Whale stranding prompts rāhui at Ripiro Beach
Taiao: A rāhui has been placed from Glinks Gully to te wahapū o Kaipara following the death of a female parāoa on Ripiro Beach late yesterday afternoon. The whale, estimated at 15 metres long and weighing 20 tonnes, has been named Anahera by Waikaretū Taumata Fiona Richards. The West Coast beach has a history of strandings - in 2021, three s***m whales died and in 2018, two humpbacks were stranded there. The rāhui, instated by Te Uri o Hau Taumata, Te Uri o Hau Environs, and Waikaretū Marae with authorisation from Matua Ben Hita and Colin French, restricts access to the site and prohibits fishing or gathering kaimoana. The measure, to ensure public safety and respect, will remain in place for five days.
