It’s been a week since we lost the legend John Mayall. Sir Mick Jagger led the tributes, saying he was “a great pioneer of British blues.”

Eric Clapton’s response was particularly emotional, thanking Mayall for "rescuing me from oblivion" when he was going to quit music. "I learned all that I really have to go on today in terms of technique, and desire to play, the kind of music I love to play," he added. "He was my mentor, and as a surrogate father too, he taught me all I really know and gave me the courage and enthusiasm to express myself without fear or without limit."

RIP John Mayall

Winning with 58% of the vote - it wasn't much but it was enough for Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon to claim the Vinyl Face-Off title for 2024! Congrats to Jason who won $500 cash for voting during the competition, and thanks to all who backed these classic albums in some very fierce battles!

What albums should be brought into future Vinyl Face-Offs?

“I'd rather be dead than singing 'Satisfaction' when I'm 45.” - Mick Jagger.

Well, good luck getting through any Rolling Stones shows without playing that classic!

Happy birthday to you, Sir Mick Jagger. He’s 81 today and to prove a point, check out a live performance from 2013, when Mick was 70. It’s still a great live moment and of course, ‘Satisfaction’ is still in the current set lists, being the final encore song!

What do you think is the greatest song Mick ever wrote?

"I'm sick to death of people saying we've made 11 albums that sounds exactly the same, In fact, we've made 12 albums that sound exactly the same" Angus Young - 1989.

Over 50 million people can’t be wrong! Today in 1980, AC/DC came back after the tragic loss of Bon Scott with “Back in Black”.

Although the album was a critical success in many territories, here in NZ if failed to break into the top 20, yet would achieve 6 x platinum sales over time.

Back in Black (like many AC/DC releases) was pulled apart by reviews with one female critic calling the album “a preposterous, drongoid record, built on casual sexism, eye-rolling double entendres, a highly questionable attitude to sexual consent and a crass celebration of the unthinking macho hedonism that killed the band's original singer….but, nonetheless, a heavy metal masterpiece” naming it “her favourite album ever".

Well, as long as you can take a position and stick with it. By the way, what’s your favourite track off the album?

A drummer and a keyboardist walk into a bar….

Well, that’s not much of a start to a great gag but these two musicians are no joke. One has cracked 77 and the other is chuffed (we assume) to now be an octogenarian.

Don Henley will be spending the day with his wife Sharon and the family after coming off tour about a month ago. We’re still hoping the tour will be extended…fingers crossed.

Rick Davies will also be spending time with his wife Sue, who officially became his manager in 1984, despite marrying in 1977 (which means she’s been the boss since then anyway). Davies has said it’s unlikely he’s ever tour as Supertramp again, and at 80, we could say he has nothing left to prove.

Happy 77th to Don Henley and 80th to Rick Davies. Both part of the Classic Rock journey on The Sound.

In terms of debut album success, it’s hard to fault the arrival of Guns & Roses in 1987 with “Appetite for Destruction”.

Released today, Billboard magazine has credited the album as the best selling debut album of all time in the US, with estimated worldwide sales of almost 30 million copies.

Despite record sales, the album topped the charts in only two countries, the US and here in NZ.

Rather than talk about it’s impact and legacy, tonight Woodsie will feature the album in the Sunday Sideshow. Tune in and turn it up.

Carlos Humberto Santana Barragán is 77 today. Arguably the coolest cat to ever come from Mexico, Carlos Santana is synonymous with San Francisco and the explosion of hippie culture.

Widely regarded for his guitar prowess, Santana once said of his acid fueled performance at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 that his guitar neck looked and felt like a wiggling snake, resisting his efforts to play. On stage he asked “Please God…don't let me screw up!”.

After falling our of favor in the 80’s, Santana’s career was in the doldrums in the 90’s until Clive Davis signed him to a new record deal and was instrumental in the creation of Santana’s rise from the ashes with “Supernatural” in June of 1999.

Going on to become the best selling album of all time by a Hispanic artist, with estimates worldwide sales of over 30 million, the album went to #1 in more countries than we can list here, including in NZ.

Sweeping the Grammy awards in 2000 taking home a record nine Grammy’s, Carlos last toured here on a double bill with the Doobie Brothers.

Always entertaining, forever flamboyant and guaranteed LOUD.

“The guitar was my weapon, my shield to hide behind.”

And what a weapon it is, as Sir Brian Harold May turns 77 today.

Brian May has been described online as the guitarist, composer and backing vocalist for Queen, which conveniently overlooks his lead vocals on songs like “Who Wants to Live Forever”, “Some Day One Day”, “39” and many more.

And as a composer he wrote some of Queen’s most beloved songs.

“We Will Rock You”, “Tie Your Mothers Down”, “I Want It All” (written about his future wife Anita Dobson) and the beautiful “Who Wants to Live Forever” are just a handful of the songs written by Brian May.

Famous for playing his home made 'Red Special guitar, his preferred use of a sixpence coin as a guitar pick, his intellect in astrophysics and his work as an animal rights activist, Brian May was knighted by King Charles last year.

“For a time I didn't want to answer any questions about Queen. I'd like to be viewed as something alive and relevant, not some fossil.”

Well, this gentleman is certainly no fossil and is currently enjoying a break from touring with Roger Taylor and Adam Lambert.

Oh and by the way, it was also today in 1980, Queen scored their third UK No.1 album with 'The Game'. Not a bad birthday present Mr. May.

Today we tip our hats to Brian May. Guitarist, composer, vocalist, activist and beloved performer.

"I had always liked Ginger", explained Clapton.

"Ginger had come to see me play with the Bluesbreakers. After the gig he drove me back to London in his Rover. I was very impressed with his car and driving. He was telling me that he wanted to start a band, and I had been thinking about it too."

And ultimately thanks to Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton having previously worked with Jack Bruce, they formed a trio today in 1966 that became known as Cream.

The name simply coming from their individual reputations as being among the ‘cream of the crop’ in the British music scene.

However the irony is that even as they began their music journey, Baker and Bruce had an existing relationship that was volatile at best. Perhaps due to the individuals and the personalities, Cream were always going to ‘go off’.

Not long after forming, Clapton himself knew they couldn’t last when at a concert, when he stopped playing neither Baker nor Bruce noticed.

Clapton has also commented that Cream's later gigs mainly consisted of its members showing off, while Baker and Bruce have both admitted that their final shows were not up to standard.

Like so many before and after them, the infighting is part of the story of Cream. Three gifted musicians who for a while held the accolade of being a supergroup.

What’s your favourite Cream song?

July 13th, 1985, the music world changed forever!

Today in 1985, inspired by the successful charity single "Do They Know It's Christmas?", Live Aid was held simultaneously at Wembley Stadium in London and at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia.

72,000 people rocked Wembley while close to 90,000 did the same in Philadelphia. On the same day, concerts inspired by the initiative were held in the Soviet Union, Canada, Japan, Yugoslavia, Austria, Australia, and West Germany.

Live Aid was one of the largest satellite link-ups and television broadcasts of all time; an estimated audience of 1.9 billion eyes in 150 nations watching the live broadcast. That was close to 40% of the world population!

Bob Geldolf spoke of the lofty goals of Live Aid to ‘feed the world’ saying "We took an issue that was nowhere on the political agenda and, through music we were able to address the intellectual absurdity and the moral repulsion of people dying of want in a world of surplus."

And while the debate remains on the effectiveness of Live Aid, the event itself was a cultural phenomenon!

Putting aside the infighting about who appeared, who declined to show up, who were omitted as performers, who knocked it out of the park and who fell short up on stage and who gave shady answers as to why they declined the invitation to participate, Live Aid will remain one of the greatest singular moments in music.

What was your favourite moment of Live Aid?

Today, we remember the sweet songstress of Fleetwood Mac.

Christine McVie was born today in 1943 and found fame as an integral member of Fleetwood Mac, writing some of their most beloved songs.

“Say You Love Me”, “Don’t Stop”, “Little Lies”, “Hold Me” and the famous track written about her affair with a lighting tech after divorcing John McVie, “You Make Lovin Fun” (ouch John).

Thanks to the influence of her father who was a concert violinist and her mother who was a faith healer and psychic, McVie described her music and song writing as “trying to say I love you in a million different ways. That's what I aspire to do. That's what I do best. I write about unrequited love in a very optimistic way.”

Christine McVie died of a stroke on November 30th, 2022 at the age of 79.

One has cracked 65 today, the other would have been 78 today.

Both hailing from Scotland, one made his name by moving to Australia and becoming the beloved lead singer in the early days of AC/DC.

The other formed Simple Minds in 1977, taking their name from a line from David Bowie’s “Jean Genie”…"He's so simple minded, he can't drive his module".

Both have their own style and both have legions of fans around the world, so today we send birthday wishes to Jim Kerr and we remember Bon Scott.

Two front men who demanded your attention every time they were on stage.
