The other day someone asked me whether you should use hashtags on Facebook. Here's my answer:

Unlike Instagram or X ( formerly Twitter), where hashtags were crucial for discoverability and engagement, Facebook operates a bit differently.

People use Facebook differently than they do other platforms. On Instagram, users used to actively search for content through hashtags, but on Facebook, they’re more likely to engage with content that appears organically in their feed based on their interests and interactions. Users typically don’t search for content by hashtags on Facebook, which means that using them isn’t as effective for reaching a broader audience.

Hashtags can also clutter your post, especially if you’re trying to fit in several of them. On Facebook, simplicity is key. A clean, focused message without hashtags can be more appealing and easier for your audience to digest.

Instead of relying on hashtags, use compelling visuals, strong calls to action, and engaging content to grab attention and encourage interaction.

While hashtags have their place on other platforms (and in my opinion are slowly being phased out on Instagram), they’re not a necessity on Facebook.

If you're running ad campaigns on Meta, there's a significant change you need to know about 👀

Meta has announced that they’re removing Detailed Targeting Exclusions from ad campaigns. This feature allowed advertisers to exclude specific audience segments from their ads based on detailed targeting options like demographics, interests, and behaviours.

So, what does this mean for your ads?

This change could impact how precisely you target your ads, potentially affecting ad performance and costs. Without the ability to exclude certain groups, your ads may be shown to a broader audience, which can lead to less efficient spending and possibly higher costs if the ads reach people who aren't your ideal audience.

What you can do ⬇️

1: Revisit your targeting strategy - take a closer look at your current ad campaigns and make adjustments to ensure you’re still reaching the right audience.

2: Use custom audiences - leverage custom audiences and lookalike audiences to maintain a level of specificity in who sees your ads.

3: Monitor ad performance - keep a close eye on your ad metrics to see how these changes are affecting your campaigns, and be ready to tweak as needed.

When I first started managing social media platforms, businesses weren’t even on Instagram yet and nobody knew what ‘influencers’ were. If you had 500 followers on Facebook, your posts would reach at least 450 people.

But these days it feels like it’s impossible to reach your audience 😩 Everybody’s attention spans are so tiny and the trends are constantly changing. More and more it’s feeling like social media is a pay to play game.

I'm throwing a party for your social media & despairing over slow results isn't invited 🤭

It can be really disheartening when we don't see the growth we're hoping for on our social media platforms, right? But here's a little secret for you - stay curious! This approach has helped me loads over my 13 years managing social media accounts.

Curiosity is the key when it comes to understanding the performance of your content. It's easy to take low engagement personally, or to make assumptions about what kind of content will be successful. But in my opinion - it's all about the numbers.

Don't predict.
Don't assume.

Instead, analyse! Look at the metrics, understand what they're telling you, and use that information to guide your content strategy. You might be surprised by what you find!

Keep exploring, keep learning, and most importantly, keep being curious!
