Statement from The Circuit Climbing regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the ensuing war on Ukraine.
The Circuit Climbing has been a part of the international climbing media since 2013. During that time I have forged close relationships with many climbers from around the globe and I use my platform to promote climbers of all genders, ethnicities, and nationalities.
As a result of the actions of the Putin led Russian forces in the Ukraine, I am no longer in a position to promote Russian climbers with a clear conscience. The Circuit Climbing condemns in the strongest possible terms the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the bullying dialogue of Putin on the international stage.
I may only manage a small media outlet, however that does not mean I cannot take the actions within my power to condemn Russia’s actions and show solidarity with the people of Ukraine.
Until a suitable resolution of the current conflict is reached, The Circuit Climbing will no longer promote Russian athletes or the Russian Climbing Federation through the production of any media featuring either Russian climbers or climbing events within Russia.
This causes me significant sadness as I have always championed those in the Russian climbing community and I have supported them through The Circuit media channels and by connecting them with potential sponsors etc where possible.
The Russian Climbing federation has been a stalwart member of the international climbing community and has often stepped up and facilitated events when required, actions above those taken by many other federations and I have always been hugely appreciative of their work. This shared passion for the sport and my close personal friendships within both the Russian Climbing Federation and the Russian Climbing Team make this decision painful at a personal level, but it is one that needs to be made.
I understand that many of the Russian climbing community do not support the actions of the Russian Government, and many have already taken to social media to publicly confirm their position for which I applaud their bravery. This carries real risk for those athletes as public dissention has often proved dangerous to those within the Russian Federation.
To my friends in Ukraine, huge respect to those who are standing up for the freedom of their nation, to those working to place refugees in safe locations, and to those who are sharing their plight so that their friends internationally can understand the gravity of what it means to be invaded and have your very existence threatened.
