Released NOV 17 2003 - ‘U2 Go Home: Live from Slane Castle' is a concert film of the band’s legendary home-coming gig at Slane Castle, Ireland during the Elevation Tour. The emotionally charged historic live set captures the remarkable atmosphere with spine-tingling clarity. Bono dedicates a performance of ‘Kite’ to his father, who had died on 21 August 2001, several days before the concert.

Queen’s 'Greatest Hits' album is owned by one in four households in the UK.

While they had eight gold studio albums and seven platinum, it's their Greatest Hits compilation that has been at the top of the ‘biggest selling of all-time’ chart year after year.

Two years ago it passed the 7 million sales mark - youtube.com/watch?v=9D0WgJCobss&t=43s

Wonder how many kiwi households have the album? Hands up those that do….?

Hi this is Mark Smith, I had a great time at The Buzzcocks last weekend!

Great energy with a fun crowd, and another late night!

On Going Underground this week we feature Madchesters Baggies - The Stone Roses, with their debut album from 1989 - so you may need the big speakers for this one!

Plus you’ll hear Billy Idol, Public Image Ltd, The The, Sugarcubes, Madness, Ultravox, Stranglers and much more in my mix.

So listen to the best two hours on the radio - on-air, online at rova.nz/the-sound or on ROVA.

It’s Going Underground, our Alt show on the Sound, Saturday from 6pm.

1969- Janis Joplin calls out a policeman at her concert in Tampa, Florida, when he uses a bullhorn to yell at audience members who have left their seats. "Don't F--k with those people!" she screams. "What are you so uptight about? Did you buy a $5 ticket?" The cop tells Joplin that she needs to tell the crowd to remain seated, and she replies, "I'm not telling them s--t."
After more stage ranting where Joplin threatens to kick his face in, she is arrested after the show, charged with using "vulgar and indecent language." After posting a $504 bail, the charges are later dropped and she pays a $200 fine.

On 12th November 1945, one of rock music’s most influential figures, Neil Young, was born. Known for his raw, authentic sound and poignant lyrics, Young has crafted a musical legacy that spans over five decades. His journey has taken him from his early days with Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young to his prolific solo career, where he created classics like ‘Harvest’, ‘After the Gold Rush’, and ‘Rust Never Sleeps’. Rolling Stone has recognised many of these albums as some of the greatest of all time, and his timeless influence continues to shape rock and folk music today.

In our YouTube series Riffing, Kiwi legend Liam Finn honoured Young’s legacy with a stirring rendition of his iconic riffs from ‘Live Rust’, showing that Neil Young’s music remains as powerful and relevant as ever. Young’s enduring spirit continues to inspire generations of artists and fans, and today, we celebrate his remarkable contributions to music history.

Concert Review: Georgia Cubbon

Last Friday at the tail end of a beautiful day, tens of thousands gathered for an event that had grunge fans quietly fizzing. Having faffed around too long to catch Liam Finn’s performance I picked up the pace of entry as soon as I heard the opening verses of The Pixies Gouge Away.

This was my first time seeing them live, and although I wouldn’t suggest their performance was lively, you could barely tell the difference between their delivery of 'Where Is My Mind' and the album version that rang out during the end credits of Fight Club 25 years ago.

As the sun set, and Pearl Jam began, I looked around and wondered how many of the now middle-aged women I was seated amongst had stripped down to their bra tops at Pearl Jam’s Supertop gig in ‘95? I mean, it was hot, but it wasn’t THAT hot.
No sheep on the stage this time around, but this mature version of our 90s superheroes didn’t disappoint with many of their well-known songs interspersed with gems like State of Love & Trust. Mike McCready delivered a blistering version of Eddie Van Halen’s Eruption, and a highlight was the epic nod to The Pixies with a verse from This Monkey’s Gone to Heaven played out alongside Pink Floyd’s Another Brick in the Wall during crowd pleaser Daughter.

I gotta admit I thought there was more to come after the jam-style version of Neil Young’s Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World, but that’s only because I didn’t want it to end. Solid show, thoroughly elated crowd and shout out to security who were pleasant and easy-going throughout.

9th November 1973. Billy Joel released ‘Piano Man’, the album that would become his signature work and cement his place in music history.

Did you know? The song's signature harmonica riff wasn’t part of the original composition. Joel added it later, and it became an iconic part of the track. Also, the piano used in the recording belonged to Joel’s friend and fellow musician, Doug Stegmeyer—who would later become his bassist.

‘Piano Man’ wasn’t just a hit, it was the start of Billy Joel’s musical legacy. What’s your favourite Billy Joel song?

Considering the array of deadly props used in his live show, it’s no surprise Alice Cooper has endured his fair share of onstage injuries. So far, the list includes: nearly being hung to death on multiple occasions due to a gallows stunt gone wrong, accidentally stabbing himself in the leg with a sword, and breaking six ribs after falling offstage. Cooper even warns every musician who joins his band that they’ll inevitably get stitches due to the dangerous nature of his show.

It was expected of Rob Halford, after becoming one of his most famous concert moves, to ride his Harley Davidson motorcycle onstage. So it came as no surprise when he rolled out during Judas Priest’s performance on Aug. 19, 1991 in Toronto. However something went wrong with the bike, and it struck a drum riser sending the singer to the ground. Halford broke his nose and was knocked unconscious in the accident.

Making matters worse, the stage was covered in fog at the time, creating low visibility for staff to find him. Guitarist Glenn Tipton eventually stumbled upon the singer then revived him, and Halford finished his set before heading to the hospital. The incident contributed to Halford’s departure from Judas Priest in 1992.

He's been chilling with Kiwi rock legends.
