Hi this is Mark Smith, I had a great time at The Buzzcocks last weekend!
Great energy with a fun crowd, and another late night!
On Going Underground this week we feature Madchesters Baggies - The Stone Roses, with their debut album from 1989 - so you may need the big speakers for this one!
Plus you’ll hear Billy Idol, Public Image Ltd, The The, Sugarcubes, Madness, Ultravox, Stranglers and much more in my mix.
So listen to the best two hours on the radio - on-air, online at rova.nz/the-sound or on ROVA.
It’s Going Underground, our Alt show on the Sound, Saturday from 6pm.
Concert Review: Georgia Cubbon
Last Friday at the tail end of a beautiful day, tens of thousands gathered for an event that had grunge fans quietly fizzing. Having faffed around too long to catch Liam Finn’s performance I picked up the pace of entry as soon as I heard the opening verses of The Pixies Gouge Away.
This was my first time seeing them live, and although I wouldn’t suggest their performance was lively, you could barely tell the difference between their delivery of 'Where Is My Mind' and the album version that rang out during the end credits of Fight Club 25 years ago.
As the sun set, and Pearl Jam began, I looked around and wondered how many of the now middle-aged women I was seated amongst had stripped down to their bra tops at Pearl Jam’s Supertop gig in ‘95? I mean, it was hot, but it wasn’t THAT hot.
No sheep on the stage this time around, but this mature version of our 90s superheroes didn’t disappoint with many of their well-known songs interspersed with gems like State of Love & Trust. Mike McCready delivered a blistering version of Eddie Van Halen’s Eruption, and a highlight was the epic nod to The Pixies with a verse from This Monkey’s Gone to Heaven played out alongside Pink Floyd’s Another Brick in the Wall during crowd pleaser Daughter.
I gotta admit I thought there was more to come after the jam-style version of Neil Young’s Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World, but that’s only because I didn’t want it to end. Solid show, thoroughly elated crowd and shout out to security who were pleasant and easy-going throughout.
