14 January 1975 - Joe Walsh received a Gold record for his third solo album, ‘So What’, a project that showcased his raw talent and versatility as a guitarist and songwriter. Walsh’s close friendship with members of the Eagles began to solidify during this album's production. Don Henley penned the lyrics for "Falling Down" and contributed backing vocals to both "Falling Down" and "Time Out." Don Henley, Glenn Frey and Randy Meisner also provided backing harmonies on "Turn to Stone" and "Help Me Through the Night".

This collaboration was a precursor to Walsh officially joining Eagles later that year, marking the start of a legendary chapter in rock history. ‘So What’ remains a fan favourite, blending introspection and humour with Walsh’s signature guitar work.

Today, we celebrate the birth of the incomparable David Bowie, born 8 January 1947. With his chameleon-like ability to reinvent himself, Bowie blurred the lines between artist and icon, exploring identity, alienation and the future in ways no one else dared. His pioneering work in glam rock, from Ziggy Stardust to the Thin White Duke, forever changed the way we perceive performance and persona.

From the introspective beauty of ‘Space Oddity’ to the avant-garde experimentation of ‘Low’, Bowie constantly pushed boundaries with his fearless exploration of genre and sound. His time in Berlin, surrounded by the chaos of the city, birthed some of his most daring and experimental work, giving us ‘Heroes’ and ‘The Berlin Trilogy’.

As we reflect on his birthday, we honour a man who didn’t just change music—he changed the way we view art itself. Bowie’s legacy continues to inspire, challenge and transform, just as he did throughout his extraordinary life.

7 January 1980 - Led Zeppelin's ‘In Through the Out Door’ earned a Platinum disc, marking a bittersweet milestone as it became the final album released before the untimely death of drummer John Bonham on 25 September the same year. The LP showcased a band in transition, with bassist John Paul Jones and vocalist Robert Plant taking a larger creative role due to Jimmy Page and Bonham's struggles with personal issues.

Recorded at ABBA’s Polar Studios in Stockholm, Sweden, the album featured a more experimental sound, incorporating Jones’s use of synthesisers and Plant’s introspective lyrics. Despite its departure from their earlier heavy blues-rock style, the album was a commercial triumph, debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200 in its second week and also topping charts in the UK, Canada and New Zealand.

The original album packaging included a unique gimmick: a plain brown paper bag sleeve concealing one of six cover designs, and an inner sleeve that revealed colourful artwork when dampened—a testament to the band's penchant for creativity even in presentation.

Today, we remember Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett, born on 6 January 1946. As the original creative force behind Pink Floyd, Syd's imaginative songwriting and otherworldly presence gave birth to a new era of psychedelia. Syd, ever the free spirit, found inspiration in Cambridge's tranquil countryside and often drew from Lewis Carroll's whimsical tales to shape his lyrics.

Though his time in the spotlight was brief, his surreal lyrics and haunting melody live on. Syd's genius lay in his ability to turn dreams into soundscapes, despite admitting “It’s rather difficult to think of ideas or thoughts that aren’t conventional.”

On his birthday, we reflect on the indelible mark Syd left on music and the arts—a legacy as unpredictable and luminous as the man himself.

5 January 1973 - Aerosmith released their self-titled debut album, marking the arrival of a raw and gritty rock band destined for legendary status. Recorded in just two weeks at Intermedia Studios in Boston with a modest budget of $125,000, the album introduced the world to the band’s bluesy swagger and frontman Steven Tyler’s distinctive vocal style. The now well-loved track "Dream On," often considered Aerosmith’s signature ballad, was a song Tyler had been working on since he was a teenager, with its original riff written on his father’s piano. Interestingly, when the album was first released, it failed to make a significant impact, and its producer, Adrian Barber, faced criticism for a relatively flat sound mix that didn’t fully capture the band’s live energy.

The album cover photograph was taken in Boston, cementing their local image before they skyrocketed to fame. Though initially overlooked, the album gained traction after the band's relentless touring, and by the mid-1970s, it was recognised as a foundational work that showcased their burgeoning talent and hinted at the explosive success to come.

Released today in 1967 – ‘The Doors’, the self-titled debut album by The Doors, shattered boundaries and introduced the world to their darkly poetic sound. Recorded at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles, the album fused blues, rock and psychedelia, creating a sonic landscape as unpredictable as Jim Morrison's iconic stage presence.

Featuring classics like "Break On Through (To the Other Side)" and the hypnotic "Light My Fire," this groundbreaking record cemented The Doors as trailblazers of countercultural rock and left their mark in 1960s music history.

Happy Birthday to StephenStills. A cornerstone of rock history, Stills has had a remarkable career as a member of iconic groups like Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills & Nash (and sometimes Young) and as a solo artist. His multi-instrumental talents and soulful songwriting made him a driving force behind classics like “For What It's Worth” and “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes”.

Before his rise to fame, Stills almost joined The Monkees but decided against it, sensing it might limit his creative freedom. Instead, he recommended Peter Tork for the role.

Stills was friends with Jimi Hendrix and played organ on Hendrix’s “Somewhere”. Stills was also instrumental in shaping the sound of folk-rock by blending acoustic textures with electric intensity, as showcased on CSN's debut album.

20 December 1970 - George Harrison made history by becoming the first solo Beatle to achieve a #1 album in the US with ‘All Things Must Pass.’ The triple album, featuring the iconic single "My Sweet Lord," topped the Billboard charts for an impressive seven weeks. This success marked a major milestone for Harrison after The Beatles. The album was a deeply personal reflection of his spiritual journey, blending rock, folk, and Indian influences, and was recorded with the help of fellow musicians like Eric Clapton and Ringo Starr.

‘All Things Must Pass’ was eventually certified 6X Platinum by the RIAA and was ranked #437 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

29 December 1966 - The Jimi Hendrix Experience performed their groundbreaking single "Hey Joe" on the UK TV show ‘Top of the Pops’. This marked a pivotal moment in Jimi Hendrix's rise to stardom. The song would go on to enter the UK Top 10 in January 1967, peaking at #6.

"Hey Joe" would later gain critical acclaim, earning a spot at #201 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time in 2010. Its raw power and Hendrix's distinctive style helped cement the track as a defining moment in rock history.

28 December 1968 - The Flight to Lowlands Paradise II festival marked a key moment in Pink Floyd's evolution as they stepped in to replace Jimi Hendrix, who had originally been slated to headline. This change came during a transitional phase for the band; it was their first major performance after Syd Barrett’s departure earlier that year.

The festival lineup also reflected the experimental and countercultural spirit Hendrix had popularised, making his absence a poignant note in the event’s history. For Pink Floyd, the opportunity to headline such a significant European festival helped solidify their reputation as pioneers of psychedelic and progressive rock, setting the stage for their monumental success in the following years.

Happy Birthday to David Knopfler, born 27 December 1952, a talented musician, songwriter and co-founder of Dire Straits. While his older brother Mark often took the spotlight, David played an integral role in shaping the band's early sound, contributing rhythm guitar and co-writing on their first two albums, including classics like ‘Sultans of Swing’. However, creative differences led David to part ways with Dire Straits during the recording of their third album.

David’s post-Dire Straits career is marked by a quieter, introspective path. He transitioned to a solo career, releasing albums that explore folk, blues and soft rock influences, showcasing his poetic songwriting and reflective style. David has also authored books of poetry and has dabbled in film soundtracks, expanding his artistic reach beyond music. Today, he remains an advocate for independent artistry and environmental causes, inspiring with his authenticity and commitment to creativity.

Eagles' sixth album, 'Hotel California' spent the first of eight non-consecutive weeks at the top of the American Billboard chart. The band's first LP with Joe Walsh and last with bass player Randy Meisner has now sold over 34 million copies worldwide.

The band found themselves having to compromise during the recording of the album after producer Bill Szymczyk’s bad earthquake experience in LA, which then led to a fear of living on a fault line. Production sessions were split between the band’s favoured California base and Miami.

An entirely different seismic problem came via Black Sabbath who were recording in an adjacent studio - the Eagles were forced to stop recording on numerous occasions because Sabbath were too loud and the sound was coming through the ‘soundproof’ wall.
