Getting back to our double feature for the day focused on Possession and Exorcism films. It's a genre that celebrated its fiftieth birthday a couple of years ago but has done little to move out of cliches of Catholic priests chanting rites and the possessee in cracked face taunting insults and levitating furniture. That said, here is one entry that does shake the cliches up.

Accidental Exorcist (2016). A low-budget but nevertheless at times quite funny version of an exorcism film. Moreover, one that definitely throws out all the tired clichés of the genre and does something quite different with it.

Today I am devoting a double feature to Possession and Exorcism movies, a genre that grew out of the success of The Exorcist and one that shows no sign of ending any time soon, even though it has done little to change the same essential cliches since the 1970s. The first of these goes right back to the early days of the original Possession and Exorcism fad.

Good Against Evil (1977). From the great and underrated Paul Wendkos, a 1970s tv movie that taps the deviltry movie fads of the day and becomes a blatant copy of The Exorcist, albeit cleaned up for tv sensibilities

Earth Abides is a classic novel that fairly much defined the theme of survival in the aftermath of the collapse of civilisation. Stephen King cites it as a major influence on The Stand. This is a TV mini-series adaptation of the book

George A. Romero, the creator of the modern zombie film with Night of the Living Dead, was hired to make the very first Resident Evil film. He was then abruptly fired and we ended up with popular Resident Evil films we did. Rumours of Romero's plans for Resident Evil are legendary. This is a documentary that sets out to get to the bottom of what happened.

In the double feature today, I am covering Underground Horrors. The underground is a unique venue within genre cinema, brimming with lost worlds, prehistoric life and all manner of creatures.

Arctic Hollow (2024). A film about the Symmes Hole and the Hollow Earth - the scientifically discredited and geologically preposterous notion that there the centre of the Earth is hollow and has another world there. This is a low-budget film about a venture into the Hollow Earth in search of a missing person and encounters with creatures there.

Today I am devoting a double feature to Underground Horrors. In genre cinema, the underground has always been an exotic realm filled with lost worlds and cities, prehistoric life and even the geologically absurd notion of a Hollow Earth. There's been a whole other body of works about people encountering troglodytes and monsters in the underground. We look at a couple of these.

The Strangeness (1985). This was one of the first on the subject of people venturing underground and encountering cave monsters - in this case a Lovecraftian entity. It was also one of the first women-directed horror films

So on today's double feature, we are looking at Amityville Horrors - the substantial industry of films (some 40 odd) that lay claim to be based on the hoax that was the book and film The Amityville Horror.

Amityville Karen (2022). By the 2020s, the Amityville copycats are no longer taking themselves seriously as witness titles like Amityville Bigfoot, Amityville Frankenstein, even Amityville Vi****or.

The term Karen has come to mean an entitled woman who complains a great deal. This is a horror comedy about one such possessed Karen

Today I am devoting a double feature to Amityville Horrors. Despite later being proven to be a hoax, The Amityville Horror book and then film has been enormously successful. There has been a mountain of sequels, several legitimate but mostly films that claim the Amityville name and have little to mostly no connection to the original.

Let's start with Amityville Playhouse (2015). One out of some 30 odd films using the Amityville name, this concerns a haunted theatre in the town
