SOFIA, NASA’s flying telescope, has cancelled the rest of its South Island deployment, because the aircraft was damaged during high winds on Monday. Repairs are likely to take three weeks, so the remaining Christchurch-based missions won’t be carried out. The departure of the 747SP for its Californian home base has not been decided, but we’ll share it with you ASAP so you can plan to be here for it.

We’ve made Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) easier to access. Instead of waiting until you or someone in your household is ill to request a RAT, you can now order and collect RATs any time.

What does this mean for you? You will still be asked if you have symptoms when you make your request, but regardless of whether you tick yes or no, you can still receive your RATs.

To request a RAT online please see https://requestrats.covid19.health.nz/

Big Weather Event on the way

⚠️⚠️Big weather event⚠️⚠️

As stated yesterday theres a big rain event on the way. Expect alot of flooding especially south of Rakaia river.

Rain will be extremely heaving in the high country and with large snow dumps still sitting on the lower slopes of the mountains this will add to the river flows.

Grounds are already saturated. Plan today people. This system works its way in later today.

Strong winds with 120-140kph gusts are likely in exposed places.

Stay safe out there.

Matt

New Zealand will remain at the Orange traffic light setting.

Cases and hospitalisations remain much lower than the peaks experienced earlier in the year. Yesterday the seven-day rolling average of COVID-19 cases was 5,808 and there were 395 people in hospital and 8 in ICU. When we moved out of Red in April the rolling average of cases was nearly 10,000 a day and there were over 500 people in hospital including 28 in ICU.

But with hospitals under pressure from flu and COVID-19 and numbers starting to creep up again a suite of additional measures are being put in place to help reduce spread:
• 50 child-size masks made available to every year 4-7 student in New Zealand.
• 20,000-30,000 masks provided a week to all other students and school staff.
• Extra funding to schools to supports better ventilation over winter months.
• Free flu vaccine made available to all children aged 3-12 years old.
• A second COVID-19 booster for everyone over the age of 50 and other eligible people: https://www.health.govt.nz/covid-19-novel-coronavirus/covid-19-vaccines/covid-19-vaccine-boosters
• Updated reinfection advice. Anyone who experiences symptoms 29 days or longer after previous infection should test and will need to isolate if they test positive: https://covid19.govt.nz/isolation-and-care/after-you-have-had-covid-19/ -and-testing-after-you-have-had-covid-19

Read the full detail in the media release: https://www.beehive.govt.nz/release/new-measures-help-manage-covid-19-country-stays-orange

While reinfections are low at the moment they are likely to increase. The BA.5 variant of Omicron is predicted to become the dominant strain in the coming weeks and is a different variant to what New Zealanders have been infected with to date.

Self-isolation, vaccination and mask-wearing continue to be our main defence against COVID-19. Masks are encouraged whenever you are outside your home. If you haven’t had your booster yet, you can book or find a walk-in centre here: https://bookmyvaccine.covid19.health.nz/

👋🏽 Kia ora Aotearoa! Following a successful nationwide test of Emergency Mobile Alert on Sunday we’d like to thank all those who gave us feedback using our feedback form.

Many of you told us, you were surprised the test alert did not override the silent mode on your phone. For most phones it does. However, we are aware that some phones do not allow for Emergency Mobile Alert to override silent mode. Unfortunately, this is not something we can control and is a decision made by the phone's manufacturer.

You can let us know if you received the test and give feedback here: https://www.research.net/r/alert-feedback.

Find out more about why Emergency Mobile Alerts are an important additional tool to keep you informed in an emergency on our website: https://getready.govt.nz/en/prepared/stay-informed/emergency-mobile-alert/ema-faqs/.

*Please note, the Ministry of Health’s daily reported cases today in Canterbury may differ from those reported at a DHB or local public health unit level. This is because of different reporting cut off times and the assignment of cases between regions, for example when a case is tested outside their usual region of residence.
