My latest obsession: canvas bags. They are so well made! With big solid zips and simple carry handles that don’t get in the way. Their small tent peg bag is perfect size for many things in the van, and designed for tent pegs means it’s strong. And a bonus: they come packaged in their another thin bag with mesh. So bonus packing cube! And only $20 on sale… available in a variety of sizes. Soft bags work well in a van, to fit into odd spaces. Thanks Oztrail.

Diesel heater maintenance is not exactly fun, but after white smoke pouring out when trying to use it, and 3.5 years, I decided it was time for a service. The smoke I suspect was an o ring failure, leaking coolant fluid into the exhaust pipe! I replaced the gasket and glow plug while I was in there. So that’s two afternoons gone, but I bet I could do it quicker next time…

So after installing a lovely wooden floor, I knew I had to be able to chuck heavy gear in the ‘boot’ and didn’t want to scratch up the wood. So I’m with some rubber coin mat, which I’ve wrapped over the edge until I can figure out a nicer way to edge the rear… anyone got any ideas? It’s curved, and my existing aluminium edge is ugly with a capital UG

New bed base nearly complete. Switching from plywood to aluminium tube has saved about 80% of the weight! The bench seat side went from 11.6Kg to 2.8Kg 🤯. The couch side had way more plywood, about 32Kg from memory. So why not 80/20? That would be stronger, but also heavier, and due to more aluminium, more expensive. The tube is easy to work with, cut anywhere, can also drill holes for bolts, use rivnuts to bolt into, or screw through onto wood. Once bolted onto the wall it’s surprisingly solid.

The ultimate, hidden away, pull out into the shower toilet. After years of dragging it out and scratching the floor, we now have a proper drawer slide! The trick was turning it around and swapping the vent exhaust to the other side to fit better. That pipe sticking out takes a lot of room

I struggled on how to make a good step. Previously I used an aluminium strip as a corner between the vinyl and wood. This time, solid wood allows the option to route the end and make something a bit… nicer :)

A productive day getting the new floor ready. This is a test fit, so I can figure out the edges. Unbelievably this was a cheap auction purchase and I’m very happy with it 😍. Solid oak, pre-finished, not too thick (so not too heavy), and over 6m2 for $100 total. Also figured out how to mount the new batteries! Sunk into the floor to create more space above them. It’s all coming together nicely 😅

Normally these images go the other way. Now completely clean and ready for a new floor! Gave me a chance to see how it held up after 3 years of living. No rust, except for a few bits where the paint had been cut or scraped. The new floor allows for a few improvements including:
- more solid floor with ribs and stronger wood instead of vinyl
- I’ll seal the edges to stop water/dust getting underneath so easily
- can run some cables underneath
Any other suggestions?
I was tempted by underfloor heating but decided probably not required!!
