Last month our social media manager Jess was over in Newcastle, Australia for some live events mahi, but she was able to squeeze in a couple of sessions and workshops for the National Young Writers' Festival!
Here's a quick recap from Jess! 💭
👩🦽➡️ The first session was Criptology: the creative, personal, and political realities of writing about disability today with writers Beau Windon & Laura Penettenuzzo.
This was a really interesting session with my favourite quote being "if society wants different narratives, it needs to be set up for that." This is a big reason why I think is amazing because of their commitment to their kaupapa of ethical practice, creative excellence, and innovation. 'Nothing about Us, Without Us', right! The panel also spent a lot of time chatting about mainstream media's image of disability - which we know is usually way more nuanced and messy and diverse!
🎬 Second session of the day was Felicity Pickering's How Do I Put My Writing On Film & TV workshop.
I was on such a high after this session, mainly because I couldn't believe some of the ideas that came out of my own brain, which was all inspired by different pieces of music! I've been learning more about screenwriting this year, and it can often be quite lonely, so it was such a treat to be in the room with others chatting about ideas together!
Thanks National Young Writers' Festival! What a lovely festival!
