of it!

2. What’s the best thing about being a composer?

Getting to see a director's face when they fall in love with, then hate, then loathe and then finally settle for one of my epic and amazing scores haha! Being serious though, that is kinda my favorite part, getting to watch someone's initial reaction to their project being transformed from a grouping of shots and scenes to an emotional journey. As a composer I often watch films and enjoy them differently through the story telling done by the music. I love inviting people into that world, those who don’t normally get to experience it in that way. In the beginning I didn’t appreciate that as much as I was so focused on how I felt about it but now I have really come to enjoy being able to change how an entire picture feels and being a part of that process.

3. What in your opinion makes a great film composer?

Knowing your limits and endeavouring to exceed them. But be realistic as well, if, for example, you are a classical composer with NO interest in writing the ‘next big pop hit’ for a person who treats you like their personal hit maker, don’t waste your time. There are others who want to work with you for who you are and what you do.I think leaning on the expertise of others in the network that you build is essential. If a scene calls for something that you can’t do, call a friend and see if you both can work it out together. Collaboration!!!

4. What advice would you give to someone starting in the film game who is interested in a career composing for film?

Don’t… but if you must: Stick to your guns but don’t scoff at feedback. If you feel like you have discovered something new or that you have created something that will change your career, don’t try to force into a scene. There will be plenty of time in the next film to use that, or even ask a director or film maker to help design a scene in their next film around it. If it’s that good, take your time and make sure it’s right. ALSO: Remember, you are VALUABLE! Never settle for less than you are worth, remember that this is a career. If you need some guidance on that there is a rate card on the guild page. And let's say that there is a project that you really want to work on but they just don’t have the budget. Offer to have them make up the difference with music videos or marketing materials for you.Always evolve. Directors often don’t know how to articulate what they are looking for, evolving and inviting them into the creative process is essential for a long term relationship. You can also have a damn good time creatively! A lot of laughs and a whole lot of regret the next day given the resulting product sounds like s**t, but you have created a foundation from which to build a long term relationship. Musically, you can always start over. This isn’t necessary, but remember, I love making movies: Find a director that brings you in at the script stage and lets you volunteer to be involved in other capacities, the more you know about this film the more you can include in the score that compliments not only the film but the stories and feelings people had on set, behind the scenes.

5. Do you have a career highlight or favourite projects you’ve worked on?

Given Matt Hicks is the one who sent me these questions and most people won't read this far, I feel obligated to say The Tavern, premiering in 2025. I am definitely not under duress while typing this, please go see it! Honestly, I am privileged to have worked on so many. I have one stand out, in the 2024 - 48hours I got to work with a team completely made up of my family. My kids were involved, my cousins, my parents etc… We got my Dad to dress up like a priest and my very health conscious uncle chain smoking fake ci******es. And it was a product we were proud of. At the beginning, only two of us were film makers. We are doing that every year now. I have made three unreleased short films this year that I LOVED doing. I got to create weird and extremely original pieces, bizarre worlds, something no one has heard before that I am really excited to show off. Working on the Tavern was very cool. I feel like it was such an honour getting to work on the score for an actor that had passed away. Creating an ode to their work while attempting to keep to the scene, a beautiful challenge that I was thrilled to be involved in. I also loved the challenge of making a comedy like this one feel real and taken seriously while not losing the comedic aspects to it.

6. Pitch yourself. Why should someone get Jake to compose their next film?

For those who want a great answer:
Get in early, I am pretty good now but I am getting better every day, improving, evolving and rebranding myself. I will one day be known as one of the greatest film composers of all time. John Williams, Alan Silvestri, Jacob Blair Tait, Danny Elfman, Rachel Portman, Randy Newman…. See you didn’t even notice that I put myself on that list. Get in touch now!

For those who want a good answer:
I am approachable, I am talented, I love working on films and I am not expensive yet.

For those who want a real answer:
I am the type of person who will endeavor to make your film incredible by working with you not for you. If you hire me, what you get is a former s**t musician turned into an epic film score composer that loves his job. I love working with those just as passionate about films as I am about making music. So get in touch, I am not scary!
