Gunners Day
Napier had the honour early this morning of being the first place in New Zealand, and the Commonwealth, to celebrate Gunners Day - the anniversary of the formation of Britain’s Royal Regiment of Artillery. With 2016 marking the 300th anniversary of the Royal Artillery, gunners from the New Zealand Army's 16th Field Regiment travelled from Linton to fire three blank rounds from a 105mm L119 Light Gun - each round marking 100 years of the regiment's history - from Napier's Soundshell, beginning around 6am. Lt Thomas Murgatroyd explained that after the first dawn gun at Napier, there was a "ripple" of volleys around the country as rounds were fired at one minute intervals from Auckland’s North Head Reserve in Devonport, Hamilton, Waiouru, Linton, Levin, and Wellington. We also spoke to Napier mayor Bill Dalton who had the honour of firing the second round. Special thanks to Adam Milnes from Grassmarket Media LTD for creating the video for us! (Tip: watch it in HD)

Fire gutted a house in Cameron Rd on Bluff Hill in the Napier inner city this morning.
No-one is believed to have been home at the time of the fire, which had engulfed the two-level house before 10.30am. A woman believed to be a occupant of the old timber home was seen speaking to fire crews, visibly upset but uninjured.
Large flames and a thick column of smoke were clearly visible from the Napier CBD, with city workers and shoppers standing in the streets to film the fire on their smart phones.
At least four fire crews had to navigate the narrow streets on the hill to attend the fire, which they soon had under control, though it took at least an hour to fully extinguish hot spots in the roof. (0:35).
