What should we abstain from? Here is the answer attributed to Hermes Trismegistus: Fasting is abstaining from all ignorance and all sadness, gluttony, mistrust, injustice, greed, loss, envy, violence, fear. In short, from all evil. On the other hand, it is feeding and living on true knowledge –– Gnosis –– in joy, sobriety, purity, justice, affability. In short: living on true Love.

True fasting is a state of mind; it is when it no longer desires anything in this world except what it needs to keep the body in time to fulfill its task down here. The progression of the candidate's state of life will provide for all biological needs in a fair and conflict-free way, since no one can live beyond their own state of consciousness.
