Rose and I were absolutely thrilled when Paul Lineham called into Cambridge for a coffee and a catch up this morning. Paul and I go back to the 'pirate' days of Radio Hauraki (1968!) As he lives in Queensland we don't see each other that often - but we have promised to organise a special Radio Hauraki and friends reunion soon.

David Gapes has been nominated for the 'Greatest Kiwi Of All Time' competition being run by Today FM.
David together with Doc O'Callahan, Derek Lowe and Chris Parkinson and the loyal land and boat crew, and many supporters changed the broadcast landscape in NZ forever. Radio Hauraki pirates broadcasting from TIRI and TIRI II in defiance of government restrictions changed the NZ law and became a legacy 'brand' in the New Zealand radio industry.
Make sure you vote supporting David's nomination on TODAYFM.CO.NZ

I was dismayed to read the NZ Herald column by Richard Prebble claiming that he and the Beatles were responsible for the deregulation of radio broadcasting in New Zealand.
How could anyone who purports to record facts fail to recognise that the Radio Hauraki pirates were responsible for smashing the government broadcasting monopoly in the 1960s?
It would seem that Prebble is trying to spread misinformation and alternative facts to enhance his own reputation.
I expect an apology from the NZ Herald and it would be helpful if a reputable journalist could explain the true facts about how freedom came to broadcasting in New Zealand.
Yours faithfully
Denis O'Callahan
Founding Director of Radio Hauraki
