There’s a new pie to report on for my pie chart in New Zealand 😲! Okay… I haven’t actually made a pie chart yet reviewing all of my favorite pies 😆. However, I’m gathering enough data to make the opportunity highly tempting 😅! This one was pretty good though. My father in law Andrew Jones brought me this pie as baked motivation, while working on his static house truck to be his future home in New Zealand. This particular morsel was a vegetarian pie, which apparently has some local clout amongst food reviewers. Comprised of a creamy mushroom filling with a delectable buttery crust I give Blackhood Bakes 👍👍 on this creation. Albeit a bit more pricy than your standard pie at $9NZD a pop 😳, I reckon their quality of ingredients likely necessitates a heftier price tag than your standard pie. Hopefully the slightly elevated price also a reflects the establishment’s level of care for their employees 🤞. Well done Blackhood for making a vegetarian pie that rivals the likes of a classic meat classic!

It’s about time for me to make more winter edition body butter 🙌! The weather is getting colder, which means our skin needs a bit of extra love and moisture in our little van life. Here in New Zealand, the native plant kawa kawa is abundant and perfect for infusing into our blend of moisturizer for sensitive and eczema prone skin. I’ve discovered that a blend of h**p seed oil (made here locally) as well as Shea butter (not so local 😆) is perfect as a base. I also really love using kawa kawa for ingesting purposes like making tea, which is a great digestive aid, as well as in cooking, where its peppery flavors play well in many dishes. A fascinating tip for kawa kawa foragers is to always pick the holely leaves over perfect looking ones. The best leaves with the most nutritious/ medicinal properties are supposedly the ones that bugs instinctively are attracted to munch on 😀.

Meeting new friends while traveling is always a highlight of adventuring 🙌! I love the way that serendipity dips into our lives when we choose to recognize and play with her😀. These friends are true followers of serendipity in addition to being ever so deep in our hearts ❤️. Through the course of our adventures to England in 2023, we convinced a UK native (Poppy) to come to New Zealand! (I’m sure she only came due to our persuasion 😉). We in due course met Toby🙌❤️😊, who travelled alongside Poppy for several months🤗. Toby is now off on a new adventure of his own, constructing a tiny house in the UK and dreaming up garden schemes at our mutual friend’s land in Reading England. We miss Toby dearly, but we are so excited for his next chapter in the UK and we can’t wait until our next future weaving together in life!

We finally checked out Potts Reserve in Ōtaki yesterday! 🙌 I’ve heard so much about this swimming hole, but this was our first visit. It’s truly a gorgeous reserve for a dip on a warm day.

Sunsets don’t get much more gorgeous than Ōtaki beach. While we stay on our friends’ farm to work on my father in law’s house truck it’s always nice to pop out to the coast for a wee break 😊.

A few weekends ago we took a brief jaunt out to one of my favourite coasts of the lower North Island, Cape Palliser 🤩🏄‍♂️🦭!

The seal colony and surf are always worth the trek and there’s a cool lighthouse! The feeling you get of smallness there on the rocky coast surrounded by nothingness is also WORTH IT!

We didn’t do any surfing this trip. Although the waves looked EPIC! Instead I sketched the scenery from our van 🤗. # surfingnz aloud

While feeling under the weather this week I relished in a walk in a nearby forest trail. Somehow nature has a way to help heal the mind and body. This sketch is of some really cool trees near Makara Summit 😀.

It’s difficult to find good Mexican food and ingredients in New Zealand. But that doesn’t stop my cravings 🤤! Fresh restaurant style salsa is pretty easy to make with a usb charging blender! We found ours at Briscoe’s in Wellington and it’s great for smoothies, hummus and salsa! The cleanup on our particular one is tricky, but the battery life and size are great!

NZ PIES!!! 🥧
They’re not necessarily the healthiest meal, but my are they tasty and filling! New Zealand has a big pie culture. You can find them at most every bakery and petrol station as an inexpensive breakfast, teatime or lunch snack. Sam’s favorite flavor is steak and cheese. My go to is pepper steak, but the varieties are endless! We are on a constant hunt for THE BEST PIE every new town we visit…
