Headland: Literary Frontiers and Emerging Voices

Headland is a digital journal that publishes quality short literary fiction and creative non-fiction stories. Follow us on Twitter at and visit our website at www.headland.org.nz

The journal gives voice to aspiring writers, and a platform for first-time publication, alongside established authors. New Zealand is home to remarkable

literary talent, and Headland is a springboard for writers to explore and develop their potential, and showcase their early-career works. We welcome overseas submissions and seek to publish an international story in each issue. Headland aims to explore literary frontiers at home and abroad. With no subject parameters, writers are free to submit on any topic. Writers are paid $50 per piece, and every published piece is considered for our annual cash prizes. Headland is staffed by volunteers and produced in partnership with Massey University's Creative Writing programme.

In our most recent issue, two pieces share a curious common thread: birds.

While ‘Love in the Time of Te Rāhuinui’ and ‘Birds of a Feather’ differ in some ways, in others they seem to be in conversation.

Head to the extras section on our website to read a thought-provoking chat between the authors of these two pieces, Hiria and Chris, as they discuss their work, the future of conservation, and how people can be united through caring for nature more than themselves, albeit in different ways.
