Man has been charged with arson

A 37-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested in relation to a fire in Ōpōtiki this morning.
Sergeant Shane Forsyth of the Ōpōtiki police said the man would appear in the Whakatane District Court on Tuesday on charges of arson.
The arrest followed a report of a break-in at the Coastguard Ōpōtiki building overnight, and a digger being located on fire at the wharf at around 3am.
Coastguard Ōpōtiki president Ron Jones said he was “gutted” that someone has tried set fire to the coastguard building.
“We’re a volunteer organisation that works with saving lives at sea,” he said.
“That someone would try to burn our building down is unbelievable.”
Mr Jones said that while the digger fire was discovered in the middle of the night, the arson attempt at the coastguard building was only discovered at 7am.
“They didn’t realise that thinks were smouldering over here – the alarm did not go off and no one saw the window was broken,” he said.
Luckily, the building itself was unharmed, with only curtains, books and promotional material being charred.
Mr Jones said fotage captured by security cameras installed on the building had aided police in their investigations, which are ongoing.
HEB Construction project manager David Wyeth said the digger destroyed in the arson attack had been worth around $20,000.
He did not expect the attack to set the work back much.
“We’re a bit thin on the ground here today while the fire service and the police do their investigations,” he said.

FIRE INVESTIGATOR Jon Rewi and a HEB Construction staff member inspect the destroyed digger.

Building a Tiriti-led future

Preparations are underway for the Toitū te Tiriti Toitū Toirāwhiti free public seminar to be held at Te Kura o Te Whānau a Apanui next Friday April 26, 5-8pm.
Iwi-led project manager of the Toirāwhiti Locality Jodi Porter said guest speakers include Dayle Takitimu, Natalie Coates, Carlton Irving and Dr Heather Came, alongside Te Kura o Te Whānau a Apanui student Henare Stirling and ex-student Manaia Sorensen.
“We have a stunning line up of internationally recognised Treaty experts and champions of equity in Aotearoa, including two outstanding rangatahi that hope to inspire and activate change in our community,” Ms Porter said.
“Building towards Toi Ora is the vision of the Toirāwhiti Locality.”
Ms Porter said the voices of whānau have reflected poor experiences when they have engaged with different parts of the system, including health, education, justice and social services sectors.
“By focusing on Te Tiriti as our starting point and engaging in ecosystems thinking as a community, we can begin to strategise together on multiple fronts to challenge inequities, and in turn, create systems change that will improve the wellbeing of our whānau, hapū, iwi and wider community,” she said.
For registration and more information see the www.toirawhiti.com website.
“A complimentary return bus service will be departing the Ōpōtiki i-site at 3pm,” Ms Porter said.

FREE SEMINAR: Manaia Sorensen and Henare Stirling are busy preparing their speeches under the guidance of Te Kura o Te Whānau a Apanui principal Teia Herewini.

One dead in Opotiki house fire
OPOTIKI chief fire officer Rowan Newell said the fire brigade was called out to a Bridge Street fire at 2.20am Thursday morning.
The house was well involved on arrival.
“It was reported that two people were inside, but one was accounted for,” he said.
A middle-aged man had been found deceased inside.
The Opotiki Volunteer Fire Brigade had attended the 2.20am callout with two appliances and Ohope with one.
Mr Newell said the fire was not being treated as suspicious, but was still under investigation.
It has taken about half an hour for the firefighters to put out the fire.
The firefighters had also rescued a dog that was found hiding beneath the burning house.
“It had burnt ears,” Mr Newell said.
